The Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Artists (CHF) is excited to announce its Art-Business Conference in Fort Lauderdale, an event that seeks to inspire visual artists to “Conquer the Changing Marketplace.” This weekend-long business-development workshop will give professional working artists the chance to take a deep dive into the business side of their art careers. Scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2019, the event is funded in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners through the Broward Cultural Council. The two-day conference is co-sponsored by ArtServe, an active incubator for Broward County’s growing art community. What Is CERF+? How Can Its Resources Help You Before And After A Disaster? Here Is CERF+ A Safety Net for Artists’ Emergencies

What happens when a disaster strikes?  We see images and hear stories of people who have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones.  We rarely see coverage of artists who have lost their studios, galleries, and income.  Today, Caren Hackman reports about CERF+, which comes to the aid of those creatives who need immediate relief.  When it was discovered that there was virtually no safety net for artists and their work, the Craft Emergency Relief Fund was established.  The Rickie Report shares the resources that CERF+ offers!  We hope that this article is just the beginning of a conversation with artists, galleries and other arts-related organizations.  How can each be involved, in a small, but powerful way?  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Artists are one group that misses all the attention when disaster strikes. It may be fire, a hurricane, a flood, or an earthquake.

 

 

Unless a museum is involved, no one seems to notice that great artworks are lost without compensation to the maker.

 

At last there is a resource with CERF+, a very unique organization that has come to the rescue of artists as a kind of safety net for their fragile careers. They know there is no way to recover from major damage to supplies and inventory.

 

When the events of life become oppressive, there is someone to help. 

 

 

 

 

As such, CERF+ advocates preparedness so that artists of all types are ready before an unforeseen event arrives. This could be a health crisis such as a personal illness or debility. Their website, CERFplus.org (https://cerfplus.org), is devoted to preserving careers through “Studio Protector” and the “Wellness for Makers” programs. Much is loaded into the comprehensive site so that artists and craftspeople can get information on grant writing, health insurance, disaster preparedness and more. New or long-term creatives can find advice on a variety of relevant topics.

 

 

A few of the artists who have been helped by CERF+

 

 

Director of Programs and Outreach, Jennifer Simon, describes the organization’s philosophy as “everything that can help the artist enjoy a sustainable and resilient career. We attempt not to duplicate information already available to artists from other worthy organizations; instead, we try to focus on ‘filling the gaps.’” She points out that the new website is actually a merging of two previous ones: CERF and Studio Protector. The result is a guide to emergency relief assistance and recovery. 

 

 

 

 

It all came about when it was discovered that there was virtually no safety net for artists and their work. Carol Sedestrom Ross, President of American Craft Enterprises in 1985 and glassblower, Josh Simpson, joined forces in the mid 80’s to establish the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. It was based on the known generosity of artists to help their community when in trouble. They formalized the former “pass the hat” tradition to an organized donation system. Lacking a website, of course, they depended on people passing through exhibitions and shows.   

 

 

 

Artists are notoriously loyal and before long, the fund grew along with the organization. They felt that “needs to be a greater presence of artists at the table when it comes to emergency assistance in general.” Artists and musicians of all callings periodically face times of dire need. And so the National Coalition for Arts Preparedness and Emergency Response was born whose members included the Actors Fund, Music Cares, South Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. It is a tight knit group that is in constant communication to share ideas on resources and communal activities. 

 

 

 

 

Jenifer brings me up to date on the contemporary version of CERF+. “Our goal is to not only motivate artists to look at the website, but to implement some of the recommendations.” The organization likes to show different ways that artists can talk about sustaining resilient careers. Some are beneficiaries of $500 Get Ready Grants that enable artists to practice preparedness to mitigate disaster. She explains that “preparing for disasters is not an attractive topic for most artists, many of whom are focused on more immediate concerns such as earning a living, finding health insurance, and getting jobs. It is a challenge to get “preparedness” on an artist’s radar.” 

