Abstract Artist, Eileen Shaloum Is Featured In SOLO Exhibition At Benzaiten Center For Creative Arts Beginning March 23rd

Abstract artist, Eileen Shaloum‘s SOLO Exhibition at the Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts opens Friday, March 23, 2018 through April 5, 2018.  Her latest body of work, “Invisible Cities,” is inspired by the book of the same title by Italo Calvino. Eileen was moved to interpret those descriptions into fantastic landscapes, which she calls  “Dreamscapes.” Get lost in the villages, climb the stairs and ladders to nowhere, and wind your way over the roads that bring you deep into these colorful works of art! In some of these pieces, there are thoughts, reflections, and musings with which the viewer might identify, as well.  The Rickie Report shares some sneak peeks and details here about two receptions on Friday, March 23rd and Saturday, March 24th and opportunities to meet the artist!

“Threads” by Eileen Shaloum

Eileen Shaloum will be exhibiting her hangings, as well as some abstracts on stretched canvas at Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts from March 23, 2018 through April 5, 2018. Her exhibit coincides with the Center’s fundraiser, “The Wearable Art Show,” on Friday, March 23rd  6- 10 pm, which is an event with live music, cocktail reception, wearable art vendors, fashion show, and glassblowing demonstrations. The event raises money for children’s programs and scholarship funding. The cost for that event is $50 per person.   A second, FREE, Open to the Public Reception takes place on Saturday, March 24 from 2 – 5 PM. There will be glassblowing demonstrations and refreshments.

“Reflections” by Eileen Shaloum

Eileen is a painter and mixed media artist who finds the whimsical in her subject matter. Her latest body of work, a group of abstract compositions on un-stretched canvas, is an extension of her “Invisible Cities” series. These hangings, constructed by sewing and gluing canvas pieces together, are then layered with paint and textural components, such as fabric, papers, string, beads, and found objects. By using canvas in a variety of shapes, she is not limited to the confines of a square or rectangular picture plane. The joyful and imaginary quality of her style invites the viewer to interact with the themes of these spirited compositions. Her use of bright colors, mark making and layering paint with textural components, show great spontaneity and freedom.

“Dip in the Pool” by Eileen Shaloum

Eileen tells The Rickie Report, “I am an abstract painter and mixed media artist who enjoys working with a variety of  subjects,  real, surreal or pure abstraction.  I bury images under layers of paint, pastel, charcoal, found objects, cloth, photographs and collaged paper.  I frequently use written passages, which may include poetry, quotes or old letters, in support of my message.  I play with line, shape, texture and color trying to draw the viewer in to interact with the themes in my spirited compositions.  Reflection on life is what inspires me.  I base my themes on the world around me.  Whether it is women’s issues, the everyday trials and tribulations of humanity, or my travels to awe-inspiring and exotic locations, my work is a reflection of things that are important to me”.

“Zaira” by Eileen Shaloum

Eileen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art Education and her Masters in Art History at Hofstra University, Hempstead NY.  To further her knowledge and skills as an artist, she has participated in workshops in the United States and in Italy.  Eileen is an active member of numerous art-related organizations, including: Florida Artists Group (FLAG), National Association of Women Artists, National Association of Women Artists (Florida Chapter), Art League of Long Island, WITVA-Women in the Visual Arts, Boca Museum Artists’ Guild, and the Delray Beach Art League.

“Horse of a Different Color” by Judith Harris

Judith Harris began her passion for painting approximately ten years ago when she studied oil painting with South Florida artist and instructor, John D’Auria, who recognized and encouraged her creative talents. Since then, Judith has become a full-time artist and has created fine art pieces in an array genres and subjects from Florida landscapes to playful ponies and pups and bold beach babes.

“Puppy Love” by Judith Harris

A dedicated artist, she paints most days, enjoys the interaction of studio time with fellow artists, and is active in both the Lake Worth and Delray Art Leagues. Artistic talent is a family-thing as her son, Yale Gurney, is a successful South Florida commercial photographer and her two grandchildren will no doubt be soon playing in the paint. Judith and her husband, Bill, live Lake Worth.

