Once Barbara retired, she and her husband Jerry, began creating a wide range of ceramic art using alternative firing processes. Her vessels have a strong physical presence and distinctive profiles that are truly elegant. While in the unglazed phase, her work may appear constrained but through the process of metallic glazes, colors and the final firing process call “Raku’, the vessels are transformed, adding layered dimensions of light and movement, creating a beautiful finished piece.

Barbara tells The Rickie Report,“I work to first produce subliminal, physical features that evoke a desire to hold the piece, simply because it feels good. Creating an appealing work of art that functions through both the physical and visual realm is the highest achievement I can strive for”.

The hot new place to be this season is located in an Historic FEC Train Depot building in the heart of the City of Lake Worth, Florida. The 14,000 square foot Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts is attracting hundreds of interested people to its brand new hot shop. With three glory holes and two furnaces they have been scheduling back-to-back classes ever since they reopened in October.

Throughout the summer, Founder, JB Berkow along with Anita Holmes, Executive Director and Rick Eggert, Creative Director have worked hard to design an impressive line up of programming for the upcoming season.  They have four outstanding, world renowned Visiting Glass Artists coming to the center in 2016. These events will be three-day affairs. Thursday nights will be a private sit-down-dinner party where the artist will talk about their processes and inspirations. Friday nights will be a gallery opening centering around the visiting artist’s works and featuring two dimensional works by local artists.

Finally, Saturday will be an afternoon demonstration by the visiting artist. Never before has there been this type of opportunity for Palm Beach County residents to meet and greet four of the top glass artists in the world and have the rare chance to learn about their processes, inspirations and actually see them creating. Visit the Center’s website to view the details and to register and pay for the Thursday and Friday night events.

The first of these events will coincide with the Lake Worth Art Synergy Event, which the Benzaiten Center is hosting for the second year in a row. Last year they had 32 local artists and organizations taking part in a mini-art-fair within the empty 5,000 square foot space of the building that will eventually house their fine art metal foundry. This year the highlight and kick-off to the event will be world-renowned glass artist, Laura Donefer, conducting a glass-blowing demo from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday, January 23. After that, will be an Art Synergy Awards Ceremony. Festivities will continue until 8pm with live music, light nibbles, wine and beer and is open to the public free of charge.

They also have a stimulating series of lectures every first Tuesday of the month from 6pm – 8pm. Every second Wednesday of the month they hold a Hump of the Hump Happy Hour from 5:30pm – 7:30pm in the evening featuring a glass blowing demo, wine, beer, and live entertainment. There are several fundraisers planned for the 2016 season including their signature event, ‘Glasstronomique,’ a ‘Casablanca Casino Night,’ and a cocktail party in the home of a major glass collector. They will also hold a community ‘Summer Solstice’ party in June. Again, check  website for dates, times and registration details.

“Inspired By Soldner” by Abbey Funk

To create this collection of ceramic art, Abbey and Barbara merged into a dynamic duo, bringing distinctly different skill sets to the table.

BarbPowellRaku

Raku Fired Vessel by Barbara Powell

Working together from start to finish, Abbey and Barbara created a comprehensive and explosive collection of 3 dimensional fine art. Abbey  has turned the use of the potter’s wheel into the art of making extraordinary wheel sculptures that defy height and balance. Emerging from them are unworldly critters that can withstand the shock of the Raku flame.

AbbeyFunk3

“Untitled #3” by Abbey Funk

Every sculpture and vessel in the exhibition was finished with an atmospheric or alternative firing process. In this way, smoke and fire are truly the inspiration for this show.

Along with her latest creations, Barbara will be bringing many of the tools used to make them. Her works are beautifully decorative and affordable. Her knowledge of Raku and Saggar firing is extensive. This is your opportunity to acquire an appreciation for these ancient firing techniques, and to sign up for workshops to “Do It Yourself.”

Abbey Funk tells The Rickie Report, “I am a Conceptual artist. I create with purpose and for a reason. Through my chosen mediums of Clay and Metal, I express emotions and ideas. I create tangible stories that are always ready to be shared, infinitely patient in their completion. I create environments. I show Truth. I intend for the viewer to Question. As an artist, I seek constant growth and expansion. I push myself. I love the unknown. Experimentation is my answer for everything. There is beauty in creative failure and ‘mistakes’. Success is never giving up”.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”- Rumi

Abbey Funk was born in Wellesley, MA in 1979. She completed a BFA in Studio Art at Florida Atlantic University in 2005, and moved to Brooklyn, NY after graduation. She worked in Manhattan as a Graphic Artist until 2010, and then returned to South Florida to focus on creating Fine Art. Working predominantly in clay, she also creates sculptures made of metal, gemstones, and found objects.

She became Adjunct Faculty at Palm Beach State College in 2011 and quickly turned into a sought-after pottery teacher in local ceramics studios. In 2012, she opened A. Funk Studio in Delray Beach, FL as a founding member of the art colony Artists Alley. Funk began working in metal in 2014. Her artwork is well-known throughout South Florida, and she has shown in venues in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Hollywood, FL.

Both artists create at the Flamingo Clay Studio. The Studio is located at 216 South F Street with studio opportunities and workspace for 3-D Artists. For information call Joyce Brown-215-205-9441 or visit:
