The Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest is long overdue! Organized by St. Lucie Cultural Alliance in partnership with MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Event Center, “Art and mindfulness warm our hearts and lift our spirits as we journey through life,” says Executive Director Alyona Ushe. “Combining the mind-opening benefits of art with the healing benefits of mindfulness is a perfect marriage”.

 

The Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest is designed to enhance the cultural community while the fundraiser will further empower the organization to showcase local and regional talent.  We encourage artists from all over the state and beyond to be part of this festival”, Alyona adds.

 

This is the Alliance’s major fundraising event for the year to raise funds for the nonprofit organization artists grants program. This fest will also promote the arts, local artists, and provide value, fun, and entertainment for the whole family.

 

There will be painters, potters, photographers and sculptors; artists who create works from recycled components as well as fashion designers. Live music, dance productions and spoken word performance pieces will take place on stage. A children’s corner featuring family activities and crafts will provide the opportunity to create hands-on art. Multiple food trucks will tempt visitors with aromatic healthy food choices.

Visitors will find all-natural soaps, hand-made crystal jewelry and sound healing instruments. Take the opportunity to have a Tarot card reading or a chakra analysis.

While most art lovers are mindful, and in turn, many mindfulness practitioners surround themselves with beautiful art, the Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest will inspire everyone to “jump over the fence” to find new ways of enjoying every day. “The arts and mindfulness offer a natural partnership between two powerful disciplines,” says Alyona. Linda McCarthy, Director of MIDFLORIDA Event Center agrees. “Arts and cultural activities inspire civic pride, connect generations, bridge diverse groups, and serve as a symbol of Port St. Lucie,” says McCarthy.

 

All funds received from sponsorships and vendor fees will go into the Cultural Alliance’s Grant Fund to be awarded to artists and cultural organizations, as will monies raised from the sale of auction items and raffles. According to Alyona, the Grant Fund already has accumulated $25,000: $10,000 from the city of Port St. Lucie which helped launch the program and $15,000 from St.Lucie County and from the Florida Arts License Plate program. All grant awards will be awarded only to local entities “so we can continue growing the local cultural landscape,” says Alyona.

 

Deena Rahill, a Certified Sound Healing Practitioner is the organizer of the mindfulness portion of the Fest. She will play a set of crystal bowls in a live performance while Lisa Jill Allison paints a canvas for a symbiotic art and sound experience. Sound can be used to unblock creativity and focus the mind. Deena describes a crystal bowl sound bath as a meditative acoustic sound concert. It is quite an experience to be immersed in vibrational sound, one that lulls the listener into a peaceful and mindful state of being.

 

 

For those who are unfamiliar with crystal bowls, each one is made from 99.8 percent pure quartz crystal and is tuned to a particular note of the musical scale. When played, the sound frequencies affect brainwave activity, slowing down brain waves to enter a deeply restorative state, where the body rebalances itself to self-heal.  “Creative mindfulness activities assist in the development of self-awareness and resilience,” says Deena. Both mindfulness and art creation are linked to a flow state, one that allows a person to think in different ways. “When we practice mindfulness, we’re practicing the art of creating space for ourselves – space to think, space to breathe, space between ourselves and our reactions,” she adds.  Deena believes that, “The Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest offers the opportunity to explore different modalities and find local providers who can help people discover and embrace new ways of managing their life. Ultimately, community is immunity.”

The January 2021 Art Show in the Gardens will feature local, regional and renowned artists of all mediums. The event will be held at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, located immediately south of the intersection of Westmoreland Blvd. and Port St. Lucie Blvd. (2410 SE Westmoreland Blvd). Show times to the public will be 9 am to 4 pm, both days. Setup will commence Friday (January 1, 2021) from 10 am to 6 pm and must be complete prior to 8:30 am on Saturday morning (January 2, 2021).

* For those artists/vendors who were NOT with us in our 2020 show, the following items will need to be submitted in order to be considered for our show and reviewed by our jury.

