Kathleen Denis’ contemporary impressionistic style begins with a process in either plein air (outside) or in her studio, using mostly oils, reviewing and creating sketches and studies with many layers of paint. She starts with realism and ends in creativity, with colorful brushstrokes and energetic movement, inviting the viewer to imagine being there.

She tells The Rickie Report, “My favorite piece in this Exhibit is “Holding On To Hope”. It represents the isolation caused by society and our current pandemic during these times of unrest, yet the young lady is holding on to hope, depicted by a bright red flower. Her face is unknown and hidden in darkness so that anyone can put themselves in her shoes.

Kathleen was born in Miami, grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, and spent much time in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, which greatly influenced her use of subject matter and colorful style. Her love of art began at the age of four when taking art lessons from a fashion illustrator. After graduating from University of Miami, with a BFA degree in Graphic Design, she continued her painting skills by studying from noted master artists.

She began a lucrative career and has become one of the country’s top licensed artists! Kathleen’s art appears on hundreds of home décor and gift products including wallpaper, kitchenware, bathroom collections and much more, sold through stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, HomeGoods, and Marshals. Her art has been featured in articles in professional artist magazines and has a number of artworks have appeared in movies and tv series like Hawaii 5-O and Bloodline. Her collectors include the producers of Titanic and Avatar, as well as known political figures. “Depicting sentiment through my paintings is of great importance”, Kathleen shares. “Whether the subject matter is a timeworn cottage, a day at the beach or a sun-drenched garden, capturing the effect of light attracts me to every scene I paint. My current series of island life has been greatly influenced by growing up in South Florida, with visits to the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. with brightly painted buildings, colorful landscapes and turquoise waters. Painting chairs in many of my scenes suggests the need to take time out to rest, as I often hear, “I want to be there”.

As a faculty member at Lighthouse ArtCenter, Kathleen teaches classes and workshops there and at other art centers, in person and online. She is a member of American Impressionist Society, National Oil and Acrylic Society, Oil Painters of America and an Official United States Coast Guard Artist. In addition, Kathleen created a series called “A Scream For Silence” which uses elements in her paintings to reflect God’s Word bringing hope, restoration, and instruction to those in need.

Janis Clary (Oehlschlager) and Danuta Rothschild

Janis Clary (Oehlschlager) tells The Rickie Report, “From childhood, the difference was evident: Just as Andrew Wyeth found a certain joy, mystery, and fulfillment in the subtleties of white, black, sepia, and brown tones, I discovered COLOR – all colors and every color! In the first grade, my teacher handed me the first “big box” of crayons I had ever seen, and the picture drawn and colored used every single color in the box – including silver!”

Danuta Rothschild tells The Rickie Report, “While I am creating my art, I step into a space that allows me to connect with the Universe…to tap into the unknown. My intention is that the viewer will not only see carefully chosen colors, images, shadow and light, but will step with me into the magic of the moment…that they will feel the excitement of unplanned surprised that show up on the canvas. This is the excitement that fulfills me when I am creating.”

Janis is the last of six siblings, born in rural Greenville, SC, so competition was an everyday experience. She says, “If my siblings could do something, or even my mother, there was an absolute need to do it as well – – or better. An artistic mother served as great inspiration for everything art – color, music, style, performance, writing poetry and, finally, drawing and painting! Serious studies began in my early twenties with private lessons from a highly educated German born artist who taught me the techniques of the Old Masters”.

Danuta Rothschild is an internationally known, respected award winning artist. She was a Featured Artist at the most recent Palm Beach Art Show at the Palm Beach Convention Center (February,2021), and her works are included in “Celebrating 40 Years of Arts4All Florida”, a rigorously juried exhibition being shown at the Florida Capitol 22nd Floor Gallery in Tallahassee now through March 26, 2021. A native of Poland, she has lived in California and is now located in Stuart, FL. Danuta’s works have been shown in prestigious museums in Poland, France, Bosnia, and the United States, where she participated in numerous exhibits in CA. Having appeared in TV shows world wide, she has become an established artist with much respect. Danuta’s artworks are in public and private collections throughout the world.