 

 

 

 

The site is apparently a work in process and is becoming more personalized and easy to navigate with tabs like “Studio Protector” and “Plan Ahead”. Artists are asked to focus on what they can ill afford to lose in a disaster. An explainer video helps visitors with its step-by-step approach to recovery including documenting artwork and avoiding health hazards. Jenifer Simon recounts a time when she had stored prints in her parents’ basement. After it flooded, the artwork was water logged. An article on CERF+ instructed her on damage control by placing the artwork in the freezer to reduce mold. 

 

 

 

Practical advice and vital information on topics often neglected by artists such as insurance populate the valuable website pages. Artists seldom stop their creative sessions to think about risk reduction and safety. They are also taught how to value their work in terms of cost of materials so that they understand their true profit after sales. With people like Jenifer at the helm, CERF+ has incredible reach and import. It is a wonderful mutual aid society that relies on consistent donations. In actuality, 62% of the donations come from artists; the rest is from grants! 

 

 

 

 

CERF+ has a clear future in coming to the aid of those who need immediate relief. The Federal budget does not include art supplies and musical instruments. With their thoughtful foresight, the founders of this worthy organization have created a legacy that will sustain artists well into the future to ensure the longevity of creative endeavor.    Jenifer Simon is currently working as CERF+’s Outreach Coordinator. How Online Art Galleries Can Help You Market Your Artwork

In the last 5 years online art galleries have become a popular means for artists to market and sell their art. If an artist is not taking advantage of this platform they are at a very distinct disadvantage in terms of marketing and selling their art. There are several types of online galleries and using them has numerous benefits for the artist.

 

Print on Demand Online Art Galleries:

These type of galleries provide a profile page followed by gallery pages for the artist’s artworks. (They may or may not charge an administrative fee). The gallery acts as a “go between” for the buyer and the artist. They print and ship the artist’s work for the purchaser, which is how the gallery makes their money.

 

Online Art Galleries that Market and Sell Art:

This type of gallery sells the artist’s art and collects a percentage of each sale (much like a brick and mortar gallery when they sell an artist’s artwork). They usually provide the artist with a profile, a storefront and the means to charge and collect from the buyer.

As “Season” Slows Down, What Happens To Our Local “Art Scene”? Hint: It Doesn’t Stop!

Less traffic on the road and less waiting for dining reservations is a sure sign that “season” is winding down. What happens to the “art scene”, which has had you trying to find a way to see three opening receptions on the same date for the past few months?  This Rickie Report article looks at the situation and shares some thoughts for artists AND art lovers!

 

 

 

“The Art Scene” After “Season”

As “Season” slows down:

  • Artists continue to create

  • Galleries still exhibit

  • Arts organizations continue to program

  • Museums remain open

  • Classes To Learn Art Techniques are being taught 

  • Original Art and Handmade Fine Crafts Are Still Available!

 

A Word To Art Lovers and Art Patrons:

 

Stop by galleries and art exhibits in “off season”.

They’ll be less crowded with visitors – and you’ll have a chance to linger!

This is a terrific time to hone your own art skills, learn a new technique or make a creative play date with friends!

Check The Rickie Report and search for “classes”, “workshops”, “meet the artists” and remember to look at our interactive Calendar of Events!  If you see something that interests you, click on the event. You’ll be brought to the original article for all of the details.  

We might not be publishing daily, but we still have the information you need to stay active in the art scene!

 

Sharing Some Thoughts With Artists:

 

NOW is a good time for artists who have been scurrying to meet too many overlapping deadlines for the past six months to organize themselves!

Calls For Entries To Artists continue to appear and now is the time to prepare for the annual events for next “season” 

 

Business Cards:  

It is time to revisit the wording, font size or photos on them.

Do you have enough cards to get you through the next 12 months? (NO ONE wants to run out in the middle of their busy time…Do it now)!

