TEXTILE FOLK ART COLLAGE

KIANGA PARKER Levels: All

Each participant will create a 2-dimensional collage using African textiles, yarn, paper, beads, and leather. Students will be given templates to assist in the construction of the body and instruction on making any clothing or accessories. Using fabric glues and some minor hand sewing, each collage will adhere to a handmade paper background. Cutting and gluing are the major skills needed. Hand sewing is optional, imagination is required.

HAND BUILT FUNCTIONAL POTTERY  (YIXING TEAPOTS)

YING ZHOU Levels: 1-2

Learn the essential techniques of producing functional hand-built pottery. Students will learn how to create a template and work from it. Slab and coil will be the primary construction methods and surface decoration will include the use of decals, underglaze, brush decoration, wax resist, colored slips, and your own custom stamps. Learn about the construction of Yixing teapots and their function, specifications, and the background behind these historical forms.

LAYERS OF COLLAGE

MAXWELL MITTMAN   Levels: All

Learning to work with watercolor and mixed media creates an excellent foundation to develop painting skills. Students will learn how to use watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, and ink to develop their expertise. The class will also explore multimedia techniques such as collage, stamping, and stenciling. Participants will learn watercolor basics and how to approach the subject matter of their choice.

 

Incorporate collage techniques into your paintings to create dense surfaces and textures. Liven-up your paintings by layering colored paper, found images, fabric swatches, and natural materials. This class will build from classic examples of collage and grattage techniques by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Max Ernst, and Romare Bearden. Digital collage with Photoshop will also be discussed during the class.

PAINT YOUR OWN CERAMICS

Three hours—evenings or Saturdays

Have a private ceramics painting party for any occasion with friends or colleagues. Paint ceramic tabletop accessories like pitchers, bowls, and plates. These items make perfect, functional gifts!  Work in our state-of-the-art ceramic studios with instruction from our experienced faculty. Book a three-hour party for an evening or Saturday. In this one-day workshop students will have fun creating copper cuff bracelets by using beautiful textures and folding techniques. Demonstrations will include folding metal, the application of various textures using the rolling mill, surface finishes, and use of the torch. No experience is necessary

 

COUPLES RING MAKING PARTY!

ALICIA JANE BOSWELL

Enjoy your evening learning how to size, solder, texturize, and nish silver rings for each other! Everyone will learn the basics of how to use the torch to heat things up. No experience is necessary and all materials are included. Please wear closed toe shoes.

 

PHOTO IMAGE TRANSFER ON GLASS

Turn your own 2D art or personal photographs into permanent displays. Using a laser printer, students will copy and crop an image to the desired piece of glass during the first session of the class. The following week the paper backing will be removed and color additives will be discussed. A final kiln firing will complete the process. Come to class with a collection of photos or drawings (12”x 8” max. size) to discuss which would work best for the process. Completed pieces can be picked up three days after the final class.

 

DRAWING FOR BEGINNING STUDENTS

This class focuses on the basics of drawing lines, shapes, shades, perspectives and proportions.  students will use materials such as charcoal, pen, and pencils while learning each medium’s unique qualities to make 2D shapes appear 3D. This class is the foundation for all other visual art media because, as Michael Las Casas says, “Your paintings are only as good as your drawings.”

Summer Art Camp For Kids Ages 4.5 To 17 At Armory Art Center

Summer Art Camp at the Armory Art Center is filled with fun, creativity, character development, and self-esteem initiatives. The arts have the power to do all that and more! Their innovative theme weeks include drawing, painting, sculpture, jewelry,fiber arts, ceramics, and printmaking as a major focus enhanced with music, dance, games, and team building.  Activities are appropriate for ages 4.5 to 17.  The Rickie Report wishes we were younger as we share the details here. Camp Hours: 9am – 4:30pm
Drop off/Pick-up: 8:30-9:00 and 4:30-5:00

Extended care is available for $60 per child per week
Extended care hours: 8:am-8:30am and 5:00-5:30pm
