The Rickie Report has long considered networking a primary function of promoting the many creations of artists.  It is simply a good business practice!  After all, how will art lovers find your work to purchase?  We‘ve read numerous magazines (local, national and international) and newspapers ( in hand or digital), and think, “This is the perfect place for (add your name) to let people know about their (fill in the blank: artwork, jewelry, glass art,wood,hand sewn pocketbooks, sculpture,wearable art, classes, etc)”.  In this article we share some often overlooked opportunities for artists to share their news and for art patrons to find their newest purchase.  With 2017 already here – NOW is the time to NETWORK!

ABOUT NATIONAL LEAGUE OF AMERICAN PEN WOMEN

The Boca Raton Branch of the National League of American Pen Women is a prestigious organization of professional women in the Arts – Published Writers, Authors, Poets, Musical Composers and Award winning Artists.

NLAPW’s corporate headquarters is based in Washington, D.C. , where it oversees branches all over the United States. The League boasts membership of such prominent women as Eleanor Roosevelt, Erma Bombeck, and local well-known artist Edna Hibel. Vinnie Ream, the only woman to sculpt President Lincoln from life, was an early member of NLAPW. Her statue of Lincoln now stands in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

The Boca Raton branch is one of the largest in the country and will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2015. As a qualified member of Art, Letters or Music, each member is exposed to participation in Art Exhibits, Author Talks and various workshops. The State Of Art After “Season”

The Rickie Report has been writing articles about artists, art shows, art exhibits and contests for seven days a week, usually twice a day since September.  Art lovers and Art Patrons, can be reassured that art events continue to happen in Southeast Florida after “season” ends! Classes and exhibits are bountiful. Now is a good moment for Artists to consider the “business” of art.  We may not publish an article every day through the summer, but there are still events on our interactive Calendar of Events that you won’t want to miss.  

 

 

 

“Season” is over….

Artists keep on creating.  

Galleries still exhibit.

Arts organizations continue to program.  

Museums remain open.

There is less traffic.

Classes To Learn Art Techniques are being taught .

 It is easier to get a reservation for dinner.

Art and Handmade Fine Crafts Are Still Available!

And the Calls For Entries To Artists for next “season” are just beginning!

A Word To Art Lovers and Art Patrons:

Stop by galleries and art exhibits in “off season”.  

They’ll be less crowded with visitors – and you will have a chance to linger!  

This is a terrific time to hone your art skills, learn a new technique or make a creative play date with friends!

 

 

A Few Words To Artists:

 

 

NOW is a good time for artists who have been scurrying to meet too many overlapping deadlines for the past six months to organize themselves!  

 

Business Cards

 

 

  1. Are your business cards up to date?  
  2. Is it time to revisit the wording, font size or photos on them?
  3. Do you have enough cards to get you through the next 12 months?  NO ONE wants to run out in the middle of their busy time…Do it now!
  4. Personally, I like being able to make a note on someone’s business card, so shiny paper or too many words/photos prevent that from happening….

The hardest part of coming back home to your studio after an exhibit or show is putting everything away and staying organized for the next one.  

 

  1. Check your files to make sure they are up to date
  2. Mark off pieces you have sold from your inventory ( this makes paying taxes easier for next year, too)
  3. Are you missing pieces?  Now is a good time to play detective and found out where the missing pieces are.  
  4. Most exhibits have rules about artwork that is left after pick up dates.  Check on their status before your hard work is sold without you getting a commission.
  5. Bringing artwork of any kind to exhibits, shows, and galleries produces wear and tear.
  6. Check your frames for nicks and marks that need to be fixed.
  7. Check your mats and glass to be sure everything is in its proper position and in good condition.
  8. Check your hanging devices.  Avoid being removed from a show because your wire is too loose or unsteady.
  9. Update your inventory lists.

 

 

Take a moment for a mental inventory.  

  1. Are you happy with what you are creating?
  2. Is it time to try a new technique that you just haven’t had time for?
  3. Now is a perfect time to take a short-term class or workshop!
  4. Schedule some networking time with other artists.
  5. Talk about how this “season” has been for you.  Sharing insights can be helpful, if you don’t get into a round of grousing.  If something didn’t “work”, now you have time to reflect on what you can control – how you react and plan differently.
  6. Outline your business goals – yes! if you are selling your artwork, you are in business!

 

 

Buy a 2017 Calendar

( You already have a 2016 Calendar, Right?)

