Leslie Perlis

Dimensional Mosaics with Fused and Painted Glass Elements

Celebrated glass designer Leslie Perlis brings her vibrant and modern style to the timeless craft of mosaics – with a sculptural twist. Leslie’s unique approach weaves together glass fusing, kiln fired surface decorating and mosaic fabrication to create outstanding dimensional sculptures. In this presentation you will learn how Leslie thinks outside the traditional mosaic canvas to create life-size figure sculptures, musical instruments, and many other dimensional creations. Leslie will use photos, videos, and live descriptions to illustrate her complete process starting with the development of a design, through the fabrication and final cleanup of a full-size sculpture. In addition Leslie will introduce her new “Multimedia Vinyl” series that combines fused glass and vinyl record albums to great effect. As a bonus, everyone in this seminar will receive a copy of Leslie’s book Dimensional Mosaics that she will be happy to autograph for you.

Tony Glander

The Accidental Fuser or Warm Glass Trials and Tribulations

Glass Creation by Tony Glander

Experimentation can be an exhilarating adventure, full of thrilling highs and disappointing lows. Join glass artist Tony Glander as he escorts you down a few radical glass pathways. He will illustrate how he puts “landing gear” feet on fused bowls, describe some very cool creations made using shattered tempered glass, and explain a curious technique using molds made from glass in a kiln. Tony’s mantra is: “If you aren’t trying something new, you aren’t learning!” He’ll reveal some his most successful experiments and confess a few of his epic failures. Much of Tony’s work centers on the practice of using every glass temperature in the kiln and he is prepared to share his secret firing schedules with you. Tony’s dynamic teaching style will keep you engaged and boost your creative confidence to be experimentally innovative with your own glasswork.

Making Our Voice Heard: Advocating for the Art Glass Industry in Washington D.C.

Today information travels fast, opinions are developed even faster, and the facts are sometimes lost in between. No industry knows this better than the Art Glass Industry. In the last year our industry has faced increasing scrutiny that in some instances has inhibited our ability to do business. It is time now to be pro-active as a community and industry. Join us for a discussion about the role elected officials can play in helping and hindering our business, and how our industry can position itself to prevent our elected representatives and governing agencies from doing us harm.

McMow Art Glass & Wardell Publications
Organizer of GLASS QUEST 2017

McMow Art Glass offers the best in stained glass windows and beveled art glass, as well as beautiful designs in carved, etched and faceted glass. Located in Palm Beach County, Florida since 1976 McMow Art Glass maintains an excellent working relationship with top builders, architects and designers and regularly ships their work throughout the US, Europe and South America.  With our experienced staff of glass craftsmen and designers, McMow Art Glass is able to take every client’s concept and create a clearly outstanding work of art for any residence, commercial building or place of worship.
Visit us at: www.mcmow.com

Wardell Publications Inc. was founded in 1983 by Randy Wardell. In 1977 Randy opened a full service stained glass studio offering everything from Suncatchers to Cathedral windows (well maybe church windows is a more apt description). The studio also offered glass craft instruction and sold the related tools, glass & materials. The name of the company was Sandpiper Studios and it was (and still is) located in Belleville, a small city in eastern Ontario, Canada with a population of 38,000, so the axiom “anything [in glass] for a buck” wasn’t too far off.

Randy’s stained glass students would often ask for the pattern to make of one the custom designed lampshades on display in the Sandpiper Studios’ showroom. Encouraged by these requests he conducted a little market research that revealed a need for reliable, full-size pattern books. So in 1983 he formed Wardell Publications and released his first lampshade pattern book. Since then he has personally written 12 additional books and Wardell Publications Inc has released more than 50 products since it began.

About “Glassstress”:

Part of a new curatorial initiative to examine areas traditionally considered ‘craft,’ but which present alternative mediums of increasing interest to contemporary artists, Glasstress features 25-30 glass installations created by contemporary artists from around the world in collaboration with the international organization Glasstress, Venice and the master glass artisans of Berengo Studio, Murano. The results challenge our notion of glass as a ‘beautiful’ material and encourage us to explore the bold, political, and sometimes less than pristine aspects of the medium. Works included in the “Glasstress” Boca Raton exhibition incorporate performance, video, interactive media, design, and even video games, and delve into substantial content, from race, identity, and colonialism to themes of science and nature and issues of biological diversity, global hunger, and climate change.

Glass Creation by Rob Stern

About Rob Stern:

Born in Miami, Rob was reared in Atlanta where his mother taught art and his father worked in the movie industry  and dabbled in photography. Rob attended Northside High School for the Performing Arts, in Atlanta, where he was a member of an elite touring group, singing dancing, and acting.  While active in many traditional sports, he also enjoyed skateboarding, surfing and rock climbing.  All of these factors combined with the inventive and adventurous spirit he inherited from his grandparents, would be important to his future career as a glass artist.

