The hot new place to be this season is located in an Historic FEC Train Depot building in the heart of the City of Lake Worth, Florida. The 14,000 square foot Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts is attracting hundreds of interested people to its brand new hot shop. With three glory holes and two furnaces they have been scheduling back-to-back classes ever since they reopened in October.

Throughout the summer, Founder, JB Berkow along with Anita Holmes, Executive Director and Rick Eggert, Creative Director have worked hard to design an impressive line up of programming for the upcoming season.  They have four outstanding, world renowned Visiting Glass Artists coming to the center in 2016. These events will be three-day affairs. Thursday nights will be a private sit-down-dinner party where the artist will talk about their processes and inspirations. Friday nights will be a gallery opening centering around the visiting artist’s works and featuring two dimensional works by local artists.

“Grande Basket” by Laura Donefer

Finally, Saturday will be an afternoon demonstration by the visiting artist. Never before has there been this type of opportunity for Palm Beach County residents to meet and greet four of the top glass artists in the world and have the rare chance to learn about their processes, inspirations and actually see them creating. Visit the Center’s website to view the details and to register and pay for the Thursday and Friday night events.

The first of these events will coincide with the Lake Worth Art Synergy Event, which the Benzaiten Center is hosting for the second year in a row. Last year they had 32 local artists and organizations taking part in a mini-art-fair within the empty 5,000 square foot space of the building that will eventually house their fine art metal foundry. This year the highlight and kick-off to the event will be world-renowned glass artist, Laura Donefer, conducting a glass-blowing demo from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday, January 23. After that, will be an Art Synergy Awards Ceremony. Festivities will continue until 8pm with live music, light nibbles, wine and beer and is open to the public free of charge.

They also have a stimulating series of lectures every first Tuesday of the month from 6pm – 8pm. Every second Wednesday of the month they hold a Hump of the Hump Happy Hour from 5:30pm – 7:30pm in the evening featuring a glass blowing demo, wine, beer, and live entertainment. There are several fundraisers planned for the 2016 season including their signature event, ‘Glasstronomique,’ a ‘Casablanca Casino Night,’ and a cocktail party in the home of a major glass collector. They will also hold a community ‘Summer Solstice’ party in June. Again, check  website for dates, times and registration details.

Armory Art Center Annex Exhibition And Grand Opening Features “Discovering Our New World”

The Armory Annex in Lake Worth reopens its doors to host “Discovering Our New World”. For this photographic exhibit the Armory is privileged to collaborate with the renowned Palm Beach Photographic Centre of West Palm Beach. The show is part of the Photographic Centre’s “Picture My World” program. The exhibit features photographs taken by the children, who emigrated from Central America to the United States last year as part of a large influx of unaccompanied minors. The teens all now reside in Lake Worth and attend Palm Beach County schools.  The Rickie Report shares the details here and urges you to go and see the United States throughout the eyes of newcomers.

Images were selected from hundreds made over a nine-month period in which the teens, all recent immigrants from Central America, and their mentors met weekly to explore their new home of Lake Worth. Fifty photographic prints are accompanied by journal entries in English and Spanish. The entries provide insight into the children’s perilous journey to be reunited with family members.

The Armory is fortunate to have use of the Annex building through the Lake Worth CRA for the purpose of enhancing the Lake Worth arts community. Armory Art Center programming and exhibitions began September 2, 2014, and ran through the season until it was temporarily closed over the summer for significant CRA renovations. The Armory’s Executive Director Kim Harty and Director of Education and Exhibitions Liza Niles have had ongoing dialogue with Lake Worth community leaders and arts groups in discovering better ways for the Armory Annex to serve the local Lake Worth community.

The Annex is located at 1121 Lucerne Avenue, Lake Worth, FL 33460, across from CRA sponsored artist’s lofts and adjacent to the Lake Worth Central American community. Kim Harty said, “This exhibition is a perfect fit for the area. Local children will have their work and writings exhibited, and the families will be attending the exhibition and participating in the opening celebration. The arts community will enjoy this important exhibition.” Fatima Nejame, Director of the Photographic Centre, commented, “The project has built these children’s self esteem through the arts of photography and writing. This exhibit gives a powerful voice to a group previously voiceless.”

ART SALONS offer stimulating conversations with other artists in a relaxed setting. As a springboard to each of our explorations, professional artists from South Florida are invited to present their work, talk about what influenced them, and examine the work of influential artists showing in museums and galleries. Our discussions cover the gamut of contemporary art themes, including conceptual, cultural, socio/political, environmental, race and gender focused and aesthetic practices, the materials and techniques used to convey these ideas, and where we fit into the world of contemporary conceptual art. They’re also an opportunity to explore the practical side of being an artist, of professional development and the sharing of useful resources.  Salons are facilitated by Elle Schorr.

Paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculptures, installations, and a video lounge (in Lake Worth) will address a breadth of social, cultural, and aesthetic concerns. The work has been grouped into three themes: “The Individual”, The World”, and “Beyond”. “The Individual” is in Greenfield Gallery, “The World” is in East Gallery, both at The Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, and “Beyond” is in the Armory Annex Gallery in Lake Worth. This exhibition features nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists who are currently producing powerful, innovative work in the world of art.

Art Salons at the Armory have contributed to the understanding of contemporary art practices in South Florida since March, 2012. Presentations have been given by artists, writers, curators, gallerists, and collectors about their work, the work of well-known artists, and about professional artists’ development. The Armory Art Center is honoring the Art Salons with an exhibition this October, curated by Elle Schorr, founder and organizer of the Art Salons at the Armory.

Art Salons:

Continue to meet in the Armory Art Center Library on the first Tuesday night of each month from 6:30–8:30 pm beginning on Oct. 6th.

The cost is $10, payable at the door.

The schedule may vary and can be found at http://www.elleschorrphotography.com/salon-schedule.php, and at http://www.armoryart.org/ArtSalons.

See the work in the exhibition and learn more about the artists and presenters who have contributed to the success of Art Salons over the past three years. Many of the salon presentations are archived on-line as HD videos and can be viewed at http://www.elleschorrphotography.com/salon-presentations.php