 

  1. Start by marking the dates of all exhibit and show deadlines you are applying to in RED.
  2. NOW: Mark the dates of those acceptance announcements and drop offs in BLUE.
  3. The Rickie Report is interested in sharing your good news!  As soon as you get the acceptance notice, send us an email about the event!  
  4. We are currently booking dates through December, 2017, so don’t hesitate to contact us!
  5. You may not have all of the details, but we can save you a spot in the publication queue.
  6. To get your article published, let us know 3-6 weeks before the Exhibition or Opening Reception.  
  7. Last minute openings are possible, but please do not plan on that, especially during “season”.  
  8. Giving us  6 weeks advance notice in “season” gives you more opportunities to choose a timely date for your publication.
  9. An article includes:  Who (you/art organization), What (Type of Event), When ( Exact dates of exhibit and specific dates and time of Receptions, including Hours of Operation), Where (Exact street address, contact name and phone number to ask more questions), Why ( if this is a fundraiser or for a charity, we will happily highlight the organization and include their website and social media addresses. Also: 6 jpegs, artist statement, brief bio, website address, social media addresses and anything else you want our readers to know about your artwork and creative process.
  10. It is FREE to subscribe to The Rickie Report.  We will bill you for articles.  There is no word maximum. Call for current rates.
  11. Invest in your art business and take a monthly ad. With 3 rotations of jpegs ( change them out at no charge monthly), you bring more readers (art lovers and art patrons, gallerists, museum personnel, show directors world wide) to your website.  Your ad is seen with every article we publish. Call for current rates.

Why participate? Exposure…

 

 

  • The event will be well promoted and well attended by art enthusiasts and collectors.
  • You can display a binder that is up to 9”x12” to showcase more examples of your work to potential buyers.
  • Each year the 50/50 Live Art Event and Auction has brought in more than 200 spectators.
  • You will have the chance to interact with attendees and distribute postcards and business cards.
  • You have the added benefit of enhancing your resume when you are accepted into this juried opportunity.
  • Your work is auctioned by a local radio personality who will promote the event on air.
  • You will keep 50% from the sale of your work.
  • The event and sale of your painting can be added to your bio and resume.
  • This is a prestigious juried event and you will be selected based on talent.
  • There is a $20 application fee.
  • Artists will be provided a 16”x20” canvas.
  • Artists must provide their own art supplies and set up their work stations.
  • Artists can use acrylic or any other non-toxic materials (no oils) but the work MUST be dry before the end of the painting session (6:30 – 8:30 p.m.) and must be ready to hang, even if it includes 3-D elements.
  • The starting bid of all work will be $50. The final bid price is split 50/50 between artist and the Armory.

A special art evening will be held on Saturday, October 18th  to benefit Domino’s Cat Rescue.  “Artstravaganza” will feature the historic Highwaymen as well as local and nationally acclaimed artists.  The mission of Domino’s Cat Rescue is to compassionately shelter, spay/neuter and offer for adoption all cats and kittens rescued by us or surrendered to us by the public in and around our local community. Our community outreach efforts increase awareness of spay/neuter programs in order to eliminate overpopulation and homelessness through feline sterilization.

The Florida Highwaymen, a group of 26 African-Americans, broke convention to paint beautiful iconic landscapes. Originating in the mid 1950’s, an era marked by racism and poverty, these self-taught entrepreneurs mentored each other while they painted on basic materials like Upson board for canvasses, and crown molding for frames. Local galleries shunned their work, so they peddled their art from car trunks along area roadways, hence their name. Their art freed them from work in citrus groves and labor camps, and they created a body of work that has become not only a timeless collection of a natural environment, but a symbol of determination and belief in oneself.*

The surviving Highwaymen, now in their sixties and seventies, are an important chapter in America’s culture and history, indeed, a National Treasure. Their self-determination in the face of adversity remains an important story of perseverance, inspiration and creativity.*

Jennifer Ross has been in the South Florida radio market for 33 years! No wonder she is looked upon as an icon, not only in the radio local radio industry, but in the market as a whole. Jennifer is a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan (her alma mater), the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. Can you tell she’s from New England?

She’s the proud mom of 2 beautiful daughters, loves all her animals (2 horses, 6 dogs, 3 cats, an annoying cow named Karma, 2 snakes, 2 bearded dragons and a couple of killer goldfish) and would marry George Clooney in a heartbeat.  

