World Renown Artist, David Hayes’ Sculptures in Northwood

Thirteen large steel sculptures by noted Connecticut artist David Hayes will grace the Northwood Village shopping district of West Palm Beach for a year.  Northwood Village, located in northern West Palm Beach, is an oasis of restaurants, galleries and pedestrian friendly shops. The district has enjoyed a resurgence as a foodie destination in recent years, capped now by an exuberant display of outdoor sculpture. The Rickie Report suggests you stop by a little earlier for that dinner reservation, to take in all that Northwood has to offer!

NorthwoodA&W - Six Month Date Card_5x5_v4 C

Jon Ward, Executive Director of the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), states that “This brings an exciting, world-class display of modern sculpture to one of West Palm Beach’s most charming neighborhood shopping centers.” Northwood Village, located in northern West Palm Beach, is an oasis of restaurants, galleries and pedestrian friendly shops. The district has enjoyed a resurgence as a foodie destination in recent years, capped now by an exuberant display of outdoor sculpture.

The artwork will be sited outside of stores and shops in Northwood Village. Sculptures will be strategically placed on sidewalks, open spaces, grassy fields and courtyards where people walk on their way to work and shop. Artist David Hayes previously commented: “I like placing sculpture where people may view them on their own terms. It is important to bring artwork to public areas where anybody may enjoy it at their leisure.”

Son of the sculptor and exhibit curator John Hayes says that the exhibited artwork is part of a traveling museum exhibition and planning for this tour has been going on for over a year. Hayes worked closely with Jon Ward, who previously served on the Board of the Florida Council for Arts and Culture and had spearheaded major outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the region.

The sculptures are all created from welded steel plate and are designed for long-term public art exposure. The show consists of a variety of the artists’ different phases, including some screen pieces as well as iconic totems and even one hanging piece. Hayes selected to paint the pieces either in a semi-gloss black finish or bright multi-colors, depending on the feeling of the sculpture. The exhibition enjoys strong support from the community, including the village’s numerous residents and store owners.

The late artist enjoyed a six-decade long reputation as one of America’s great contemporary sculptors and has work included in the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum plus over 100 institutional collections across the country. He also designed jewelry for Pierre Cardin while living in Paris.

Janet Gold’s SOLO Exhibit “Cages and Collages” Features Vintage Collage and Mixed Media Assemblage

Janet Gold’s SOLO Exhibit, ”Cages and Collages” at Art Gallery 21 opens Friday night February 13th with a pre-Valentines celebration from 7pm to 9pm.  Working with collage for its limitless possibilities, Janet created and curated a cohesive show of her recent work.  She has worked in South Florida for over thirty years, in addition to a thirty-five year teaching career. Janet’s artwork has been shown nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, Hollywood movies, and behind people’s couches. Calling herself a “book killer” intrigues the viewer, but we see her as an “up-cycler” and “recycler” with artistic vision. The Rickie Report is pleased to share a sneak peek and invite the public to this free event!  There will be an Encore Art Social on Friday, February 27th.

"Anatomy of a Collage" by Janet Gold

“Anatomy of a Collage” by Janet Gold

Janet Gold tells The Rickie Report, ” This is Confessions of a Bookkiller… For this exhibit, I have created and curated a cohesive show of my recent work. I work with collage for its limitless possibilities. I search for vintage papers combing old bookstores, antique stores, flea markets, and the inimitable and irreplaceable EBay for my materials. I work with old books, book covers, and papers combining them with string, text, calligraphy, thread, paper, paper dolls, fabrics, vitreous and detritus and an occasional rusty bottle cap and/or found object. Things bought and things found. The collages are then assemblages of paper history built with old books as their base, ledgers from the 1800’s, mixed with text and wallpaper from the 1930’s, and fabric from men’s silk shirts from the 1980’s”.

"Mixed Message" by Janet Gold

“Mixed Message” by Janet Gold

“The birdcages are the newest path in my evolution from 2-D to 3-D work. They are spontaneous, creative, and decidedly quirky. The birdcages show up at my studio, and then there is a period of pure unadulterated creativity, from beginning to end. Collecting paper, cutting, sewing, weights and counterweights, design, placement, and balancing, all orchestrated into a final product, which is always a surprise, even to me. Come see the show. Come see all of the old books and birdcages that have been rescued”.

You Are Invited to Robin Kimball’s Exhibit at OSGS

Robin Kimball’s paintings can best be described as “modern realism with a heavy influence of  Vermeer, Velasquez, the impressionists and contemporary realists”.  Her paintings and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces are currently being featured at OSGS Gallery in Northwood Village. Robin’s artistic flair and conceptual creativity has been long-known to art lovers from New England.  We are happy to say she now has her home and studio in Palm Beach.  The public is invited to the opening reception on February 7th. The Rickie Report shares the details in this article.

Robin, originally from Massachusetts, studied fine arts at Boston University and worked as a graphic designer and then as a jewelry and home accessories designer. While living in Boston, Robin studied with many well-known painters and expanded her painting career while being represented by the Richard James Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina and the Charlestown Gallery in Rhode Island.

Robin now lives in Palm Beach and maintains a studio and studies with Miroslav Antic at the Armory Art Center. She says, “ My work can best be described as modern realism and is heavily influenced by artists such as Vermeer, Velasquez, the impressionists and contemporary realists”.

Robin has been drawn to antiquities and often uses objects and photographs from the 1800’s through the 1950’s as painting subjects.  This theme has carried through to her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.  She says, ” Both my paintings and jewelry showcase my love of color and pattern. They each rely on the reflection of light and color to achieve the results that I find most exciting! ”

Her whimsical series of paintings of vintage teacups, often juxtaposed against outdoor scenes will certainly catch your eye and are reminiscent of something from Alice in Wonderland.  Her figure paintings are nostalgic views painted from old black and white family photographs but are “colorized” with her own magic touch.

Robin’s jewelry, also with her vintage flair, will be on view and for sale. This is one show you won’t want to miss!  While in Northwood, you can browse through the many other galleries and shops and stop in on of the new restaurants that has arisen in historic area.

As for the gallery, art runs in the veins of gallery curators Evelyn and Jonathon Ortiz-Smykla. OSGS, is the embodiment of their love of art, and for sharing the work of talented artists. On any given day, a visit to their gallery sends guests crossing paths with a variety of works in many mediums that include modern-art paintings, sculptures, and home wares. But the team also does their own creating inside the studio: custom framing is available with a large number of options for materials, glass, matting, and mounting. The gallery also brings in guest speakers for the Bring Your Own Chair lecture series, whose dates are published on the gallery’s website. The gallery is located at 500 Northwood Road in West Palm Beach.