* Returning artists/vendors who were with us in 2020 do not need to submit photos of work, display or bio.

CONFIRMATIONS: If you are accepted, additional show information such as lodging, parking, set-up times, directions, etc. will be included in your confirmation. This will be emailed to you upon receipt of your booth fee. Please review this information carefully as it includes important event details.

 

CANCELLATIONS: Any cancellation made for any reason less than 45 days prior to an ART show is Non-Refundable. Cancellations will be due in writing (email preferred) in our office AT LEAST 45 days prior to the show date. We understand that problems arise and everyone cancels for reasons beyond their control; however, please understand there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. In the event the Art Show is Cancelled for any reason – all both fees are fully refundable. NOTE: The Art Show Committee has developed a layout and plan that allows for social distancing and safety. PAYMENTS: Payment will be accepted by Check or on-line through our payment processing system. Please note the name of the festival and your full name on the check to avoid confusion. Make all checks payable to Friends of the PSLBG.

 

PROCESSING TIME: Please allow at least 1-2 weeks to process your application from the date it is received. Please always try to apply as early as possible to make for a smooth process and to avoid late fees.

 

AWARDS: Ribbons & Cash Awards will be given for 1st Place ($250), 2nd Place ($150) and Honorable Mention ($100) in each category (2D, 3D, Jewelry & Fine Crafts), as well as one Best of Show ($500).

 

WAITING LIST: We have 80 available spaces. Once shows are closed or available space reserved, applications are still accepted for the waitlist. We will contact you as early as possible if any spaces become available. Please keep in mind that this may be as late as 2-3 days before the show. If you cannot work on short notice, the waitlist may not be the best option for you. If we call you from the waitlist to see if you would like to participate in the show, you have the option to turn us down without penalty.

 

PARTY WITH THE ARTISTS: 2021 brings a Saturday evening “Party With The Artists” Silent Art Auction and Reception. An opportunity for the public, guests and dignitaries to meet and talk with the artists, while enjoying a selection of hors d’oeuvres and light entrées, adult beverages and good music. Each approved Artist is provided with 1 ticket. Up to 2 additional tickets can be purchased by the Artist for $25 each. Tickets are on sale to the public for $50 each / $75 per couple.

 

CREDITS/REFUNDS: WE DO NOT ISSUE REFUNDS FOR CANCELLATIONS UNLESS notification is made at least 45 DAYS prior to the ART show. Cancellations must be made in writing (email preferred) and received in our office no later than December 1, 2020. In the event the Art Show is Cancelled for any reason – all both fees are fully refundable.

 

WEATHER: THIS IS AN OUTDOOR ART SHOW and will go on rain or shine. No credits or refunds will be issued if forces of nature beyond our control affect show. Please check our website or contact the office for updates on cancellations resulting from severe weather such as, hurricanes, tornados, flooding, etc. Please note, we will not cancel a show unless informed by state, city or local officials that it will be in the best interest of safety for all. If it looks like it is going to rain, we will not call a show prior to the event. It will be at the show coordinator’s discretion on site at the time.

EXHIBITOR RULES AND REGULATIONS:

The Volunteers at the Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens (FPSLBG) would like to thank you for your participation in our shows. In order for you to help us make our shows the best they can be, we have established standard accepted rules and regulations. To participate in our events, you MUST observe the following:

All work must be original, handcrafted, created and exhibited by the approved artists themselves. Kits, imports, and mass produced items are not allowed.

All categories shall be reviewed, juried and screened prior to your acceptance. Any media NOT approved during the application process that appears in your booth at the event will be asked to be removed. Categories include: 2d, 3d, jewelry & fine crafts.

Displays must be professional and aesthetically pleasing.

Exhibitors will leave their exhibit space clean after packing up at break down. If your space is not clean after an event, you may be expelled or rejected from future shows.

For the Art Show, the application fee must be paid at time of application submission. It is VERY important that you include your full name and phone number on your checks to avoid miscommunication.