Jennifer loves to cook and eat Italian food, anything seafood, especially Maine lobster, enjoys horseback riding, gardening and reading. Jennifer sits on the board for LEAF (Law Enforcement Assistance Foundation) a charity that provides financial support to Palm Beach County police officers injured or killed in the line of duty. She has been involved with the March Of Dimes since 1981. For 2-years, she co-chaired the Saks 5th Avenue “Key To The Cure” event, which benefits breast cancer awareness, and currently sits on the board. She’s also involved with the ARC of Martin County, The Arthritis Foundation, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, JDRF, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Community Outreach Program and many more….

My Story

Knuckles arrived at the Center for Great Apes from a California entertainment compound when he was only two years old. He was believed to have been affected with cerebral palsy due to a lack of oxygen during his birth. His challenges were motor and muscle control, a weakness on the left side, and a lazy eye that didn’t allow him to focus on things.

 

 

 

Most two-year-old chimpanzees swing around actively and climb to tall heights, but Knuckles could not climb and barely walked when he arrived. When he was placed somewhere, he would just sit there until someone moved him. Although he couldn’t easily feed himself, he would eat if someone fed him.

 

 

Early MRI tests and EEG scans suggested that he was not likely to advance much and would stay the same or get worse. However, Knuckles has made steady progress and our expectations for him are all good.

After years of help from several dedicated volunteers and staff… as well as therapy from occupational and physical therapists who donated their time to help Knuckles, he has learned to feed himself, climb up and down steps, and pull himself up on special swings to hang upside down and play. He walks wherever he wants to go and occasionally runs when playing games of chase with other chimpanzees. He is very aware and cognizant of activities around him, likes to play and be tickled, and is very affectionate.

 

 

From the time of his arrival, he was introduced to Grub’s group through the mesh while still an infant. Grub, Toddy, Kenya, Brooks, and Noelle seemed to know Knuckles was “special” and have always been gentle with him. He eventually began having play sessions one-on-one inside the habitat with each of these chimpanzees, and can now tolerate about an hour of play, grooming, and running before he is exhausted. Every day, Knuckles spends time with Grub’s group standing outside the habitat where they can see him and touch him. Grub and Noelle are especially good with Knuckles and spend sitting next to him frequently grooming him. When the little female chimpanzee Kodua arrived from Hollywood at age two, she was introduced to the then 5-year-old Knuckles, and she also became one of his frequent playmates.

Our goal has always been to get Knuckles to the point where he can have the companionship of other chimpanzees. Now an adolescent (and is more than 120 pounds), his therapy from staff is limited. But with the recent construction of a special indoor/outdoor enclosure suited to the needs of handicapped and geriatric apes, Knuckles has the opportunity to live in his own habitat where the other chimpanzees can spend all day next to him, or short periods inside the enclosure playing with him… or even overnight visits in Knuckles’ nighthouse.

 

Taking on the challenge of raising a severely handicapped chimpanzee had to be carefully considered when we were approached to take Knuckles at the sanctuary. But, he has continued to exceed most expectations of his potential and abilities and has enriched the lives of not only the chimpanzees he interacts with, but also the staff, volunteers, and visitors who have been inspired by him.

All proceeds, including entry fee, will go directly to the Center for Great Apes, a sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees . This is a great opportunity for artists to highlight what they feel is ENDANGERED, be a part of the excitement of Art Basel week and support a wonderful sanctuary.

 

The Center for Great Apes’ mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, from research, or who are no longer wanted as pets. The Center provides care with dignity in a safe, healthy, and enriching environment for great apes in need of lifetime care. There are any number of ways artists or other professionals can choose to market themselves.  Let’s be honest:  if you want to be in business, you have to consider your marketing strategies.  The Rickie Report shares some ideas and observations in this article.

 

 

A Personalized Approach to Marketing

 

 

We all market something, even when it is not of our own making.  The clothing we wear tells our surrounding society a lot, especially items with logos, the name of your favorite bar or the latest place you’ve been on a vacation.  Let’s take that a step further.  What do you really want and need to market to be a professional artist or creative?

 

 

 

MARKETING  is an extension of your creative output, be it jewelry, paintings, sculpture, ceramics or decorative art.  Within the word itself is “MAKE” and we believe that hitting your “MARK” intensifies the word’s meaning even more.

 

 Have you looked at your website lately?

 

  • This is your face to the public.
  • Is it time to spruce it up?
  • Have you ever asked anyone to proof read it for you?
  • Let us be clear:  A “website” can be a landing page with your business information and a contact email and phone number.  It does NOT have to be complicated.

 

 Are you public relations monster?  

