“Israel Visual” Exhibit Showcases 2D And 3D Art By Israeli Artists Living In South Florida

The Mandel JCC shares a special exhibit to celebrate “IsraelDays: A Festival of Arts & Culture”. The public is invited to the Free Opening reception on Tuesday, April 25th of  ” Israel Visual: Israeli Artists Living in South Florida”, curated by Rolando Chang Barrero and Ilene Adams. The Exhibit continues until May 5th.  The Festival celebrates Israel’s past, present and future through an artistic viewpoint including an international photography exhibit, engaging author discussions, film screenings and an inspiring art exhibit that features the work of local Israeli artists. The Fourth Annual Festival runs through Tuesday, May 16, with events featured at various locations throughout Palm Beach County.  The Rickie Report shares the details of this art exhibit and some sneak peeks.

Art Synergy, (www.artsynergy.org) in partnership with the Jewish Federation, has curated a special exhibition featuring Israeli artists living in south Florida. The exhibit “Israel Visual, showcases four talented and diverse artists, working in varied media, from fiber art to digitally enhanced paintings.  Ilene Gruber Adams and Rolando Chang Barrero were contacted to help put together the exhibit that that will be on display at the Bente & Daniel S. Lyons Art Gallery at the Mandel JCC – Palm Beach Gardens, beginning Monday, April 24, through Friday, May 5.

 

 

Guests will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a culturally enriching exhibition featuring works created by four local Israeli artists. The opening reception is Tuesday, April 25, at 6:00 pm and is open to the public.  The artist all have a connection to Israel, and many are grown children of Holocaust survivors. The artists are Leora Stewart Klaymer, Judy “Yudit” Eisingber, Linda Behar in collaboration with Raheleh T. Filsoofi and the late Dina Knapp.

 

 

LEORA STEWART KLAYMER

 

“Virgin Bride” by Leora Stewart Klaymer

 

Leora, born in Jerusalem, has taught in Philadelphia, New York and right here in South Florida.  She is a fiber artist and her work has been shown extensively world-wide.” My Fiber constructions are based on my observations of Nature and are a metaphor for the cycles of growth in life and in the natural world – landscapes, seascapes, cell structures, organic forms built with different fibers, along with beads, feathers, coral shards using a variety of textile techniques to create these three dimensional abstracted, structures” Leora explains.

 

JUDY  EISINGER

“Popsicle Flowers” by Judy Eisinger

 

Judy Eisinger, a graphic designer and painter exhibiting colorful paintings created using both tradition painting methods and digital art. Born in Budapest, Hungary, and escaping that communist country in 1956, Judy moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she began painting at an early age and, at 13, took first place for the design of the City Holiday Card. Judy studied fine art at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cooper School of Art, which led to a four-year scholarship to Kent State University. After graduating with honors, Judy began her painting career by showing her colorful paintings at the Shaker Heights Artist’s Cooperative Gallery. Her work soon became sought after and now hangs in private collections throughout the United States, Europe and Israel.  She and her family moved to Israel where Judy designed greeting cards for LION Printing in Tel Aviv.  She has illustrated a children’s book, taught graphic design as an Adjunct Professor at Palm Beach Community College and is the owner and creative lead of Yudit Design (yudit.com)

 

 

LINDA  BEHAR

“Peace Labyrinth” by Linda Behar and Raheleh T. Filsoofi

 

Linda Behar’s current work explores a new approach to feminist concepts that are being explored by many artists: the idea of separating personal identity from the body, and digitally objectifying the female figure. Her work combines laser cutting with traditional printmaking techniques, specifically woodblock printing. Her work here, “Peace Labyrinth”, endeavors to promote peace and tolerance through the discovery of what we hold in common. The artists, Linda Behar, who is of Jewish heritage and Raheleh T. Filsoofi, who is of Iranian heritage, intend to bring diverse communities together in conversation and to send a message of tolerance and acceptance throughout the world.

 

DINAH KNAPP

Dina Knapp, is known for making wearable art an art form. Her history and memory series compress history and culture through a layering of objects and images incorporating nostalgic postcards, painting, crochet, vintage fabrics, found objects and tourist souvenirs.  Born in Cyprus and raised in Israel and New York City by Holocaust survivors, Dina died this past October, at 69, of cancer.