The approved exhibitor will occupy his or her booth at all times. NO subletting or sharing of space without prior approval. Maximum of 2 Artists Sharing a booth with prior approval.

TAXES – Each exhibitor is responsible for collecting the state sales tax and filing a report with the local Department of Revenue St. Lucie County Sales Tax is 7%.

BANK FEES – A $35 bank fee will be charged on all returned checks.

TENTS – Exhibitors are responsible for making their tents sturdy against wind, rain etc. Tents MUST be manufactured of flame-retardant materials. Dollies are suggested for set-up and breakdown for most shows! No vehicle will be permitted on the event lawn 30 Minutes prior to event opening and 30 minutes after event closing. Any vehicle not complying with these rules with be towed.

Exhibitors will receive an ample amount of booth space, which varies depending on the on the space selected. Exhibitors will NOT take up any additional space without first consulting with a show coordinator. ALL WORK, DISPLAY and STORAGE WILL NOT GO BEYOND THE ASSIGNED EXHIBITOR SPACE.

The exhibitor’s space shall be occupied by 8:45 a.m. the morning of the show or you will be considered a “no -show” and your space will be given away with no possible refund or credit.

Set-up and breakdown times will be strictly enforced. Please see show confirmation for details.

Your space number and event map will be provided the Monday prior to the show (Earlier if we have the final layout completed).

Management reserves the right to make final interpretations of all rules and regulations.

 

GENERAL RELEASE

The undersigned does hereby discharge, release and hold harmless, FPSLBG (all cities, property owners, and associations) and all co-sponsors from any and all manner of action, suits, damages, or claims whatsoever arising from any loss or damages or claims, to the person or property of the undersigned while in possession or under the supervision of the sponsors during the Art Show, and hereby consents to enforcement of all rules of this event. Furthermore, the undersigned artist hereby certifies that all display work is handcrafted and created by the show participant. Participant understands that any mass-produced item on display can cause expulsion from the show or future shows. There are no rain dates. MANAGEMENT RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY ANY EXHIBITOR CAUSING ANY PROBLEMS TO FELLOW EXHIBITORS OR MANAGEMENT. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations set forth on the reverse side of this General Release may result in expulsion from any and/or all events. Management reserves the right to make final interpretation of all rules.

 

The applicant understands that if this application is not accepted, all fees and photos will be returned by FPSLBG has your permission to reproduce artwork, through the photographs you have submitted, for the purpose of advertising and marketing the Festival. FPSLBG also has your permission to publish photographs or videos taken of your booth, work and photos of you during the Art Show for purposes related to promotion of the Festival, past or future.

Kirsten’s Inspiration

Kirsten tells The Rickie Report, “I have always been inspired by nature. The plants and animals in my childhood yard in the Philippines hosted many an adventure, and led me to a master’s degree in biology. But somehow important issues, stories and even the wildlife I so adored lost their magic when defined by columns of scientific numbers. I now strive to convey environmental issues and stories through my writing and photography, without sacrificing the magic“.

Like a human finger print, each zebra has distinctive stripes. This variation seemed most prominent to me on the tail, particularly in this grouping of zebras in a water hole at Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park where each of these zebras had a bold yet unique tail pattern.

 

I seek to provide an intimate perspective on nature from around the world, reflecting wildlife, their behaviors, and habitats both in an unaltered documentary- style and in a more interpretive abstract style achieved in-camera to convey the emotional experience.

Found only on Isla Escudo de Veraguas in Panama’s Bocas del Toro archipelago, Pygmy Three-Toed Sloths are listed Critically Endangered. This one was asleep in a mangrove tree when we arrived by boat, looking up only momentarily as the boatman demonstrated its mating whistle.

 

Focus on the Natural World

It was two memories from my childhood in the Philippines that really transformed my love of exploring nature into a passion for environmental conservation….