I make notes on business card ( galleries, exhibits, or organizations I’ll recommend the artist connect with; what is exceptional about their artwork)…

So, consider this before choosing shiny paper and having too many words/photos on your business cards.

 

Artwork:

Staying organized is one of the hardest parts of returning to your studio after an exhibit or show and putting everything away.

Staying organized for the next event is KEY!

Check your written files to make sure they are up to date.

Mark pieces “SOLD” from your inventory (it makes paying taxes easier for next year).

Is a piece of artwork missing?  Find it now, before the exhibitor or gallery takes possession of it.  (Read the fine print whenever you enter to see what their policy is for work that is left)

 

Wear And Tear:

Bringing artwork of any kind to exhibits, shows, and galleries produces wear and tear.
Check all frames for nicks and marks that need repair.
Check mats and glass to be sure everything is in proper position and in good condition.
Check all hanging devices.

Inventory:

Update your inventory list.

Take a moment for a mental inventory.

Are you happy with what you are creating?

Is it time to try a new technique that you just haven’t had time for?

Now is a perfect time to take a short-term class or workshop!

Schedule some networking time with other artists.

Talk about how this “season” has been for you. Sharing insights can be helpful, if you don’t get into a round of grousing. If something didn’t “work”, now you have time to reflect on what you can control – how can you react and plan differently?

 

Outline your business goals – YES! If you are selling your artwork, you are “in business”!

Look at a 2018 Calendar:

Start by marking the dates of all exhibit and show deadlines you are applying to in RED.

NOW: Mark the dates of those acceptance announcements and drop offs in BLUE.

The Rickie Report is already booking dates through December, 2017, so don’t hesitate to contact us!
You may not have all of the details, but we can save you a spot in the publication queue.
To get your article published, let us know 3-6 weeks before the Exhibition or Opening Reception.
Last minute openings are possible, but please do not plan on that, especially during “season”.
Giving us 6 weeks advance notice in “season” gives you more opportunities to choose a timely date for your publication.

An article includes: Who (you/art organization), What (Type of Event), When ( Dates of exhibit and specific dates and time of Receptions, including Hours of Operation), Where (Street address, contact name and phone number to ask more questions), Why ( if this is a fundraiser or for a charity, we will highlight the organization and include their website and social media addresses). Also: 5 jpegs, artist statement, brief bio, website address, social media addresses and anything else you want our readers to know about your artwork and creative process.

 

It is FREE to subscribe to The Rickie Report.

We will bill you for articles. There is no word maximum. Call for current rates.
Invest in your art business and take a monthly ad. With 3 rotations of jpegs (change them out at no charge monthly), you bring more readers (art lovers and art patrons, gallerists, museum personnel, show directors world wide) to your website. “Artist As Entrepreneur Institute” Offers Informational Meeting At Armory Art Center In Palm Beach County

In addition to The Broward County Cultural Division‘s grant making activities, they design and convene training programs and workshops for our area’s cultural not-for-profit organizations and local artists: including visual artists, musical arts, composers, media, theater art, and performing arts.   The Rickie Report shares the details and reminds artists that to succeed, you must have business plan!   To date, more than 680 South Florida artists have graduated from the Institute.  An informational session takes place at the Armory Art Center on Monday, April 10th in the evening.  This is an opportunity for artists to learn more about the upcoming Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) and the various services the Broward Cultural Division offers to artists in the region, including funding, professional development and networking opportunities. Broward Cultural Division is a local arts agency, one of thousands across the U.S. providing financial, technical and marketing assistance to artists and arts organizations.  Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) is a course of study designed to assist individual artists, of all disciplines (visual, musicians, writers, media, theater, performing arts), by cultivating and advancing their business skills, and helping them to strengthen their operating infrastructure and expand their business. 

