Vacationing with Your Jewelry

John Bella has been designing and selling jewelry in downtown Stuart for a long time. His expertise is always appreciated. For jewelry lovers who collect and change out large holed beads on necklaces or bracelets, John offers specialty beads with a wide variety of Florida themes.  The Rickie Report shares some of his vacation tips for travel with your jewelry.

  • Many experts recommend leaving expensive jewelry in a secure place at home while on vacation, such as a safe deposit box.

  • However, if this isn’t an option, both Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co. and Jewelers Unblocked have offered tips that would be helpful for travelers.

  • Keep jewelry on when going through security at the airport. Taking it off and setting it aside to get scanned gives strangers the chance to steal it.

  • Use the two-key control safety deposit box or a secured vault if either are available at your hotel. It’s more secure than using the safe in the room, which should be used only for semi-valuable belongings. However, if that’s the only option, it’s better than leaving the jewelry out in the open.

  • Be selective about who is being let into the hotel room. Use the privacy sign if no hotel staff should be let in when the room is vacant.

  •  Use discretion when bringing any jewelry outside of the hotel room. Don’t wear items that will attract attention or “advertise” the valuables; keep rings turned inward and pendants or necklaces tucked under clothing.

  •  Remove jewelry–and keep it safely locked away–before getting into chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or the ocean, as chlorine and saltwater can damage precious metals and some gemstones.

  •  If jewelry has to be worn while swimming, check it often. Cool water makes it easy for jewelry to slide off as fingers constrict.

  • Check the insurance coverage on the jewelry to ensure that the pieces are adequately covered, whether they are left behind at home or taken on the trip.

  •  Be aware of surroundings and look alert and confident. Thieves target those who appear oblivious, distracted or timid.

Jewelry Trends to Consider

Look at any fashion magazine: You will see jewelry and accessories to go with the new season’s clothing.  What to create for the fashion-conscious art patron?  The Rickie Report shares some insight into Jewelry Trends.

 Jewelry Trends

From large, massive pieces of jewelry to a simple pair of stud earrings, it is clear that jewelry as an accessory is here to stay.  For artists who create jewelry pieces, it is important to understand the latest trends but at the same time, stay true to your own artistic self!   Thankfully, we live in an era where variety is not only accepted but embraced.

METALS

  • Gold has always been the standard, but metals ( think silver, steel, bronze) are hot.  For those working with non-metallic mediums, think of these in terms of a color palette.

  • Metal tubes ( check out your local hardware store or plumbing supplier)

  • Chains!  Even better: Multiple chains!

  • Watch parts and keys are still big influences

  • Wire – wrapped gemstones, cabachons, shells

  • Bent wire.  So you’re not into wire-wrapping.  A simple twist of metal is sometimes just enough to enhance a bracelet.
  • Stacked rings ( make them interchangeable, so your clients come back for more)

Organic

  • Be Colorful!

  • Consider different fibers  and various textures (check out a local knitting shop)

  • Embroidery floss

  • Love a piece of fabric?  Make a wide bracelet!   (Addition of rhinestones or other bling is optional)

  • Bohemian styles

  • Native American styles

  • Woven with chevrons or intricate patterns

  • Stop during your walk at the beach and look for shells with natural holes

  • Up-cycle scrabble tiles, papers, photos, bottle caps

Leather, Wood, Etc.

  • Think male!

  • Think female!

  • Wide cuff bracelets with or without metal accents

  • Wood beads on leather

  • Wood beads with chain

  • Wood beads with rubber “O” rings ( get thee to your hardware store!)

  • A small portion of a driftwood branch can be wire-wrapped and hang as a simple pendant

Things to consider:

BODY JEWELRY

  • Think ABOVE the elbow for bracelets

  • Consider the FULL FOOT instead of just the toe rings

  • Arm cuffs

  • Bib necklaces

  • Ankle chains with charms

  • Long necklaces that can be worn in front OR in back ( to highlight some of the back-baring fashions)

  • Pearls NEVER go out of fashion!

There is no “right” or “wrong” with jewelry design.  We point out that as concern for easing neck pain and back pain increases, lighter – weight neck pieces are going to become “hot”.  Your patrons may have metal allergies, so be prepared to offer different earring wires.  AND don’t forget those who may not have pierced ears.  It is easy to convert pierced earrings into clips.
