Helen Kagan’s Paintings Took Miami by Storm – Now Showing at Art Synergy

Helen Kagan grew up in the former USSR, a communist State where oppression and control were a daily reality. In 1991 a quest for freedom led her to the US where she brought a Jewish heritage, a PhD in Science, Master’s in Psychology, and an unending thirst to explore life’s meaning.  Having lived and worked in VT, WI, MN, NJ, NY, FL, and equipped with another Masters degree, Helen spent much of her time as a social worker developing and leading programs and providing holistic services to those in need.

As both a therapist and an artist, Helen believes tragedy, pain and trauma can be healed with positive energy, love, and self-expression.  The Rickie Report is pleased to share Helen’s newest work during Art Synergy/Art Palm Beach at 2 locations: OSGS in Northwood and Continuum at 312 Clematis Street W. Palm Beach.  The details are in this article.

Helen Kagan, PhD, a refugee from Russia, is a holistic therapist and artist. Her “Healing Arts” blends her own life experience into a visual form emphasizing the healing power of art.   Helen works mainly with oil but lately is experimenting with acrylic and mixed media. Her canvases are influenced by impressionism and mainly, expressionism. They are varied, vibrant, some are raw, some refined, all are intuitive.

Coming from a family of scientists, Helen was always fascinated by the left and right brain relationship. She’s been developing her unique technique and style in “Healing Arts” expressing the past, present and future with pure boldness and emotion, always looking for ways to communicate on levels often not yet understood.

Primarily self-taught, Helen’s been painting for as long as she remembers herself, since 2005 does it professionally. Her intention is to create a solid body of Healing Art to serve people and communities in need. She envisions her art to be placed in Hospitals, Medical Centers, Rehabilitation, Multicultural, Crisis Centers – to enhance healing and well-being. ARTIST STATEMENT

Helen shares, “For many of us art is a spiritual path, a transformational process, a way of being.  Communicating on subliminal levels, my art delivers the message of being on a spiritual Journey. My “Healing Arts” – is my unique way to integrate expressive art and the art of healing”.

"Stairway to Heaven" (Energy Series)

“Stairway to Heaven” (Energy Series)

She goes to explain, ” I believe that art heals.  I believe that art as a powerful form of self-expression becomes a vehicle for emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being.  Communicating on subliminal levels, my work delivers this message through positively charged intention, healing frequencies of color and energetically balanced composition. My canvases are varied, vibrant, some are raw, some refined, all are intuitive – bridges to the past, cities in the rain, street lights, domes, music, oceans, fields of sunflowers, moons, clouds, sunsets… However, the following themes are always present in my art – being on the Journey, moving towards the Light, awareness of ‘Here and Now’, and of course – ‘J’oie de vivre'”!

"Nostalgy"

“Nostalgy”

“I believe that tragedy, pain and trauma can be healed with beauty, positive energy, and self-expression. This is what I communicate through my art while reflecting my own colorful and deep perception of life, a desire to bridge the Realities and heal the Past.    I believe in mind-body-spirit connection. I believe art can enhance healing and promote well-being in a viewer.  My passionate art is a statement of my beliefs”, Helen tells The Rickie Report.

Amelia Costa

Amelia grew up in a large, close knit family in Peru.   She tells us, “My family emigrated to the United States, so that my siblings and I could attend University. I received a Bachelor of Science and after some time in the business world decided to pursue my interest in the arts. I attended Florida Atlantic University to study painting. I gravitated towards clay, just before graduation and stayed awhile longer to satisfy my curiosity and my growing fascination with the medium”.

“In my work, I have combined my two interests  in illustration and clay. Most recently I moved away from color and  concentrated on the story the pieces convey. My aim is to have the pieces tell the viewer the stories that they tell me, and share the journey with me”.

Irene Jalowayski

Palm Beach Smashing Glass

Irene tells us, “I am a retired speech pathologist and Florida native, who lives in West Palm Beach.  I was always an art lover/collector and began taking fused glass classes nine years ago.  I  studied with a private teacher, took classes at McMow Art Glass Center,  Art Glass Environments,  Kay Weiner’s Glass Classes, and in several out-of-town venues. Now I have my own studio because my hobby has become my passion!”