The South Florida Basket and Fiber Guild announces their 4th Annual 2 Day Sampler workshop on January 14th & 15th with Crystal Cawley.  Participants will explore Paper, Fiber, Print  and Stitch in this exciting event!  Think of this workshop as a sampler — a place and time to explore the possibilities of combining paper with textiles to create unique tactile work. Think of hybrids and cross-pollination — how can materials and methods be combined and adapted to become more than the sum of their parts? Activities and demonstrations will include laminating paper and fabric together, printing images onto fabric and paper, machine and hand stitching, spinning paper thread, methods of transferring images and text onto fabric and paper, and more as time and interest allow. Participants will have time to investigate demonstrated techniques and materials on their own, to make personal discoveries and connections for their own work.

Crystal Cawley is a skillful and established artist who lives and works in Portland, Maine. Crystal has a voice that she annunciates clearly through her work. Her approach pushes the boundaries while speaking truth from her heart and life experience.

Call to Artists:

The South Florida Basket and Fiber Guild invites artists 18 years of age or older who reside in Florida (full and part-time) to submit up to three pieces of recent work for a juried exhibition showcasing original artwork that represents contemporary approaches to fiber art and that pushes the boundaries and/or traditions in media and execution. Emerging, mid-career, and established artists are encouraged to apply.

 

DEADLINE:  November 1, 2016

Work completed after January 1, 2014, will be accepted in these categories :

 

 

 

  • Wall Works: Two-dimensional works that are intended for wall display
  • Sculptural Works: Three-dimensional works that may be free-standing or suspended
  • Vessel Forms/Basketry: Functional work and sculptural expressions of the vessel form
  • Wearables: Body adornments, including wearable art clothing, accessories and jewelry.

 

All work must be primarily natural or synthetic fiber in content or executed using traditional fiber techniques and be original in concept, design and execution.

 

 
The non-refundable entry fee is $40 for up to 3 works

 

Jurors for the exhibition are:

Jon Eric Riis, noted contemporary tapestry artist whose work has been shown in more than 50 exhibitions around the world and is found in numerous prestigious museum collections.
Lois Russell, nationally recognized basket maker, instructor and past president of the National Basketry Organization. Her award-winning work is in private and museum collections and has been featured in books and magazines..
Benjia Morgenstern, sculptural basket maker who uses natural materials to create non-traditional vessels. Her work has been shown in juried exhibitions and galleries throughout the country and featured in basketry books.

 

 

 

Cash prizes will be awarded: Best in show: $500; Best in Category: $250

 

 

The awards judge is Keidra Daniels Navaroli, Assistant Director and Curator for the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at Florida Institute Of Technology.

Cornell Art Museum Goes “Wild” With New Exhibition Opening January 14th

Old School Square announces a powerful, new exhibit at the Cornell Art Museum. “Wild” is a group show of contemporary artwork by 12 internationally recognized artists who are inspired by nature and use their talents to show the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Artists were invited because of their respect for nature, their fascination with animals and their attention to the beauty of this natural world. Artwork featured in this exhibition has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. The Rickie Report shares the details and some images here and urges you to see this exhibit! “Wild” also features paintings by more than 20 Plein Air Palm Beach artists, who are inspired by and have captured the beauty of South Florida’s lush landscapes.  Make note of Special Events taking place in conjunction with “Wild”. Diane Arrieta works as the art/science outreach coordinator at Jupiter library at Florida Atlantic University. Her latest body of work deals with the relationships humans have with the environment. Often much of her work deals with social issues relating to women and children.

 

 

 

Alex Beard

New Orleans-based Alex Beard is a painter and illustrator, adventurer, best-selling author, world traveler, animal conservationist and now filmmaker. He has emerged as one of his generations most creative, prolific and accomplished artists.

 

 

Ellen Jewett

Ellen was born in Markham Ontario. She took to shaping three dimensional forms naturally at a young age.  In 2007 Ellen completed her post-secondary honors degree in Anthropology and Fine Art at McMaster University.  By the time she presented her thesis, Ellen’s academic and artistic interests in the biological where intrinsically interwoven. Her sculptures are being featured in public and private collections worldwide.