The first was a bird – the kind of flamboyant bird one imagines from the tropics with bright colors and elaborate plumes. I’d never seen a bird like it in our yard before but as I raced to the window for a better view, a young stranger shot it from the tree with a slingshot. The bird was bagged and gone before my family had a chance to protest. I never saw another like it.

As the sky outside St. Augustine, Florida blazed with sunset colors, the marsh before me glowed orange and gold. Water ripples became black lines across a scene that looked more like graphic art than a wetland. Then this Great Blue Heron emerged from the vegetation, returning the scene to nature once again.

 

The other memory wasn’t a single event but rather the progressive change in scenery along our weekly commute between Manila and our rural home in Cavite. Slowly but steadily stilt-houses in small coastal fishing villages and thatch huts in luscious rice fields succumbed to bulldozers and concrete. The last time I took the route, 25 years ago by now, the city had all but engulfed our formerly provincial compound. I could count on one hand the remaining patches of green. I mourned for the children I saw playing at the highway’s edge. They would never chase the end of a rainbow through meadows and mango orchards to find a pool of golden light at the end as I once had.

My day on the Serengeti was drawing to a close. A lone hartebeest stood silhouetted against the evening sky. A large, uniquely horned African antelope, the outline of a hartebeest is distinctive. This was likely a male, overseeing his territory prior to nightfall.

 

How I Get My Shots

I’ve always been an explorer…

 

I’m happiest tromping barefoot through the mud, along a stream, in a tidepool or anywhere I might find something new and exciting to experience in nature. Whether I was in a big city or some remote jungle, I was always seeking unusual plants and animals regardless of whether it was a single flower peeking from a crack in a sidewalk or a troop of howler monkeys swinging through the trees.

Protected within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in the United Arab Emirates, this pair of mountain gazelles (Gazella gazella) peeked down at me from atop their camouflaging dune. Wary with reason given their IUCN Red-listing as Vulnerable, these Arabian Peninsula natives are extirpated across broad portions of their natural range.

 

I minimize post-processing and avoid digital manipulation.


I attempt to stay as true to the moment as possible and because nature is impressive without human intervention. With my photography and writing, I aim to lure viewers more deeply into the natural world than they might venture on their own. I aim to reflect nature and inspire conservation.

 

 

Kirsten’s Entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020

I’ve been participating in the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest since I first discovered it in 2015. The title alone caught my attention, and I was hooked when I realized it wasn’t just a namesake, the goal was in fact conservation.

Skin differences between a baby and mother elephant signify aging. In the surrounding savanna, ancient baobab trees have no saplings. Elephants cannot migrate across Africa, restricted to parks for their protection. Habitats suffer without respite. Yet outside, 96 elephants a day die for ivory.

Two iconic arctic predators – a polar bear and a gray wolf, both large males – assess one another in Manitoba, Canada. The pair circled one another, there were a couple of false charges, and ultimately, they went their separate ways. Perhaps they know, a heating planet is the true enemy.

 

 

When I looked into the non-profit being supported by the show, I realized an even deeper personal connection. I had volunteered at the Center for Great Apes https://www.centerforgreatapes.org over a decade prior with a group of friends. We’d stayed in a house alongside a baby chimpanzee who’d needed personalized care, and helped build a new boardwalk between outdoor enclosures. It is a center built from love, to provide long-term care and a family for primates that can never be returned to the wild and to try and prevent future incursions.

The ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography contest carries this love forward, passionately promoting endangered species and environmental conservation while creating a family of friends. I’m honored to be part of that family.

I wondered what this silverback Mountain Gorilla pondered as I visited its forested home in Rwanda. Perhaps it was the routine oddity of daily human visits, visits that however odd have helped protect this critically endangered species, shifting economic incentives from poaching and deforestation to tourism.

How Can Artists Help?

 

We live at a time when our environmental challenges are greater and more global than ever before. We are losing species at unprecedented rates and climate extremes are no longer regional, they’re becoming our planetary norm. We also live at a time when people are constantly inundated with words and images through the internet and social media.

