Watercolor by Gustave Wander

Gustave Wander

Born in New York City in 1924, Gustave Wander spent much of his first career as a commercial artist, illustrating lighting fixtures for marketing use and working in the photoengraving business. Even during his time in the U.S. Navy, he was assigned to the CBs, where his ability to accurately draw was put to immediate use.

After 25 years, he moved from a commercial artist to his passion—watercolors. Discarding the pencils of his illustrating days, Wander paints his scenes without sketching any preliminary outlines. His signature style has earned him 25 awards and numerous accolades. His original painting of musical stars Jack Teagarden, Eddie Condon, Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman, instruments included, is part of the American Jazz Collection in the New York Public Library. A gentle, peaceful and eternally optimistic man, Wander has served as a role model and inspiration to many who thought the opportunity for them to develop as artists had passed them by.

This solo exhibit bears testimony to his creativity and artistic energy—still painting and inspiring others at the age of 92!