From the Artist Statement: “…Beauty is subjective, and perfection in nature is frequently surprising. My work isn’t beautiful in a traditional sense. It has its own unique beauty, which may seem dark, but it isn’t without humor. My connection to nature, the earth, the beauty and grimness of the world are some of the topics of my studio conversations. In nature, there is no sentimentality about life and death; life is temporal and fragile. Ernesto Kunde

Miami has long been a complex, tangled landscape which continues to intrigue and beguile over four generations of visual artists. For Brazilian-born Ernesto Kunde, transforming the mangroves, wild birds, and crackled Deco architecture into a physically viable format is a simple process. He displays a keen eye for interpreting his tropical surroundings maintaining a colloquial tone: the vital elements of Miami as a natural and urban biosphere are omnipresent for Kunde, appearing on cuts of canvas, found wood and corrugated aluminum. He infuses his work with a Pop Art sensibility, choosing highly saturated, contrasting tones with completely opaque shadow.

From the Artist Statement: “The act of stiffening intricately crocheted cotton string with glue produces material that is structurally similar to delicate bone tissue. The string utilized in this process can be viewed as the basic cellular unit of fabrication, and by implementing media and practices inherited from my relatives, both living and deceased, I aim to generate emblems of my diminishing bloodline, embodied by each organism’s skeletal remains. The material out of which my work is composed acts as an alchemical conduit between the garment and the clothesline; it acknowledges the latter as a symbol of the ancestry and familiar bonds which have greatly informed my work…”

Jonathan is a conceptual artist from the Bronx whose expertise includes sculpture, painting, installation, photography, and video installation.  His work makes social statements all the while sparkling with hand-placed Swarovski Crystals.  His influences include Andy Warhol, Judith Leiber, and John Waters, and he says of himself, “I am a lover of all things campy and kitsch.”

My work celebrates the questioning of objects and the rediscovering of moments in the past. Brooklyn based Scott Sturgill is best known for his painting, paint chip mosaics, and floral sculptures. From the Artist Statement: “Inspired by the bedroom communities of the Midwest, my work examines the conflict between our need to push our individual sexual boundaries and our desire to appear as ambassadors of a white-picket-fence America… My paintings, sculptures and mosaics use the vernacular of the American heartland to scratch the surface of suburban pretense, exploring the compulsion to veil ourselves behind the facade of a commoditized version of the American Dream.”

 

 

 

Carin Wagner

Carin Wagner is an award-winning South Florida artist, born in Norfolk, Virginia. Wagner works predominately in oil on canvas, with a message of environmental protection at its core. She has exhibited throughout the U.S., including shows at the Sherry French Gallery, the Silvia Wald, Po Kim Gallery in New York, the Lawrence Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Cultural Council of Palm Beach, and the Lighthouse ArtCenter. Museum shows include the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Coral Springs Museum of Art, and the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

Old School Square is the center of arts & entertainment in downtown Delray Beach. Celebrating 25 years as the community’s gathering place, the historic campus includes the intimate Crest Theatre (in the restored 1925 Delray High School building) the Cornell Art Museum (in the 1913 Delray Elementary building), and the Fieldhouse (formerly known as the Vintage Gymnasium, c. 1925). The Pavilion, which opened in 2002, hosts outdoor concerts and festivals. The Creative Arts School (located on the second floor of the Crest Theatre) offers art, photography, writing and performance classes. Outside The Box2 Welcomes Innovative Art from 37 Artists

“Outside the Box2” is the second biennial exhibition of outdoor, site-specific art in Palm Beach County, FL. This unique and alternative format, situated at the uniquely prestigious Whitespace-The Mordes Collection, features innovative contemporary artists that will interact with the unique landscape & outdoor environment. This year’s exhibit has grown in scope with nearly double the amount of installations, and including artists from throughout Florida, from Gainesville to Tampa to Miami. The exhibit involved extensive preparation on the part of the curator and artists.   Lisa Rockford, the curator, said she gave preference to installations that were “imaginative, include interactive and/or multi- sensory elements, have high aesthetic appeal, and incorporate nature, or adapt well to the site.”

Attendees will walk through a maze of color, images & sounds. Visitors can use the map to ensure that they find all 37 installations. The artworks range from hand-sculpted ceramics, found object assemblage, video art, performances, and interactive installations.