 

  • You can be effective and lovable without being overbearing.
  • Ten messages on Facebook in one day is overload.
  • Use different modalities to get the word out ( Facebook, Twitter, e-newsletter, The Rickie Report, print media, radio)
  • Once you are accepted to an exhibit or show, THAT is the time to contact the media.  Most media outlets need 6-8 weeks lead time, especially print.  The Rickie Report needs 3-4 weeks notice but you can always check with us in case we have an opening.
  • Have a general press release prepared. Include Who, What, When, Where,Why as well as How people can reach you.  Always include your website, Facebook page address, email and phone number.

 

WIIFM: What’s In It For Me?

 

  • Appreciate your supporters ( buyers and fans)
  • Send a thank you email to your clients when they make a purchase
  • Send an art card for Holiday wishes, birthdays and special sales
  • Give returning patrons a discount on their next purchase.

 

 

How does your creative work transform other people?

 

  • Know who your audience is
  • Who are your ideal clients?
  • Accept that you cannot meet everyone’s interests
  • How are you reaching out to your clients and potential patrons ?

 

Share something about yourself that goes beyond your art

 

  • In your Artist Statement, do you share the feelings that drive you to create?
  • Art patrons make purchases that touch their emotions.   This is an opportunity to connect with them.  Tell them the story behind your necklaces, how you began making mugs, why you chose the subject matter in a painting.
  • Do you have a favorite charity?  Tell that story.  Offer to donate a % of that day’s sales to a charity.
  • Offer to do a trunk show or exhibit for a charity.  If they receive a % of all sales, you can be sure they will let their supporters know about the event!
  • Be a little off-beat.  Have an unusual give-away which costs you minimally but will remind passersby about your artwork.  (We still use a fragment of wood as a paperweight from an artist who cut up his unusual frames into small pieces.  He took the time to sign it.  Every time we move it, his artwork comes to mind.)

 

 

 

A more personalized approach to marketing will help you connect with your audience.  It helps your audience become fans.  

For you to succeed in the business of art, you need both.

Steve Horan in SOLO Exhibit Shows Unique Views of Yellowstone, Introduces “Environmental Portraiture”

Steve Horan is a photographer living in the thriving artist’s community of Lake Worth in Palm Beach County, but over the last four years he’s also been visiting Yellowstone National Park to work on an ambitious photography project. The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County will exhibit some of Steve’s “environmental portraiture” in a SOLO show which opens February 15th.  The Rickie Report is honored to share this article with you.  Steve’s artistry gives us insight into a world few have understood or spent much time exploring.  Kudos to Steve!  We urge you to bring family and friends to share this experience.  More details are in this article.

“Environmental portraiture ” is how Steve Horan describes his latest series, “The People of Yellowstone”.  Horan’s goal is to capture the spirit of the people whose lives and work center around Yellowstone National Park and its surrounding ecosystem.  The project pairs Horan’s portraits and text by award-winning writer, Ruth W. Crocker for a forthcoming coffee table book.  Ninety subjects have been documented to date with over 30 more expected.

Horan collaborates with his subjects to photograph them in a setting that immediately tells the story of their connection to Yellowstone’s wilderness.  Yellowstone National Park covers the largest geothermal area in the world, a super-volcano, and is home to geysers, grizzlies, wolves, eagles, elks, and huge herds of wild buffalo. This project has involved over 40,000 miles of car travel (the Park covers three states) and has been entirely self-financed on a shoestring.

Steve has photographed a range of subjects: a naturalist guide sleeping in an abandoned wolf den, a super-volcano expert near ancient lava flows, and a wolf skin-wrapped biologist who has led the re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone Park, to name a few.

Crocker is listed in “Best American Essays 2013,” and was nominated for a Pushcart prize. Her warm and empathetic text will help us get to know these unusual people.  Since 2005, it has been Horan’s focus to work on long-term projects that engage and stimulate the viewer, creating a personal connection with each subject. Horan, trained as a photographer, has worked in many genres but finally found a kind of photography that unites his passion for community and its connection to the natural world.

Since February, 2012, Horan has been working on a new series of another diverse and unique ecosystem: the rapidly expanding arts scene in Lake Worth and Palm Beach County. He plans to create “environmental portraits” of the cultural scene, choosing a wide range of subjects from art patrons to bohemian street artists. The “Lake Worth Artists” project is expected to evolve over several years and will include visual artists, dancers, musicians, patrons and collectors of art.

Steve Horan tells The Rickie Report, “My goal is to engage the viewer by creating photographic series of life in North America that are contemporary and unusual. My photography captures an ambiance, whether it is Lake Worth street-painters; portraits of Yellowstone National Park people; bikers at Daytona Beach or on the ground with grassroots presidential campaign workers”.