“Working with glass has allowed me to express my creativity and love for color, shape and form.  I get lost in my work and experience a thrill each time I open my kiln.  I  sell my work at several galleries and am thrilled to be one of the artists at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth, and  at the  OSGS Gallery in the Northwood neighborhood.  My creations have been exhibited in many juried art shows and I was featured as an Emerging Artist at ArtiGras, 2012”.  I can be reached by email at   Irene Jalowayski ijaloway@yahoo.com   or visit my website at www.palmbeachsmashingglass.com

Sharon Kurlychek

“I engaged with the energy of clay in the 70’s when I first learned to to throw pots on a kick wheel at art school in Cleveland, Ohio.  I took more advanced classes (David Vargo)  and the joy of clay settled into by hands.  In the 80’s, I lived in the Dominican Republic, where I taught English. Experimenting with the production of primitive pottery– digging clay deposits from riverbeds, creating glazes from the ashes I collected from a bakery’s wood-fired oven, and firing in open pits was joyful.  Back in the US, I bought an electric kiln, continued my art studies (The Cleveland Institute of Art and Andrea Gill from Alfred University) and began teaching at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood”.
Sharon Kurlychek

Sharon Kurlychek

“When I moved to Florida, for subsequent art festivals, I created a line of tropical number tiles. My website, www.islandtiles.com shows 12 designs.  Customers can choose the tiles and colors to place an order for a custom house number tile.  I also do commission work for tile murals and signs, working with designers, HOA’s or home owners, offering color sketches and cost estimates for custom work.  I can be reached through my website or e-mail: islandtiles@bellsouth.net.”
Sharon Kurlychek

” I am continually inspired by fellow clay artists (Betty Wilson and members of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches).  My art career has recently spun off in a new direction.  Taking classes (Carla Golembe at the Delray Center for the Arts), spending time in the artsy town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and a mixed media workshop (Dee Roper at La Fabrica Aurora) has had a big influence on the direction of my creativity!  Now I am creating mixed media pieces, acrylic paintings and collages!”

John tells us, “I am a functional potter. In my work, I strive for qualities of simplicity, honesty and  a sense of fluidity. When making my pots, I depend on intuition and feeling, rather than upon conceptual ideas and analysis. Natural and organic objects, along with the varied and rich traditions of ceramics are the main influences of my work. I have a very classical approach to clay, even when combining and altering forms”.
John McCoy

John McCoy

“During the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to put my work in  a wood fired Anagama kiln. I feel my forms have been enhanced and visually strenghthened by the warm colors of the ash deposits and the textures and patterns created by the mark of the fire. This natural process allows the viewer to share my experience  of working with clay, from the moment my hands shape and form the clay, leaving my mark, to the fluidity of the flames that leave their impression on the surface of the pot forever”.

"Dancer with Red Hair" by Bertram Lewis

“Dancer with Red Hair” by Bertram Lewis

For those not familiar with Bertram’s oil paintings, he describes them ” as figures created  by combining bold colors with abstract shapes and a push/pull technique that creates volume and depth without using traditional perspective.   Typically, traditional perspective is replaced by flat shapes; depth is achieved by using a push/pull technique and by arranging colors so that some will advance and others recede.”

He received his training primarily at the Art Students League in New York where he studied with such renowned contemporary artists as Burton Silverman, David Lefell, Greg Kreutz, and Costa Vavagiakis, among others.  He also studied with the well-known landscape painter David Dunlop at the Silvermine Artists Guild.

"Cellist" by Bertram Lewis

Working primarily in oil, Bertram has created portraits, figures, landscapes and still life. But, largely under the influence of abstract painter Frank O’Cain, he has moved towards more abstract work.   Today, his work involves impressionism and abstraction.  Bertram Lewis is known for his colorful abstract figure paintings.

In the late 1980’s Rolando worked as both an art’s writer and in galleries.  In 1991 he retuned home to South Beach in Florida where he established his first gallery, The Ground Level on Lincoln Road, with fellow artist Jenny Person. The early part of the 90’s were spent exhibiting his work throughout the US, and traveling through Europe, Latin America, and Asia. His career was interrupted abruptly in 1994 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

While the remainder of the 90’s and the early part of this century was spent confronting medical issues and complications in 2008 Rolando returned to the art world as a freelance photographer in Austin, Texas working on a documentary series of nightlife images. In 2009, Rolando returned to South Beach and by 2010 went moved north to Palm Beach County where he opened The ActivistArtistA Studio and Gallery and Established the Boynton Beach Art District. “Since opening my gallery, in a run-down industrial park in 2012, my dream was to develop the area into an art district and cultural center.  It has taken only 2 years to do so. Now that it has been cleaned up, repainted, and nationally branded – it’s ready to be presented to the arts world.

Rolando’s most recent effort is ArtSynergy.  ART SYNERGY is a countywide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community.  With a coordinated five-day event that includes over 60 galleries, studios, non-profit art exhibition institutions and museums in six art districts throughout Palm Beach County during the five-day fair, Jan. 23-28th. He will talk about the exciting art events happening in Palm Beach County.

Rolando will discuss the symbolism behind the imagery in his work and the influences that the Art Brut movement has had on his work.  He will have some of his work available for purchase.  As always, the evening is for artists and art lovers to hear about all of the exciting projects and initiatives that the art society is involved in and to find out how to participate.