 

 

 

After paying admission, visitors will immediately walk through the first artwork, a spidery mixed media arch hand- crocheted by artist Kristina Thalin. Viewers will next feel they are seeing spots, in a site-specific installation by Sylvia Riquezes, who utilized the surrounding natural elements to inspire and create her own versions of “Seeds” in the palm trees, and flora & fauna for the bushes, entitled “Bodhisattvas Emerging from the Earth” .

Visitors will walk through Matthew Falvey’s 20 foot long tunnel of televisions, which have sensors that change imagery and sound according to people’s movements. Then they will be confronted by the monstrous scale of Andrew Nigon’s artwork, “Oh! Oh God!” which is a colorful 12 foot elephant, made of found objects & insulation foam. The sculpture is in a continual evolution, its gestural positioning and surfaces textures changing each time it is shown, based on the artists’ changing worldview.

According to the artist, the elephant is an “endlessly comforting god that absorbs my uncertainties, instead of offering critical judgments.” 

 

 

 

Onlookers will be also be immediately drawn to Carmen Tiffany’s whimsical video animation, which she calls a “liquid painting”. It will be projected billboard size on the front wall, easily seen from the road.

 As viewers walk around the building, there are more intimately scaled, or quieter works that only the most observant visitors will find, like the “miniature dreamscapes” of Christine Fogel, or the installation by Martin Casuso, which is unassumingly hidden under the portico.

Other captivating artworks will force attendees to stop and look as they make their way along the tarmac toward the waterfront installations. Judy Polstra’s femme fatale sculptures are always crowd-pleasers, probably due to the sheer number of parts assembled together to make up each figure. Judy had never before thought of exhibiting her work outdoors, and had to be courted by the curator to submit a proposal. You can examine her sculptures for hours and still find something new, from teeth, to jewelry, to buttons, and toy parts.

Many will surely want to pause for a “photo op” at the installation by Pilar Batlle. Pilar is part of the new trend of “Yarn Bombing” street art, only instead of yarn, she uses “Plarn” (plastic yarn).  Her pseudonym on the street is “The Trashy Spider.” As an environmental statement, Pilar cuts ups post consumer waste (plastic bags) to crochet doily- like decorative designs and cover objects like trees, fire hydrants, and parking meters. The durability of the plastic makes them an ideal material for outdoor use.

As part of the proposal process, artists were also encouraged to incorporate a light source into their design. One prime example of self-lit work is a dynamic piece by Mark Joseph Oliver, who just relocated to Florida last year to be an art professor at Florida Atlantic University. When Lisa Rockford asked Mark to submit a proposal, he immediately wanted to re-appropriate his sculpture “Telecommunication,” which consists of acrylic rods protruding from a working TV set. The clear rods dramatically emphasize the colorful light of the images on TV, and transform it into an ethereal work that seduces the viewer like a moth to a flame.

Mark’s idea was to transmute the sculpture into a meteorite that has humorously just landed on a couch, that he explains is a portrayal of the way television has affected domestic life. For this event, the TV will play movies that shaped his childhood and worldview.

As visitors weave their way along the asphalt through more sculptural interventions and projections, they will pass through a gate into the second stage of installations on the backside of the property, along the waterfront. This area will include three different live performances, ongoing throughout each night.

 

 

Mumbi O’Brien and Kaleb Durocher collaborated on a performance with precisely linked digital components. For the performative component, there will be a head-dressed character that embodies the essence of the moon. The front of their garment is a cream color and the back is black to represent the dark side of the moon. The headdress will also be circular to emphasize the cyclical nature of the moon, constructed of repurposed materials, synthetic hair, wooden reeds, and fabric. The performer will be completely covered from head to toe with their face obscured and hands painted so the emphasis is not on their identity but rather that which they are embodying. The digital component of the piece is a projection facing down towards the earth.

The projector will be controlled from a laptop so that when moon character enters this particular location, an active projection will begin to encircle them, morphing and rotating with imagery of the various stages of the moon. After some time the projected circle will open up and turn off and the moon character will react by moving slowly and elegantly away from the space, either to look out over the water (as the moon controls the tides) or disappear. In some very special cases, a guest may wander upon the exact projection site, and the projection will envelope them as well, allowing them to be a part of this ritual. However, the minute they step away or someone else interferes, the projection will stop.