In the early 1980’s, Janis discovered a deep passion for painting wildlife. She continues, “This focus allowed me to assign life to each piece through the eyes of my subjects – the window to the very soul within the subject! I come to each canvas open-minded and ready to create the space with wonder and life. There is a freedom in the flow of paints filling the canvas with the colors of life. It is my world, my longing to be within the depths of losing myself in the process of bringing my subjects to life. My art takes the viewer on the journey through my eyes, seeing that spark that assigns life, captures its very soul, and explores the mood of the environment”.

Janis’ works drew the attention of collectors and galleries as she participated in exhibitions in Central Florida. She says, “In 2010, my life changed as I moved to South Carolina and became involved in the world of art there, participating in classes well as private sessions in Pawleys Island, SC and Georgetown, SC where I participated in many shows at the Georgetown Cultural Council. I was featured in a Solo exhibition in Georgetown. My works are on exhibit in private and corporate collections, both in the United States and internationally. My medium of choice is oil painting, though acrylic is now gaining momentum”.

The scope of Danuta’s artistry is diverse and provocative, as they weave an historical tapestry, including her own take on the Masters. An artist of considerable stature, Danuta created several series of paintings covering a wide range of subjects. In her “Art About Art” series, she portrays her favorite painters (Cezanne, Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Modigliani) combining portraits with elements of their well-known works. Half homage, half subtle mischief, these whimsical paintings reveal more about Danuta to the viewer.

Danuta’s art provides a sense of social commentary about relevant issues, both spiritual and profound. It is rare to see the intensity of emotion, scope of subject matter, and true understanding of the human psyche and spirit as she sees it. Danuta can take soul-wrenching subjects and make them palatable and magical, while allowing us to ask the pertinent questions that moves us to go deeper within ourselves, revealing new understandings.

Fran Goodman teaches “Not Your Ordinary Painting Class” where she blends art history with contemporary applications in Abstract Expressionism. A fractured hand hasn’t stopped her from painting and sharing her unique methods with her students! Now, everyone can explore the lives of famous abstract expressionists and analyze their paintings from a color/design point of view! Students (who come from different parts of the world) channel what they’ve learned into their own paintings that they create at home, and then bring back each week for group critique. Each class is for an hour and a half in 4-week sessions. The students say they love the classes not only from what they learn, but from the camaraderie that’s developed among them! Fran tells The Rickie Report, “Every week, I introduce a different abstract expressionist, usually from the 40’s and 50’s. I share their stories and their struggles — many whose paintings today sell for hundreds of millions were as poor as paupers. Then the students and I analyze their paintings for composition, color (especially values) and design”.

As a weekly assignment, the students are to “channel” these artists’ styles into their own paintings which they do at home, using various layering techniques and unique applicators and tools. The following week, the students return to show case their paintings in a group critique.

Fran has been a student in Larry Poons master class at the Art Student League. She abides by his approach that there are no goals in abstract expressionist painting. “One stroke leads to the next.” She encourages her students to watch the movie he is in on HBO called, “The Price of Everything,”

Fran’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries in New Jersey, the Chelsea district of Manhattan and Southern Florida, and are in private collection in New York, Florida, Toronto, and Hollywood, CA. Fran is a Signature Artist of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, a member of the Art Students League in NY, Art Serve, the National Association of Women Artists, and, the Delray Art League, where she is the Arts Education Fund Chair.

She teaches “Not Your Ordinary Painting Class” where she blends art history with contemporary applications in Abstract Expressionism in various locations in Palm Beach County. Her classes have been featured in two cover stories which can be found on her website. Fran currently runs a virtual class on her craft for the Institute for Learning in Retirement in Boca Raton. She invites opportunities to do commissions, lectures, demos and private lessons as well.

“During my life I have created projects, seminars, support groups and trainings in the United States and Canada to inspire growth and self-esteem. Whether it was through my business as spokeswoman for women’s beauty rights, or through Toastmasters as a mentor to many, or as an art educator; whether I was addressing men, women or teens of all ages and all walks of life, I looked for their potential and then empowered them to be their best selves. To me, there is no greater reward than witnessing people flower and bloom.” Fran’s Artist statement tells us, “I approach the canvas with a desire to fuse color with texture, free of intention, tradition and norms. I count on layering properties to burn a life force into even the smallest structures. My strokes, some obscure, some undefined, personify difference and sameness and how the two natures work in concert with one another.”