Manny Jomock’s “Breakfast at Cafe Bleu”

Manny graduated from Monmouth College with a degree in art education. After a short tour as a Navy photographer, he taught underprivileged children in social service and recreational programs in New Jersey, Maryland and Maine. As Manny later studied watercolors with Pat Dews and Sally Brandenburg, he developed his artistic style of plein air painting through his involvement with the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast. Manny was influenced by watercolor masters such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, David Curtis and Joseph Zbukvic as well as many artists he studied under. In 2006 he started his career as a professional artist under the name “MannyJArt”.

Manny retired from the USPS in 2008, sold his home in NJ, and with his wife bought an RV to tour the country. Along the way, Manny painted with artists and joined art groups in San Antonio, Maine, Ontario and Delray Beach. After four and a half years of RVing, Manny and his wife settled in Boynton Beach in the winter and Mt. Desert Island and Bar Harbor, Maine in the summer.

Manny says, “The attempt to capture in my paintings how light affects the color, forms, atmosphere and mood found outdoors on site, becomes an alluring challenge to me. Watercolor’s transparency, subtle and gentile effects can produce a creative expression that’s unique and captivating.”

Manny now teaches watercolor for the Palm Beach County Adult Ed Program and is a faculty member of the Delray Art League. He also teaches privately, individuals and small groups for beginning and intermediate watercolor painting. His paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. He exhibits regularly in Florida and Maine. He is a member of Florida Watercolor Society, Plein Air Palm Beach, Delray Art League, Watercolor Society of America, International Plein Air Painters and several other art societies.

“Meow-Jong” by Karen “Zuk” Rosenblatt

Karen tells The Rickie Report, “Until about 10 years ago I was painting mostly landscapes and animals. Although I enjoyed the subject matter I needed a niche that would set my work apart. I asked myself what is it that I love to paint and never tire of. The answer was “cats”. I find them truly mesmerizing, magical creatures. I never have far to look for inspiration. Ideas come to me as I watch my own cats and just let my imagination loose as I am continually charmed by them”.

Karen “Zuk”Rosenblatt, “Siam I Am”

Karen Rosenblatt, a former pianist and teacher, transitioned to art after a strained finger forced her from the concert stage. “I can say that the creative spark finds a way to go on… Just let it burn”. Her father, a commercial artist/illustrator, passed on and left her his supplies. She took his signature (“Zuk”) a shortened version of the family name (“Zukoff”) and began her journey.

Karen “Zuk” Rosenblatt “Mirror Mirror On The Wall”

Although most of her work is realistic she enjoys adding a bit of humor (realism with a twist). Animals (especially cats) are her favorite subject, and her hope is that people who see her work will be inspired to treat them all with kindness and dignity.  “I soon realized that my love for cats was the constant evolving inspiration for most of my work. I particularly enjoy sharing their beauty, mystery and whimsical nature”.

Karen “Zuk” Rosenblatt  “Kinship”

In her meticulously constructed paintings, Karen presents the viewer with the zany and mischievous world of cats. While her playful perspectives are amusingly distorted, the narratives created are refreshingly familiar. Her painting demonstrates the artist’s true ability to capture exciting concepts. It strays from an adherence to the pseudo-reality of photographic work and dashes into the realm of the artist’s imagination”.

About Young Artists Sister City Contest:

Each year, the Young Artists and Authors Showcase encourages youth from around the globe to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork and literature. All students must submit their work based on a designated theme that is announced each year. Artwork is sent from member cities to Washington, D.C. where a panel of judges selects the winners based on originality, composition, and theme interpretation.

This program is a great opportunity to reach out into the community and engage local English and art teachers, and reach a student audience that may not already be included in sister city programming. After the finalists for art and literature have been announced, they embark on a year-long tour hosted by local sister city programs on a monthly basis. This opportunity is available to any city and can help expand local youth programming.

This year’s theme, “Peace through People,” will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Sister Cities International by celebrating 60 years of global citizen action and impact while looking ahead toward a better future where the world’s citizens can come together and find common ground, prosperity, and peace.