Further down the grass, Joseph Herring will stage a performative installation entitled “Broward County Botanical Melodramatic: A Conversation between the Saw Palmetto and the Spanish Bayonet on the Pros and Cons of Obligate Pollination Mutualism vs. Indiscriminate Polyamorous Pollination involving the poetics of interaction between costumed plants and insects.”   Joseph Herring is a professor at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, and has staged elaborate performance installations and interventions at a range of prestigious venues, including High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree, founded by Andrea Zittel, Light Assembly, for Art Basel Miami Beach, Verge Art Miami Beach, Zeitgeist Multi- Disciplinary Arts Center, the Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum, and the Christine Koenig Galerie, Vienna.

For this performance, Joseph elucidates that: “Two plants, the Saw Palmetto and the Spanish Bayonet, sit atop giant tripods and communicate back and forth using plant telepathy. Root systems hang down from both plants. The plants will interact with the insects on the ground, the Honey Bee and the Yucca Moth, through their root systems, both physically and telepathically. Physically in that the roots will move through the actions of a puppeteer, telepathically in that the puppeteer will play kit-bashed and circuit bent electronic game-instruments with the attached hanging roots.

The insects will react to the sounds and respond with electronic sounds of their own, fed to radios around their necks from computers underneath the tripods. The games bent for sound will include Operation, Simon, and various Nintendo DS Lite games with interesting audio. Audio will also include the plants conversing through megaphones, and the conversation will sound like a mix of DADA poetry and the Children’s Television Workshop’s The Electric Company. The piece will refer not only to the installation and performance’s relationship to the physical environment, but also to the specific geographical location. The Saw Palmetto and The Spanish Bayonet are two plants indigenous to the area. The Saw Palmetto has played an important part in the life of Floridians since before the Spanish invasion, and this history will be explored aurally during the performance.”

As visitors continue exploring the waterfront, and look out into the water, they will notice a otherworldly, large glowing white island in the shape of a baby, by Kevin Curry. The floating sculpture was elaborately planned through computer programming and will be created in a mosaic of geometric parts using a CNC router.  The piece is titled “Lost and Found” and “addresses the innocence and potential of beginnings, as well as the sadness and regret of hindsight.”

An installation that only the most perceptive viewers will find on the waterfront are the organic sculptures of Amalia Mermingas . Amalia was inspired by the way Andy Goldsworthy works endlessly on an earthwork sculpture only to watch it fall apart. As result, her artworks are intentionally ephemeral, made with unfired ceramics, and placed at the water’s edge, so that they dissolve and change shape over the course of the night from the erosion of the water’s tides. Amalia states that she is releasing her sculptures like a performance. The viewer can watch the clay sculptures become reclaimed by nature.

 

 

The final elaborate performance is on the opposite end of the beach, called “Kicking Comets,” by Craig Smith’s entourage, will be the most boisterous. Craig Smith is an internationally recognized artist and teaches at the University of Florida. He has been featured at a range of venues including the PS1MOMA Contemporary Art Institute, The Tate Modern, CEPA Gallery, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The George Eastman House, ARTSPACE Sydney, SCM Hong Kong, and galleries including Galerie Schuster Photo (Berlin), RARE Art (New York), Big Orbit (Buffalo), The Kent Gallery, and White Columns (New York). He has also published two books: On the Subject of the Photographic (2008: University of the Arts London) and Training Manual for Relational Art (2009: Big Orbit Gallery).

Craig’s oeuvre consistently focuses “The Art of Sport,” and this performance will likewise be highly athletic, consisting of endless, repetitive place-kicking by the artist of footballs from the shoreline toward a boat with three other performers waiting in the water. The performers in the water will have search lights on their heads and hand-held fishing nets, zigzagging the boat, attempting to catch or capture the balls. A vintage Porsche 911 will be placed on the beach to illuminate the artist and boat with its headlights. The footballs will have reflective tape so that they look like comets sailing through the air.

 

 

There are more notable installations and site-specific interventions than can be mentioned. The Outside the Box2 Biennial is sure to become one of the most significant and indispensable celebrations of visual art in South Florida, and will clearly be a spectacle of visual delights for all who attend.

