“Climate” Oil Painting by Genie Appel-Cohen

Genie Appel-Cohen tells The Rickie Report, “There are many great artists, and many great teachers; but to be an art teacher, a good one, requires skills not taught in any school.  There is no one more vulnerable or brave than a new art student.  They come to me, full of hope and yearning, and I take that responsibility very seriously.  Each person is precious. I need to learn just who they are, how best to teach them, and to support them completely, (every step of the way); on this wonderful journey, we call art.  That for me, is a mission and the blessing of my life”.  When you view some of the artworks by her students, you will see how this nurturing focus brings out the best in them! Due to the Pandemic, and at the urging of her students, Genie has created an unusually successful Zoom platform for artists in all 2 dimensional mediums.

Student artworks Left to Right: Marla Friedman, Fran Fran Starkman

Genie tells us, “Each painting is a story where the artist invites the viewer to become part of their inner world.  My work is an invitation to engage you in a conversation.  I use paint, or pencil to reveal hidden meaning; not just in my life, but in yours as well.  I usually work in a series so I can explore one idea, but in different ways.   My hope is that I can make a connection, and that you might say, “Oh yes, I see”, or,   “Yes, I felt that, too.” This might be one small part of our mutual humanity; but for me, it is everything”.

Student artworks Left to Right: Linda Solomon, Judith Rostenne

The Boca Raton Museum Art School pursues numerous formal and informal structured activities intended to inspire and train the community in various traditional and experimental creative media techniques. Through the art of teaching, critique, demonstration, and discussion groups large and small, our faculty and students explore what creativity means through guided projects in various studio environments.

It is the school’s direct intention to inspire and expand the practice of creative artistic expression among all age groups and abilities in a multi-disciplinary environment supported and enriched by artistic influences both local and global in reach. Through classroom, gallery, and social activities, the school emphasizes the benefits of studio thinking to inspire our patrons to improve their lives and communities both aesthetically and through the creative thought process.

WHAT’S    NEW    AT    THE    ART    SCHOOL?

Tom Joule eagerly shares the latest news with The Rickie Report about the Art School.  “We announce our September classes and now you may reserve your seat online by using our  “touchless” registration process. Select classes that you are interested in (Painting, Ceramics, etc.), then the specific session you are interested in by clicking the red “register” button beneath the course days and times”.

“Only our September classes are available at this time, as we test our new system live (and welcome all feedback from you as you navigate our new website).  New courses for October and beyond will be added shortly, so stay tuned!  Strict reduced enrollment requirements are being implemented so you may properly distance while in class as well as requiring anyone who enters the building to wear a mask at all times for your own safety and to protect those around you”.

WHAT    IS    REALLY   IMPORTANT?

Tom goes on to say, “It is during times of crisis that it becomes much easier to recognize and prioritize what is most important in our lives. We can see quite clearly that the Art School without students and teachers and classes is simply an empty building. Reserving a spot in an Art class today is the best way that you can become reinvigorated by the community and friends that you have come to love over so many wonderful years and ensure creative and rewarding learning opportunities for new faces and future generations”.

Sogetsu Ikebana is for everyone everywhere. Is is the art of flower arrangement, rooted in tradition, but ever-changing. The Japanese characters of the Sogetsu School (Ryu) represent grass, moon, and stream. Grass grows everywhere, the moon is seen by everyone, a stream is always moving. The art form is a product of skill and creativity using flowers, branches and either conventional or unconventional materials in order to express the beauty and harmony of nature and the imagination and creativity of the designer.

Judy Burgarella spends a lot of time designing her class so that people will not fail.  When they sign up, she sends them a lined pattern, and in class she shows them how to get that pattern onto the canvas.  She explains, “This is not a drawing class, it’s a painting class. Drawing takes years to learn.  Even if some of them do not have a “masterpiece,” they will have learned a lot of tips and tricks to add to their knowledge of painting”.  Many of her students have said that they have learned more in her class than any other class they have taken.  “For 3 hours, I never shut up.  I am hoping to get many other artists onboard to teach this class so that we have diversity and variety to offer”.

Drive down Flavor Pict Road in Boynton Beach through what was tomato farm territory (that’s what the name of the road alludes to), and you will find members of Paul Cummings’ Sculpture Group covered in dust as they create wood and stone sculptures.  From 8 – 11 am Mondays through Thursdays, you can access a large library for inspiration or answers, stones to choose from, and all the machinery you will need.

Paul tells The Rickie Report, “I have been creating 3-dimensional objects from my early days in wood. After I moved to Florida in 1972, I started taking stone carving classes in Boca.  After a class or two the regular instructor quit and they asked me to take over.  I did that for several years”.

Sculptures by Paul Cummings

When Paul moved to west Boynton Beach on 10 acres of land,  it got to be a real trip to go to Boca and the two classes I was doing. So, I began classes in an outdoor studio and offered it by word of mouth to various people and it just expanded. The county  bought the property from me and I had to find new studio space, so a friend offered me a garage-type building in south Boynton where I am currently teaching”.

Paul’s sculptures reside in private collections around the United States, Europe, and Central America.  He has exhibited and won awards and currently exhibits at the Green Cay Nature Center in Boynton Beach. A 22 year veteran of the Air Force, Paul had a wide variety of tasks, depending on his rank (starting as a private and ending as a major).  He recently went on the veterans Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Paul received degrees from University of Maryland and George Washington University.  His artistry has been published in “Sculpture in Stone”.
