Fran Goodman Offers “Not Your Ordinary Painting Class” On Zoom On Tuesdays And Thursdays For Learning And Meeting Other Artists From Around The World

Fran Goodman teaches “Not Your Ordinary Painting Class” where she blends art history with contemporary applications in Abstract ExpressionismA fractured hand hasn’t stopped her from painting and sharing her unique methods with her students!  Now, everyone can explore the lives of famous abstract expressionists and analyze their paintings from a color/design point of view! Students (who come from different parts of the world) channel what they’ve learned into their own paintings that they create at home, and then bring back each week for group critique. Each class is for an hour and a half in 4-week sessions.  The students say they love the classes not only from what they learn, but from the camaraderie that’s developed among them!  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks of Fran’s and her students’ artwork.

Fran tells The Rickie Report, “Every week, I introduce a different abstract expressionist, usually from the 40’s and 50’s. I share their stories and their struggles — many whose paintings today sell for hundreds of millions were as poor as paupers. Then the students and I analyze their paintings for composition, color (especially values) and design”.

As a weekly assignment, the students are to “channel” these artists’ styles into their own paintings which they do at home, using various layering techniques and unique applicators and tools. The following week, the students return to show case their paintings in a group critique.

Fran has been a student in Larry Poons master class at the Art Student League. She abides by his approach that there are no goals in abstract expressionist painting. “One stroke leads to the next.” She encourages her students to watch the movie he is in on HBO called, “The Price of Everything,”

She tells us more about her classes, saying “Every week, I introduce a different abstract expressionist, usually from the 40’s and 50’s.  I share their stories and their struggles — many whose paintings today sell for hundreds of millions were as poor as paupers. Then the students and I analyze their paintings for composition, color (especially values) and design”.

Fran’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries in New Jersey, the Chelsea district of Manhattan and Southern Florida, and are in private collection in New York, Florida, Toronto, and Hollywood, CA.  Fran is a Signature Artist of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, a member of the Art Students League in NY, Art Serve, the National Association of Women Artists, and, the Delray Art League, where she is the Arts Education Fund Chair.

She teaches “Not Your Ordinary Painting Class” where she blends art history with contemporary applications in Abstract Expressionism in various locations in Palm Beach County. Her classes have been featured in two cover stories which can be found on her website. Fran currently runs a virtual class on her craft for the Institute for Learning in Retirement in Boca Raton. She invites opportunities to do commissions, lectures, demos and private lessons as well.

“During my life I have created projects, seminars, support groups and trainings in the United States and Canada to inspire growth and self-esteem. Whether it was through my business as spokeswoman for women’s beauty rights, or through Toastmasters as a mentor to many, or as an art educator; whether I was addressing men, women or teens of all ages and all walks of life, I looked for their potential and then empowered them to be their best selves. To me, there is no greater reward than witnessing people flower and bloom.”  Fran’s Artist statement tells us, “I approach the canvas with a desire to fuse color with texture, free of intention, tradition and norms. I count on layering properties to burn a life force into even the smallest structures. My strokes, some obscure, some undefined, personify difference and sameness and how the two natures work in concert with one another.”

Judy Burgarella spends a lot of time designing her class so that people will not fail.  When they sign up, she sends them a lined pattern, and in class she shows them how to get that pattern onto the canvas.  She explains, “This is not a drawing class, it’s a painting class. Drawing takes years to learn.  Even if some of them do not have a “masterpiece,” they will have learned a lot of tips and tricks to add to their knowledge of painting”.  Many of her students have said that they have learned more in her class than any other class they have taken.  “For 3 hours, I never shut up.  I am hoping to get many other artists onboard to teach this class so that we have diversity and variety to offer”.

Vicki Siegel is a full time working artist who exhibits extensively. Her work can be found in private collections.  She has a BFA from the University of Illinois and studied MFA coursework at Tyler School of Art, Rome. Siegel is a Golden Artist Educator.  Vicki Siegel’s work combines painting and photography together.  She creates images that unite her fascination with the world around her with the physicality of paint. The photographers gaze allows her to observe and archive reality, while the paint flows from her subconscious to her brush in marks that are uniquely her own. Siegel says, “In my work I ask the viewer to engage by comparing what is photographic and what is paint, but also what is personal and what is universal”.

Haydee tells The Rickie Report, “My style of teaching is to encourage confidence, self-expression and individuality while adventuring into the basics of art and developing the student’s power of observation and decision making.  Classes are kept small offering more individual attention to each student. Along with relaxing and having fun, creating a beautiful painting will increase confidence and self-esteem as well as the freedom to think flexibly and solve problems. This is especially important for the healthy development of any child as well as a stress release for any adult”. Inside the studio itself the depth of her talent is evident in her work exhibited on the walls; expressions of her powerful artistic statement reflecting her unique vision. Some classes, weather permitting, will be taught outside in the garden.

 Fine Artist, Haydee Ullfig

Haydee emigrated with her family from Argentina to Chicago as a young child. While in primary school she already showed a strong natural aptitude for art. Haydee continued studying art through High School in Chicago, IL and was awarded a scholarship for classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. She graduated with a major in Fine Arts in 1972 from William Rainey Harper College, Palatine, IL.  Her subsequent degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami, has strengthened her entrepreneurial spirit. Her creativity, versatility and professionalism is reflected not only through her fine art paintings, but in various projects such as children’s book illustrations, commissioned art for interior designers, commissioned portraits and murals.

HAYDEE’S VISION: TEACHING OUR CHILDREN CREATIVITY FOR A BETTER WORLD

If you can imagine it, You can achieve it. If you can achieve it, You can become it. –  William Arthur Ward

Haydee says, “Teaching children art, or more specifically creativity, is not only for teaching them to become our future fine artists. Teaching children creativity means teaching them observation and divergent thinking.  Divergent thinking is a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions.  With divergent thinking children learn to go beyond the mundane towards originality, inventiveness, inside-out thinking, resourcefulness and productivity”.

She continues, “Our world needs these future creative visionaries…..and who knows….they may become the next “Einstein or Jane Goodall” that will save our environment”.  Will they become the next researchers that will allow us to continue living quality and healthy lives in this wonderful world?  They may become our future artists who will l sustain our hope in the future, enhance our world with beauty, and keep our eyes open so that we may conscious of our actions”.

“Claire De Lune” by Haydee Ullfig

Haydee’s commitment to give back to the community is  exemplified by her volunteerism creating art for various benefits and non-profit events throughout Palm Beach County, including the Hobe Sound Mural Project, Art in the Alley, and a large mural at Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Wellington, FL, to name a few. Her extensive travels throughout Europe and South America, visiting cultural and artistic centers, her keen observation of the world around her, her love of children, animals and nature, as well as her capacity to see “outside the box” continue to enhance her creative development.  She considers herself an “artist in transition” with her best work still to be created.

Painting

Probably the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of fine arts, painting is a wonderful gateway into the expansive world of art.  We offer lessons in acrylic, watercolor, gouache and mixed media. Our lessons focus on color mixing, brush technique, composition and theory, but we make sure to emphasize in self-expression.

Drawing

If you want to start with a basis before starting painting, drawing fundamentals including observational drawing is what you need.  Who knows, you may just decide to focus only on drawing which is an art in itself.   Our lessons emphasize on seeing, using right-brain techniques, line contours, shading and perspective. Lessons available in a wide array of drawing materials; learn to draw in charcoal, pencil (graphite and colored), pastels, oil pastels, pen and ink.

Other Creative Expressions

Other media specific classes may be added to our schedule, such as mosaics and sculpture and these will be posted on our website.
