Molly Grant began leather working in her early 20’s, first by working on her own and then by apprenticing at the Black Swan Leather shop in Portsmouth, NH, where she learned the basic skills of traditional leather working. In 1991, Molly had the opportunity to meet Paul Mathews, owner of the Cordwainer Shop; within a few months’ time Molly was traveling to National juried craft shows with Paul and learning the Cordwainer craft.

The Cordwainer Shop Custom Footwear, Women’s Sandal

The Cordwainer Shop was founded in the 1930’s by Edward F. Mathews. His son, Paul, carried on the shop tradition as main designer, and except for a 4 year stint in WWII, shoemaking became his life’s work and joy. Molly Grant now carries on the Cordwainer tradition of custom handmade footwear that also includes her own line of handbags. Traveling the country to fine juried craft shows, creating shoes and teaching shoemaking workshops has become as much a passion to Molly as it was to Paul.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the House of Refuge is one of ten houses of refuge along Florida’s east coast. These “houses” were havens for sailors and travelers who were shipwrecked along the coastline. According to the House of Refuge website, these establishments were, “run by the United States Lifesaving Service, the Houses played a critical role in a time when sailing ships dominated the world commerce.”