 

We live in a world of competing messages and it is of utmost importance the health of the earth remains at the forefront of that messaging. Every artist who includes endangered species and conservation as part of their work is helping to keep this essential message alive.

 

Humans must learn to co-exist with nature, before we too must join the list of endangered species.

Kirsten’s next planned round of solo exhibitions will coincide with the release of my Wild Florida book, likely in 2022. In the interim, my studio gallery in Coconut Grove is open by appointment and I continue to participate in group exhibitions as opportunities arise. At the moment my work is on display with the Ft. Lauderdale branch of the National League of Pen Women at Broward College in Davie.

My presentation schedule has been put on hold during the pandemic, but I anticipate rescheduling several talks in the fall, hopefully including presenting my new Dry Tortugas National Park book at the Miami International Book Fair.  I will also continue teaching bird photography workshops in partnership with Tropical Audubon Society, and I will lead a multi-day workshop and trip to Dry Tortugas National Park next spring. This global, juried, online art contest focuses attention on the plight of endangered/threatened species/habitats. The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either:

 

• Celebration of the beauty of endangered or threatened species/habitats

• Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats Categories for Entry:

Fine Art (including sculpture, jewelry and wearable art) Fine Art Photography (digital manipulation accepted)

Young Artists (birthdays on or after October 1st, 2001). We will accept individual or class/group entries.)

We are sorry, but we cannot accept video or film entries in the contest.

 

Each entry of a single image must be accompanied by a donation of $25 USD that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes http://www.CenterForGreatApes.org. Young Artists enter one image accompanied by a donation of $5 USD.

There is no limit on the number of entries that may be made.

Covid-19 Impact on Exhibition

Planning an exhibition in the Covid-19 era presents significant issues. We hope for the best, but must consider that resurgence of the virus could force last- minute cancellation or strict social distancing, severely limiting visitor numbers. We will make a decision mid-summer as to whether the real life exhibition will take place.

The Juried Contest to determine the winners of our $7,000 in prize money will go ahead, closing date on  September 30, 2020.

We are developing an exciting virtual exhibition to run regardless of the Covid-19 situation. This exhibition will run from November 1 to December 31, 2020. Jury scores (and fit with the theme) will determine the top placed pieces that will get the best positioning. We will be able to feature 100 pieces in the virtual 2-month show rather than the 50 we can accommodate in the real life show. Another great plus is that we will be able to feature EVERY entry as we will reserve an additional 25 places for a “rolling exhibition” so every piece will be featured for at least 5-7 days.

All pieces may be offered for sale (or not depending on preference) and we will be including links to artist websites and bios as well as full details on the piece.

We are planning interesting online events to run during the exhibition.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of all entrants to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.

Please note: Entries made after May 31st are not refundable should the physical exhibition not take place. Entries made before May 31st will be refunded providing the artist notifies Lindsey@art4apes.com by June 30th.

The Virtual Artist in Residence Program is awarded monthly to the artist (or photographer) who has submitted 3 or more entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 and has been selected by the Curatorial Committee as best interpreting the aims of the Contest.

 

 

The successful Artist will be featured and promoted by Art4Apes for one month and will receive the following opportunities:

• Weekly social media posts featuring your artwork
• You will be featured in our monthly newsletter
• We will design an eflyer for you to send out to clients and contacts • We will set up a dedicated page for you on the Art4Apes website

o You will have the opportunity to craft a personal message about your art and commitment to wildlife and the environment.

o We will include your full bio and artist statement
o We will include a virtual gallery of up to 10 pieces of your work
o We will issue news updates featuring your current work, exhibitions, awards, direction of new work etc.
o We will feature your work in an article in The Rickie Report – South Florida’s most influential online arts report.
o We will offer up to 5 pieces of work for sale on our online website (price to include a 30% donation to the Center for Great Apes.

We regret that we cannot offer this to Young Artists at the moment. Artists can only be featured once a year.