ABOUT THE CURATOR:

 

Lisa Rockford, received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lisa is an Assistant Professor at Broward College, a resident artist at Sailboat Bend artist Lofts, and founding member 1310 Gallery. Lisa began curating Contemporary art exhibitions in her position as Art Services Director of the Dittmar Gallery at Northwestern University in 2000, and has curated and juried numerous group exhibitions in Broward County, collaborating with prominent art professionals as guest judges. Guest judges have included Jose E. Lopez, Director & Publisher of Art Districts Magazine, Janet Batet, Curator & Art Critic, Francie Bishop Good, Artist and Art Collector, Owner of Girls Club Art Collection, Guerra De la Paz, International Artists, Rochi Llaneza, Executive Director of Hardcore Art Contemporary Space, Dan & Kathryn Mikesell, Art Collectors, Founders of Fountainhead Art Residency, Klaudio Rodriguez, Assistant Curator at The Frost Art Museum, Carol Jazzar, Owner and Director of Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art, and more. About Whitespace:

 

Whitespace is the private contemporary art exhibition space and loft-style home of Elayne and Marvin Mordes located in West Palm Beach.  The Mordes’ have been collecting Contemporary Art for over 30 years and have a unique European approach to their collection.  One of the strengths of the collection is the consistency of vision that it exhibits and, in addition, has also been characterized by its enthusiasm and focus.  Whitespace has approximately 8000 square feet of exhibition space which has partial permanent programming and a changing project space entitled “Whitebox”, which has curated exhibitions which meet a high level of competency, vision and creativity.  This is the only venue of this type in this area. We consider it an honor to establish a growing audience of Contemporary Art “Lovers”!! 

The mission of Whitespace is to expand and introduce the viewer to current trends in contemporary art by creating international exhibitions by major mid-career contemporary artists using various mediums: including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and video. GENERAL ARTWORK SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All artwork must arrive at our offices on or before the published deadlines.  We prefer submissions of original art.  If original art is not available, our next preference is hi-res digital images (300 dpi at 8½” x 10″).  If hi-res digital images are not available, we will very rarely consider professional-quality transparencies or color slides.  Color-copy submissions are not accepted.

All artwork must be identified with the artist’s name, address, e-mail and phone number clearly printed on a label attached to each sample.  As artwork often gets separated from instructions during our selection process, we ask that you also inscribe your name and address somewhere on each piece of art.  If you desire acknowledgment of artwork receipt, please include a self-addressed stamped postcard.

For  collaborative projects, it is the responsibility of the submitting artist to obtain permission from each participant prior to submission.  In addition, each  piece of the collaborative must be labeled with contact information of the artist who created it.  Please be aware that the collaborative project in its entirety will only be returned to the submitting artist and must have sufficient return postage.

If the artwork is three-dimensional, please attach your identification with a removable string, or pack the sample in a plastic bag with your identification. Artwork without proper identification will not be considered

We can not offer delivery confirmation; however, we are happy to put insurance on the submission. Belle Armoire

Inspired Artisan Designers of art-to-wear garments and accessories can find inspiration from almost anywhere. For Susanna Gordon, in our March/April 2008 issue of Belle Armoire, it was the floor-to-ceiling chalkboard menu from French cafés that inspired her handbag design. We challenge you to keep your eyes open to observe things on the ground, in the air, in and around buildings… or any other place you find yourself, to get inspired for your next art-to-wear design.  For your creation to be considered for publication for future installments of The Inspired Artisan, please send a hi-resolution digital image (300 dpi at 8″ x 10″) of the inspiration (either e-mailed to the Editor-in-Chief at beleditor@bellearmoire.com or burned on a CD) along with your actual art-to-wear creation to Belle Armoire by following the Submission Guidelines.  Student Runway Belle Armoire seeks original, handmade artwear by students and working apprentices to present as part of the Student Runway Department. To be considered for publication, please see top of page for details on mailing artwork and ensuring its return. Artwear may include garments, jewelry and accessories, and projects and techniques may encompass sewing; knitting and crochet; mixed-media adornment of clothing, jewelry and accessories; surface embellishment; beading; wirework; glass; and polymer and art metal clay. Submissions should include information on apparel, textiles, jewelry or other classes taken, as well as contact information for an instructor or professor overseeing your studies. On the Surface           You can’t go wrong with playing with surface treatments on a piece of fabric or favorite garment. From dyeing to painting to burning and so much more, surface treatments are an easy way to personalize an artistic garment. Whether you’re a pro at a surface treatment, or have never tried before, we’d like to see what you can do on the surface. Play with one treatment or several, show it off with a jacket, dress, or scarf — however you decide  to do it, we can’t wait to see what you can do with surface treatments! Deadline: Ongoing.

