Debut of The Thriving Art Exchange:

 

 

On January 31st, we kicked off three days of art-business talk in south Florida with a reception at Claire and Jack Rosen’s CJR Fine Arts & Frame gallery in Royal Palm Beach. The event marked the debut of CHF’s Thriving Art Exchange, which brings together leading voices from all facets of the art world to foster dialogue in the industry—both in person and online. In this time of upheaval, we’re encouraging collaboration and helping to build an art industry where everyone can thrive.

The following morning marked the start of our Ft. Lauderdale Art-Business Conference at ArtServe, co-hosted by the Broward County Cultural Division and sponsored by Wells Fargo. The event drew an impressive and inspiring bunch of artists! South Florida’s arts community is in savvy and passionate hands. Our interactive workshops are designed to be their own kind of Thriving Art Exchange, fostering dialogue and collaboration. We provided these artists with a strong foundation for growing their businesses, and they in turn shared their stories and offered us terrific suggestions that we’ll be incorporating into future conferences and CHF curricula.

Smack in the middle of the workshops, four leaders from the local arts community graciously shared their expertise in our Roundtable Q&A: Ilene Adams, marketing expert, graphic designer, and artist; Deborah Bigeleisen, painter and former owner of a global textile print-design company; Janeen Mason, artist, curator, author, illustrator, speaker, and arts advocate; and Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report (which covers southeastern Florida’s visual-art scene) and guest of honor at our Thriving Art Exchange Reception. These amazing women led a spirited discussion that covered a lot of ground, including how to find public art and grant opportunities; getting involved with south Florida’s local gallery scene; and making art fairs work for you. Ultimately, participants learned that art-business success requires engaging with people in honest and meaningful ways. It’s not about sales but rather true connections.

The Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Artists (CHF) announces its Art Business Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, inspiring visual artists to “Conquer the Changing Marketplace.” This weekend long business development workshop will give professional working artists the chance to take a deep dive into the business side of their art careers. Scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2019, the event is funded in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners through the Broward Cultural Council. June is a very active month at the Art School; Youth Summer Art Camp just started as well as the Summer Teen Art Workshops, 5 X 5 Student Exhibition at the School Gallery will take place on June 6, the Art School Faculty Exhibition and Artist Talk at the Wolgin Gallery at the Boca Raton Museum in Mizner on June 21 and Summer Adult classes for term A also started this week to make The Art School a very exciting and inspiring place to be.

 

 

10 WEEKS OF EXCITING AND CHALLENGING

YOUTH SUMMER ART CAMP

Led by professional art educators, children explore art techniques and artistic concepts. Art projects are geared to age groups 5-7, 8-10, and 11-12. Themed weeks and a wide variety of creative projects stimulate children’s imagination. A balance is sought between preserving children’s natural creativity and learning new skills to better express themselves.

All workshops from Figure Drawing, Fashion Design and Sewing, Photography and Video Production, Comics, Portfolio Development, Jewelry Making and Paper Sculpture and Beyond, meet Tuesdays through Fridays.

Build Your Portfolio. What defines a saleable collection of photographic art? What are the common mistakes that undermine photographers? This presentation will address how to create a thoughtful, compelling portfolio designed to appeal to your chosen audience. Bring your laptop with your best images. We will be working hands-on with each student to put together their best portfolio.

 

 

 

Know Your Audience. Successful photographers have a clear concept that appeals to their target audience. We’ll help you niche, niche, niche to really understand the psychology of who will buy your artwork and why. This presentation addresses marketing principles, sales triggers, building value, and buyer behavior. Using examples of photographers with strong core concepts, we’ll take a look at how this works – then apply it to your personal situation and goals. This essential session can be transformative!

Tell Your Story. Excellent photography is crucial to making sales, but your story is equally important. Buying art is an emotional decision. As you learn how to best share your passion, your technique and your expertise, you make yourself as the photographer an integral part of every purchase. In this workshop, you will begin to write and hone your own artist story, and understand how to tell it.

 

 

 

 

Brand Your Business. Once your portfolio is put together, you’ll need to think about branding. This includes your website, your color schemes, your framing, and your booth design if you are doing art shows. Build a memorable brand through consistency and professionalism – we’ll show you how.

 Carolyn Edlund has an extensive background as an entrepreneur, writer, speaker and art business consultant. Her background includes owning a production ceramic studio for twenty years, selling product into over 1,000 retail accounts during that time. Subsequently, she was an outside sales rep for the largest art publisher in the world, earning “Rep of the Year” honors. In 2009, she founded ArtsyShark, recognized as a “Top 10” art blog by Art Business News, which publishes art marketing and business articles, and features individual artists in portfolio articles. She is also the Executive Director of the Arts Business Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to professional development for artists and makers, that presents business workshops throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Armory Art Center Offers Summer Camp For Grades 1 Through 12 And Summer Art Academy For Career-Minded High School Students

The “Summer Art Experience” at the Armory Art Center is filled with fun and creativity for grades 1 through 12. Innovative weekly themes include drawing, painting, sculpture, jewelry, fashion, ceramics, and printmaking. Teens can discover the latest developments in 3-D printing technology with the Armory’s new 3D jewelry and ceramics printers. Activities take place June 5 through August 4th. The Armory Summer Art Experience includes public receptions showing artwork created during each session and field trips. for Incoming Juniors

A student portfolio is a vital part of admission and scholarship decisions. This week-long workshop will assist students in the thoughtful selection and arrangement of pre-existing artwork. The instructor will make recommendations for work that needs to be added for the best outcome.
Emphasis will be placed on:
• Work process
• Technical and analytical skills
• Aesthetics
• Time management

Be prepared for the portfolio review

DAY 1: Introduce Yourself – As an artist, student, and visionary
Day 2: Critical Thinking – Is your portfolio complete?

Amber is an instructor of sculpture at FAU. She attended Dreyfoos School of the Arts for Visual Art, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and received her MFA from Florida Atlantic University

INTENSIVE DRAWING & SCULPTURE WORKSHOP
for Incoming Freshmen

Rising freshmen in art school need to strengthen their two-dimensional and three-dimensional
skill sets. In this workshop young students will:
• Navigate drawing (2D) and sculpture (3D) as a powerful way to express how the artist sees
the world.
Explore drawing and sculpture materials and tools.
• Create using both imagined situations and observable nuances of the human figure and the
environment.
Sculpture……..10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Learn about volume, mass, and structure while building with clay.
Lunch and break 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Drawing……..1:30 – 3:30 pm

A focus will be on observational drawing such as perspective in interiors, the structure of the human body, and scale in a still life.

Sculpture Instructor: Joshua Davis

Joshua studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design where he earned his BFA. At Florida University he earned his MFA with an emphasis in painting and industrial and mechanical design.

Drawing Instructor: Vishan Seenath

Vishan is a graduate of Dreyfoos School of the Arts and earned a BA in studio art at FSU. He attended West Dean College in the UK, where he earned an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Sussex.
