Suzanne Connors is a Fiber Artist in Stuart, Florida, who creates beautiful hand-dyed works of art at the Aya Fiber Studios located in the Fish House Art Center. She draws her inspiration from life in South Florida and her time spent living in the Caribbean Islands. She says that she is “enchanted by the colors of a setting sun and the Indigo blues of the sky and the sea.”

About Indigo from Aya Studios:

Indigo is an ancient dye derived from the leaves of plants and surrounded by magic, mystery and folklore. Discover how the leaves ‘make blue’ by learning about the character and chemistry of the natural indigo vat. The complex chemistry of the indigo vat is fascinating, and rituals have grown around the making and using of a successful vat. The unique ‘attaching’ of indigo to fiber means it is particularly suited to resist methods of dyeing, such as shibori, where portions of cloth are closed off to the dye or where the flow of dye is restricted. Different shades of blue build on the fabric after several dips, exhibiting the beautiful graded hues which are so typical of indigo.

The centerpiece of the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Elegant Threads: Wearable Art and Surface Design exhibition is celebrated artist, author, and advocate Mary Fisher’s magnificent textile art, on display in the Main Gallery. Launched into a career of international HIV/AIDS advocacy after giving what is widely considered one of the best American speeches of the 20th century, Fischer is also an illustrious name on the international art scene. Her work has been widely exhibited in public and private collections around the world, including the collections of President George H. W. Bush, President Gerald Ford, and President Mwanawasa of Zambia. Mary Fischer’s contemporary stylized textiles are at once elegant and evocative.

Summer is around the corner and the Lighthouse ArtCenter is ready with their 46th Annual Summer Enrichment Camp program for ages 4 through 12!  There are scholarships available, based on financial need and the applications are available now! Sign up for The Time Machine, as your children will be immersed in creativity and artistic delight.  Each themed week takes ArtCampers on a journey through a virtual Art Time Machine, exploring famous pieces of art while revealing the history, customs, art techniques and cultures of each time period. Kids will create their own masterpieces in ceramics, drawings, mixed-media, painting and sculpture. The monks are returning! The Lighthouse ArtCenter welcomes back the Sacred Art Tour from January 25-31! Eight Tibetan refugee Buddhist monks will create a sand mandala and share Tibetan traditions at the museum.  Last year, more than 1,500 visitors enjoyed the Dalai Lama-sanctioned tour in Tequesta. The mandala is created with naturally dyed sand from India; the monks painstakingly create the intricate design grain-by-grain. The Rickie Report shares the details and urges you to mark your calendars now. Throughout the week, there will be opportunities to participate in sand painting, rock painting, culinary evenings, traditional ceremonies, yoga and meditation with the monks.  Registration is required for most of the events.

Gerri Aurre will give a lecture, “Contemporary Art: Looking with Fresh Eyes and Open Minds”.  Gerri’s insights is in advance of Art Basel and will be very helpful. It’s a perfect opportunity to broaden your knowledge of the arts and mingle with other art enthusiasts and Lighthouse ArtCenter members.  All 3rd Thursday events are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free to Members, $10 Nonmembers.

 

 

 Gerri wants to offer the audience a review of Contemporary Art from the Impressionists up to the 21st century, showing that Contemporary Art all has to do with artists relating their artwork to the times. Their art expresses concepts and ideas that are current and includes what the public is involved with and thinking about. Very often the general public thinks that contemporary art is out of context and taken from left field but that is not the case, at all. All in all, the lecture will heighten the experience of people who take advantage the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s bus tour opportunities.

 

 

Gerri Aurre earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and was a career Art teacher in New York. She has traveled worldwide throughout her life. Her art is about landscape, the figure and abstraction coming from the essence of those travel experiences. Aurre is the President of the North County Artists Association.