Mingle

Unique gatherings take center stage with our newest publication, Mingle! From unique theme ideas to unexpected exchanges to artistic retreats and adventures, Mingle will provide the alluring tales and extraordinary techniques of hosting exceptional gatherings with an artistic flair. For this new publication, we are looking for photos and stories from unique gatherings, inventive invitations, party planning tips, table setting designs, and any other details from get-togethers with friends and fellow artists — both large and small! Submissions can be emailed to the editor at mingle@stampington.com, or saved on a disc and sent to our physical mailing address. If selected, we will need hi-res versions of your photographs. Deadline for artwork to be received: Semiannually every May 15th and November 15th.

Somerset Studio

     It’s nearly impossible to hear Edgar Allan Poe’s name without thoughts  of ravens and ghosts coming to mind. From “The Tell-Tale Heart” to “The  Fall of the House of Usher” to “The Raven” we’re all familiar with his  bone-chilling work.
For our next Halloween issue of Somerset Studio, we thought that Edgar  Allan Poe’s great work would be the perfect inspiration. It’s time to  brush the dust off his books and find a story to inspire your  Halloween-themed inspirations. His work is also readily available  online. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! A Somerset Summer To me, there is no season more inspirational than summer. Nights spent outdoors, fireflies flickering in the sky, running barefoot through the grass – there’s nothing better. For the July/August 2012 issue, we’re asking for you to look past the sometimes oppressive summer heat to the beauty found only in summertime. Are you moved by the cool blues of the ocean, or do you love the look of your July garden? Whatever it is – journals, assemblages, altered books – we want to see artwork inspired by summer.  Deadline for artwork to be received: February 15, 2012.

Stamper's Sampler

Put a Cork on It! Corkboard has so many crafting possibilities and creative uses. We challenge you to come up with a unique and interesting way to incorporate corkboard with stamping. Purchase thin sheets and die-cut it, cut out cute shapes, add a corkboard border to a card like Amanda B. Jones in the card pictured below, stamp onto it, use it as a panel, paint it, tear it, shred it and sprinkle it, or find another original way to add it as an embellishment. We can’t wait to see what you come with it for the July/August/September issue! Absolute Deadline — January 15, 2012

Skipping Stone Gray  Last year, we wanted to see the brightest and boldest stamped artwork you could create with sunshine yellow, and we received such an amazing assortment of cards and projects. Our annual color challenge is back, and time around, we want to tone it down a tad with the refreshing shade of skipping stone gray. Due to a printing error, the color shown in the December/January Issue doesn’t match the title. But, as it turns out, we do like the color. Moving forward, incorporate the shade of blue shown or a pale (skipping stone) gray into your cards for this challenge. The choice is up to you. Absolute Deadline is January 15, 2012

Themeless Artwork   As part of our shift to quarterly and the new and larger size of The Stampers’ Sampler, we would love to make our Feeling Themeless a recurring department! A Call for Articles   We are always looking for new and innovative stamping articles. If you’re interested in submitting an idea for an upcoming issue of The Stampers’ Sampler, we would love to see it. Just send us 5–10 cards that demonstrate the same theme, a new stamping technique, a unique usage of an unexpected or interesting material, or an exciting project. Art Doll

Shelf Sitter Challenge    We love Amy Fowler-Farrell’s darling felted Knee Hugger dolls that are in our Winter issue. These cute little dolls with bendable knees are often called shelf sitters. They perch on mantles, shelves, a stack of books or wherever they can find a place to land. Shelf sitters can be created out of felt, cloth,  clay, wood, and more. Paper Personas  Inspired by Judith Thibaut’s doll “George in Drag” (Spring 2010) and in the spirit of Lynne Perrella’s book Beyond Paper Dolls, we’ve created a new department in Art Doll Quarterly that will feature one fabulous, artistic and beautifully executed paper doll in each issue. We’re looking for expressive paper personas crafted with innovative techniques and art mediums — over-the-top imaginative interpretations of the human form.