Meet Deborah Knowlson

Inaugural Virtual Artist in Residence April, 2020

 

 

Deborah Knowlson tells The Rickie Report, “I’m a self-taught watercolor artist. Wildlife and nature are a life-long passion, even if the painting is new. The skills and the subject matter, wildlife and nature, came naturally to me.  I was born in London, England, and now live in Oregon, US. My interests revolve around nature: art, gardening, science, friendships, hobbies, and outdoor activities. But, I am not young.  As the world became more affected by climate change, stresses on nature, and impacts of trafficking animals I became aware that speaking up and expressing concern and hope is something anyone can do regardless of age and situation. I chose to do it through painting. My family and friends are supportive and I am proud and grateful for anything I can do to raise awareness and participate in protecting what I love“.

I painted this watercolor to support Lola ya Bonobo, the world’s only sanctuary for bonobos rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.  Esake was rescued on her way to a wildlife market after a bushmeat hunter killed her mother. “Reaching the Heart,” this watercolor was auctioned at the #BeJane Jane Goodall-Institut, Austria in 2019.  It represents the hope that is found by reaching the heart of people to care about wildlife and nature.  You can see the image of Dr Jane holding (oh my!) I chose the three paintings of Asian elephants to enter into the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 because they are a family group.  The relevance of this in these strange times is that we have all retreated from the world into our own families due to the health situation.  Whether our family is just ourselves, or our immediate family, our focus suddenly changed to what is precious and who matters to us.  Elephants have incredible ability to bond and feel empathy for their family and herd.  In these times we, ourselves, can empathize with this ability and understand that all living creatures are worthy and their family and herd is as important to them as we are to our ourselves.  

 

 

Let’s honor that.

How Can Art Help?

 

Deborah says, “My message to other artists who paint wildlife and nature for awareness of conservation and animal welfare is that we often feel like we are not achieving anything by doing so. Who will see our art? Who will understand our message? Will it make any difference in the vast need for humankind to meet all its needs while caring about wildlife and nature”?

Most days we say, “No, it’s too little and it’s just a drop in the bucket.” Yet, many of us keep dropping in the bucket and keep up our small contribution.

Our ability to capture the spirit of animals and wildlife and attract people’s attention is part of a far bigger picture of individuals who work hard and dedicate their lives and careers to attempting to save species, lands, seas, and skies in a rapidly changing environment with many pressures on nature.

 

Will art make a difference?

 

A person took the time and interpreted something wild or a situation and shared that with others to say, this is relevant, this is important, please look at this. And people do! People like and enjoy various styles and forms of art, there is no right and wrong way to do it.

 

So enter contests; exhibit work, sell and donate pieces, speak up, and keep at it. There is no good that comes from hours of creating that results in a piece sitting in a closet and not shared.

There is nothing to lose. Every little bit helps.

This global, juried, online art contest focuses attention on the plight of endangered/threatened species/habitats. The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either:

 

• Celebration of the beauty of endangered or threatened species/habitats

• Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats Categories for Entry:

Fine Art (including sculpture, jewelry and wearable art) Fine Art Photography (digital manipulation accepted)

Young Artists (birthdays on or after October 1st, 2001). We will accept individual or class/group entries.)

We are sorry, but we cannot accept video or film entries in the contest.

 

Each entry of a single image must be accompanied by a donation of $25 USD that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes http://www.CenterForGreatApes.org. Young Artists enter one image accompanied by a donation of $5 USD. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be made.

 

Cash prizes totaling $3,250 will be awarded in both Fine Art and Fine Art Photography categories. Cash prizes totaling $500 USD will be awarded in the Young Artists Contest.

 

Prizewinners plus an invited selection of entries of significant merit will be offered places in the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Exhibition in Miami, December 2nd-5th, 2020 during Art Basel Week. Entries will be selected based on the jury panel scores and in the context of a coherent, curated exhibition. Keep checking your Juried Art Services account for updates.