Judy Burgarella spends a lot of time designing her class so that people will not fail. When they sign up, she sends them a lined pattern, and in class she shows them how to get that pattern onto the canvas. She explains, “This is not a drawing class, it’s a painting class. Drawing takes years to learn. Even if some of them do not have a “masterpiece,” they will have learned a lot of tips and tricks to add to their knowledge of painting”. Many of her students have said that they have learned more in her class than any other class they have taken. “For 3 hours, I never shut up. I am hoping to get many other artists onboard to teach this class so that we have diversity and variety to offer”.

Judy Burgarella tells The Rickie Report, “My career in business involved mostly administration/ secretarial work, and printing and editing. As my passion to pursue art became stronger I began writing and designing for arts & crafts magazines, in addition to running my own secretarial service. I eventually started an art club, the “Shoreline Plein Air Painters” in Connecticut”.

In 2005, Judy and her husband Bob moved to Florida, and she soon joined the Vero Beach Art Club and other local arts organizations, where she became very active, helping out with shows and wherever her skills were needed. In 2012 her daughter Robin and family moved to Sebastian, and Judy currently helps her with her real estate business staging homes and using her own paintings in the décor.

Judy has studied under renowned artists in Connecticut and Florida, and has taught painting and drawing for over 20 years. She currently teaches portrait painting at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, general art at Indian River Estates, and does free-lance classes and demonstrations for groups and individuals. Judy is constantly on the lookout for new creative opportunities, and ways to give back to the community.

The Hobe Sound Fine Arts League, previously known as The Art League of Hobe Sound, was formed on January 23, 1984 with the following members: Dolores Alchermes Zapatelli, Rosalie Becht, Charlotte Denniston, Evelyn Gaio, Margaret Matlock, and Jean Seewald. The League held their meetings in the St. Christopher’s Parish hall.

The decision to incorporate was made in November 1985. From the beginning, a professional artist gave the League members a monthly demonstration in the artist specialty.

The original Gallery space was obtained in April of 1987, and opened publicly the following September. This provided the members with a place to exhibit there art. At the same, time, the art instruction program was instituted and classes in various art media were opened to members as well as the general public. Our new Gallery space was obtained in 1996.

Mission Statement:

To enhance the knowledge, creativity, and skills of local artists through classes, workshops, and demonstrations.
To promote art through monthly Artist of the Month shows, outdoor art fairs, exhibits in community locales, and participation in community events.
To support young artists through special funding/scholarships and youth programs..

The membership is made up of amateur and professional artists as well as those who appreciate art and support the League’s endeavors.

The library serves over 760,000 people each year, providing our children, teens, and adults endless opportunities for learning, growth, enrichment, inspiration, entertainment and so much more.

The Library Foundation’s mission is to raise funds for the Library to provide the free quality programs, services and resources that enrich and strengthen our diverse community. A great public library depends on a partnership between private philanthropy and public funding from the City. Because of our generous donors, we have a gem in our community that serves as a center for learning, inspiration and creativity.

To express our appreciation, I am excited to share that we have launched the WPB Library Foundation Giving Society to recognize our supporters, who contribute a minimum of $1,000 annually to the Library Foundation. Our first Giving Society event will be on March 11 with celebrated columnist and author, Leslie Streeter.

Programs We Fund:

From providing technological support, to highlighting different cultures, to a vast array of programs and services, the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach presents many new, unique, and interesting events that are free to the public – but, of course, not really free for the Library. For example, the West Palm Beach Library Foundation has supported programs and utilities such as:

Baby and toddler yoga classes
Equipment, so computers are fully accessible for children
Teen Mentoring and Support for high-risk teens
Get that Job Programs, preparing youth and adults for the working world
GED Programs so individuals obtain high school diplomas
Children and Teen Homework help Centers with certified teachers

For the child inspired to read on her own after attending story time … the student who needs high-tech computer access to complete his homework assignments … the new resident seeking connections in the community … the job hunter preparing for an interview … the small business owner researching marketing techniques … or the senior who masters sending emails so they can stay in contact with friends and family across the country … the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is here to serve the entire community.

Arts411 at Mandel Public Library

The After School Elementary Homework Center helps children excel in all academic programs. Located in the heart of the Children’s Library, the center’s certified teachers use creative and interactive teaching methods to assist children.

