Miniature Garden by Debbie Johnson

Debbie Johnson is an illustrator, clay artist and garden enthusiast. While growing up and living in Michigan, she was an avid gardener with two and a half acres to play with. She tells us, “When we moved to our tropical paradise I discovered a new world of gardening. Most of what I knew from my Michigan gardening adventures really did not apply here, so I began learning a little bit about bonsai and miniature gardening”.

“In 2015 my daughter inherited a kiln but it did not fit in her place and so it lives in my home studio. With a kiln here I wanted to play with clay and began making Fairy Garden Houses and Accessories. I love miniatures, doll house items, and fairy gardens! Fairy gardening is a great way to garden on a small scale. I try to design fairy garden accessories that are unique and beautiful. The items I make are safe for older children, so you can create a garden with them and allow their imaginations to soar”!

“Fairy gardening is not just for children! Most of my customers love gardening but can’t garden on a large scale for many reasons. Miniature and fairy gardening is satisfying and fun and I love to create items that are sturdy and lovely. They make great and one-of-a-kind gifts for gardeners!  Each piece is handcrafted from high-fire stoneware clay, then glazed with lead-free earthy colors. No two pieces are alike. They are made with love and I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy creating them”.

Hayley tells The Rickie Report, “I have been making whimsical clay figures since 1988. I try to make them fun for the buyers and fun for them and their friends to look at. The artwork has expanded over the last 26 years as I have tried new ideas and perfected new methods”.

“New artwork is always coming into my head and new techniques for making it more whimsical and more fun are a constant, ongoing process. My bright colors are a signature part of my work, as is the blending of those colors through my airbrush techniques”.

“The figures are all sculpted from blocks of clay. They are then fired in one of my kilns to harden them. Then the colors are applied, and back into the kiln again up to a bit over 1800 degrees. Then the clear glaze is applied and the figures are again fired in the kiln to get the finished artwork”.

Jan tells The Rickie Report,”I have always been a crafty sort of person but did not begin my ‘art’ career until I was in my 40s, and then, it was by accident”… A girlfriend wanted to take a class in stained glass but didn’t want to go alone, so I signed up too. Little did I know that six weeks later I would be hooked! There was so much to learn that I became an apprentice, and then took a job in a commercial glass studio. In the next five years I was fortunate to work on many varied and interesting projects as well as to teach classes.

“Now I work from my home studios in Parkland, Florida and Dahlonega, Georgia doing private commissions, as well as creating inventory for the shows I participate in each year”. In addition to traditional stained glass in the lead and copper foil methods, Jan specializes in what is known as an “overlay” process. By creating a silhouette image from metal and affixing it to a piece of glass, she attains a great deal of detail in a cost effective way.

Jan goes on to share, “The gourd art came about, again, by accident. While shopping in a home furnishing store I chanced upon what I thought was a beautiful rustic vase. It turned out to be a gourd. I bought it and after much contemplation I decided “well shoot, I can do this”.

She hunted down some gourds (not easy to find in south Florida) and began her journey. “A lot of what I know about gourd art has come from books and trial and error. The finer techniques I have learned in workshops from artists involved in the Florida Gourd Society. I am currently a member of the American, Florida, and Georgia Gourd Societies”.

Ricki Levine shares, “After retirement from a career in the Computer Industry, boredom set in! I began knitting, a skill I had learned as a child. I was enthralled by the changes in the yarns and colors – and they inspired me to create my own designs. When I was out in one of my creations, people would ask to purchase one–I was amazed to discover that I had creative talent when I had only exercised the mechanical side of my brain during my career”!

Ricki’s Knits are all original creations, hand knitted by her. Ricki’s products include jackets, shawls, ponchos, scarves, capes and caplets. Each unique garment is a combination of 25 yarns of different textures and colors that blend together to create a unique piece of fiber art. “My color sense and attention to detail allow me to produce designs that are both fashionable and artistic. Currently, I am in several Florida boutiques in Naples, Sanibel Island, and Coral Gables, and display my work at the Howard Alan events in South Florida. I’m not bored anymore”!

As Ricki’s husband says, “Every woman looks better when they wear one of my wife’s garments”! (She tells us, “Obviously he is extremely prejudiced, but I hope you will enjoy wearing my designs as much as I enjoy creating them for you”).

This art show is a perfect setting for shoppers eager to kick off the season and get a jump-start on their holiday shopping while exploring the diverse art displays and avoiding the hectic and crowded malls. Festival patrons will have the opportunity to explore the original work of more than 200 of the finest artists in the country that have been selected from hundreds of applicants.