 

 

AEI will be presented from 9 AM – 6 PM on June 3, 10 & 17 and the Business Plan Clinic and Workshop on June 24th, 9 AM – 2 PM., and will offer a curriculum of 20 different class modules over the four Saturdays. The program will be presented at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The program is designed to help the artist community better understand their enterprise and markets, and strengthen the vitality of the larger urban arts and culture sector.

A Word To Artists, Arts Organizations And Show Promoters From The Rickie Report

Every article The Rickie Report publishes is packed with information.  Sometimes, we announce an art event that holds interest for art patrons and artists, a Call For Art to a juried show or exhibit, or an overview of an artist’s work and classes being offered in the community.  On Friday, May 20th we published an article about the Fort Lauderdale Design and Remodeling Show.  In today’s “tutorial”, we take a closer look at how artists, arts organizations and show promoters can use this article to find new opportunities.

· “Surroundings” by Lynda Sauls, Steve Romero and Patricia Beltran of the Weston Art Guild aims to stimulate and provoke awareness of South Florida’s treasures. The artists invite the viewer to slow down and appreciate the artists’ reverence for the ordinary, overlooked, and awesome skies. Apart from their work as artists, Sauls serves as President of the Weston Art Guild; Romero aims to highlight the beauty of South Florida in his photographs; and Beltran offers art workshops for children at her studio.

· “Abstractive Fusion” by Yvette Michele Booth and Shernett Muhammad, addresses the melting together of ideas and elements from nature, expressions of bold color and life experiences. Booth is an arts journalist and blogs weekly in support of a cure of Aids and HIV, using art as a means to create awareness. This is Muhammad’s second time participating in “At Home with Art.” Muhammad’s art reflects her dedication to capturing Florida’s natural environment.

· “Delirium” by Miami artists, Aida Tejada, Josepo and Sandra Garcia-Pardo shows the consequences of obsessive experimentations on their art when looking for accurate definitions of their emotions and dreams, as well as the role of art and its commitment to society. Tejada teaches experimental photography at her studio; Josepo incorporates reclaimed materials, from his work in the construction business, and gives them new life.  Sandra Garcia-Pardo is the 2011 recipient of the Miami-Dade Community and Tourist Development Council Grants Program.

· “The Nature of Women” explores the world outside cities and towns: the kingdoms of animals and plants, the sunsets, mountains and vistas that inspire us as viewed, specifically through the eyes of women. Through Phoenix Marks’ photography and Jen Walls mixed-media work, they challenge the viewer to question: “What does our view of the wild say about our own human nature?” Marks serves as President of the National League of American Pen Women (Fort Lauderdale Branch) and Vice President of the Broward Art Guild; Walls has taught art in North Carolina and will participate this summer in the Artist in Residence program at the Olive Stack Gallery in Ireland.

· “Nature” is an exhibit displaying two artists’ love and perspective on the world we live. Brett Aiton having extensive training with animals, shows his love and respect for the creatures that keep humanity alive in his colorful oil paintings. Cynthia Bebak Inklebarger is an experienced mixed-media artist that paints nature from an abstract lens. Her style ranges from finite detail to colorful representations of the environment. Both of their devotion to the outside is evident in their differing illustrations. Aiton’s admiration of wildlife began in his native Indiana and studies in Veterinary Medicine. He has also written a series of teenage fiction books. Inklebarger has taught art and served as a docent and researcher for a non-profit art institution in Miami.

· “Spectrums of Color” by Tatiana Cast, Terry Arroyo Mulrooney and Carlos Gonzalez, showcases the vision of three artists regarding colors, shapes and light. Each artist with a unique style and perspective, demonstrates the great diversity that exists in the visual arts world. Cast is an art consultant and curator; Mulrooney is involved with the non-profit organization M.U.J.E.R. Florida and has provided families with paintings that replicate portrait photos that she took of children of families seeking support services from M.U.J.E.R.; Many of Gonzalez’ paintings are inspired by South Florida’s vibrant, musical influences.