The Teen Homework Center on the second floor in the teen section of the Library provides high-risk teens with a safe environment where they receive academic support. They have the opportunity to meet with other teens to work on projects in the arts, sciences, and math. The Library becomes a place where teens receive help with academics while developing and building life skills.

Science Projects 101 helps low-income children achieve gains in scientific literacy. Since many children lack support at home to complete science projects. During two-hour sessions, students and parents learn about the scientific method and receive kits which include materials needed to complete their science projects. Pre- and post-survey results have shown that children who participate in the program substantially improve their science knowledge and grades in school.

Children’s Summer Academy minimizes or reverses “Summer Slide” for low income children. This six-week program provides a safe, accessible learning environment which enables children to maintain and build their skills in reading, writing, science, and math. Breakfast and lunch are provided as incentives to attend the programs and to provide the energy needed to fully engage in the learning process.

The Summer Reading Program for preschool- and elementary-age children. This program encourages these children to complete reading logs, which track the number of books they read. Every week, children receive books to help them build their home libraries. Books selected by the children have included Caps for Sale, A Pocket for Corduroy, Flat Stanley, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Magic Tree House series, Bad Kitty, Captain Underpants, Charlotte’s Web, and James and the Giant Peach.

Early Literacy Bilingual Computer Stations in our KidSpace strengthen the skills of preschoolers to promote school-readiness. These computer stations enable the Library to expand its outreach to young children who have limited or no access to computers at home and at school. At the Mandel Public Library, the Early Literacy Computer Stations increase the Library’s ability to meet school-readiness goals for both English and non-English speakers.

Dog Tales provides reluctant readers with opportunities to read aloud to trained therapy dogs that listen to these young readers so they can develop a love of reading and improve their reading comprehension. With dogs present six days a week during the school year and three days a week during the summer, Dog Tales has become a treasured program. The Library ensures that new Library Edition books are available for the children who participate in the program.

Let’s Read is a volunteer-based literacy program that improves the reading skills of children. Annually, forty volunteers trained in the art of reading aloud bring story times to 1,800 students in four academically struggling schools. This results in children developing stronger reading skills and a love for books. Children in the program receive gift books to build their home libraries. Children served through this program begin to develop a lifelong relationship with the value of the printed word and begin to see reading as an enjoyable experience.

Teen Mentoring builds self-esteem and provides teens with the confidence and motivation they need to be successful in life. Teens come to the Library and discover a safe haven where they will receive homework help, get advice on life’s challenges, make friends who have similar interests, and receive assistance with job readiness, GED, and college preparedness. At-risk teens acquire the skills needed to become outstanding, responsible citizens. A variety of activities designed with their needs in mind, such as lectures, arts and crafts, poetry slams, and group technology projects, help them develop a more positive outlook on the future.

Young Adult to Senior Adult programs abound at the Library as recreational, educational, and cultural settings. The Library provides free skill-building, physically engaging, and diverse life experiences which are not found anywhere else. Tango, swing dance, yoga, and Pilates are just a handful of the classes offered at the Library. Imaginations soar and educational opportunities thrive for tens of thousands of people every week.

Job Readiness Programs, underemployed, and unemployed young people and adults eager to find work and/or full-time positions take place through out the year. Due to their lack of computer and job readiness skills, adults receive assistance in preparing resumes, writing cover letters, preparing for interviews, gaining computer program knowledge, and improving writing skills.

Studio 411 Art Classes and Lectures is a comprehensive studio space for the library’s popular range of arts programs, where artistic adults can create, explore, and learn about a variety of arts and crafts from painting, drawing and sculpture to crocheting, soap-making and even jewelry-making…with all supplies included! This studio provides so many adults in our community an outlet to be creative, develop their talents, and learn from local artists.

VICKI SIEGEL

Vicki Siegel’s work combines painting and photography together. She creates images that unite her fascination with the world around her with the physicality of paint. Blending the two art forms is a process that results in images that are both real and imaginary. The photographers gaze allows her to observe and archive reality, while the paint flows from her subconscious to her brush in marks that are uniquely her own. Siegel says, “In my work I ask the viewer to engage by comparing what is photographic and what is paint, but also what is personal and what is universal”.