Glass installation by Rob Stern

Rob attended San Francisco State University where he studied art and discovered glass making. He worked as an apprentice at John Lewis Glass, an industrial casting facility in Oakland for five years.  He traveled to Europe touring glass factories for a semester and then returned to begin his study at the Pilchuck Glass School, renowned worldwide for its glass programs.  Rob went on to study, apprentice and assist numerous artists/masters at Pilchuck and other schools.

Glass Creation by Rob Stern

In 1992, after working as a teaching assistant for Czech master, Petr Novotny, Rob was invited to work in the Ajeto Glass Factory in the Czech Republic.  It was the start of a long term working relationship, as he lived and worked there for a number of years.  He continues to work closely with Petr both in Ajeto and doing demonstrations and conducting workshops throughout the world. From 1997-2003 Rob taught glassmaking at the University of Miami, FL and earned his MFA.  Rob now co-teaches with many artists/master at schools worldwide and frequently travels abroad to make his work. He has been invited to work as a master craftsman in both the US and Europe. In 2003, he established Rob Stern Art Glass Inc. in Miami , where he now works with his team on many commissions and personal sculptures.

Glass Creation by Rob Stern

“I consider myself to be very fortunate to have traveled, studied and lived in many places where glass is made by masters.  I have experienced many cultures, techniques, and the people who I have met have greatly influenced me.  I draw my inspiration from this, from music and from mostly everything I see in nature.  Working as a glass artist has enabled me to view the world as fluid, reflective, and full of light.  I strive to express emotion in my work and my other primary goal is the share the gift of glass with others”.

About Gina Sneiderman:

Gina Sneiderman started working with glass over the summer of 2012.  After selling her sign company, she gave herself some time to find her creative outlet and came across McMow Art Glass’ beginner stained glass class.  After completing that class and several stained glass projects, she decided to give fusing a try and was hooked, from the first day.  A short few months later, at the McMow Annual Holiday party, she bought her first kiln and the following year at the same party, she bought her second kiln. Gina has taken numerous classes in fusing at McMow Art Glass; at a couple of other teaching studios; and at the Glass Craft & Bead Expo in Las Vegas.
She especially likes to work with architectural styles of glass and with deep pieces – glass casting is her absolute favorite.

McMow Art Glass Announces World Premiere Of Their Own Exclusive Sheet Glass To Celebrate 40th Anniversary

In honor of their 40th Anniversary, McMow Art Glass in cooperation with Bullseye Glass, has created a one-of-a-kind art glass sheet style. This custom, hand-rolled glass is used for all types of art glass including kiln-formed (fused), mosaic, and stained glass. Phil Materio, Vice-President of McMow Art Glass pulled inspiration from the colors, art and architecture that have made both South Beach and Palm Beach so famous.  “FLORAdia” glass is named for his mother, Flora Materio.  This style will be exclusive to McMow Art Glass and its customers. The Rickie Report shares the backstory and some sneak peeks.  Kudos to McMow for celebrating this milestone in such a meaningful and creative way!

Phil Materio tells The Rickie Report, “We found inspiration in the design aesthetic which has made South Florida a mecca for artists of all kinds. Bright pops of color, tropical weather, and design and architecture from the neighboring cities of both Palm Beach and South Beach provided us with ample inspiration”!

FLORAdia Glass: A Bullseye/McMow Collaboration!

mcmowIMG_8906

Close-up of FLORAdia Glass Bowl

In collaboration with Bullseye Glass Co, McMow worked to create a this one-of-a-kind art glass sheet style. This custom, hand-rolled glass is used for all types of art glass including kiln-formed (fused), mosaic, and stained glass.

Phil Materio, Vice-President of McMow Art Glass knew that he wanted glass that would feel like South Florida. We pulled inspiration from the colors, art and architecture that have made both South Beach and Palm Beach so famous. When the colors came together it was exactly what he had envisioned – a perfect blend of the these two stunning destinations. He decided to name the glass after his mother Flora Materio. Flora lived in South Florida and often times traveled with Phil to both South & Palm Beach to see McMow’a installations in both areas. Remembering these trips he knew immediately FLORAdia was the perfect name for this new glass creation.

FLORAdia Glass Bowl

Phil shares, “While I have fond memories of my mom in Florida, it was really her encouragement that led me to immerse myself in the art glass world,” said Phil Materio, Vice President of McMow Art Glass. “I couldn’t think of anyone I would like to honor more than my mom on our 40th anniversary year. She was one of the big reasons McMow even came to be.”

How is art glass made:

“We worked alongside the glass crafter at Bullseye to determine which colors would be compatible with each other. Bullseye has a very similar business model – also getting started about 40 years ago. Like McMow, they know that art glass is a fine art and have pushed the envelope of working with glass year after year”.

Here’s a video about glass making at Bullseye

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO7584g57z0

Glass is made by melting together several minerals at very high temperatures. Silica in the form of sand is the main ingredient and this is combined with soda ash and limestone and melted in a furnace at temperatures of 1700°C. Other materials can be added to produce different colors or properties.
What is Art Glass? colored glass that’s manufactured for use in art and architecture. This type of glass can be used for stained glass and mosaic work, and most are tested-compatible for fusing and other methods of forming glass within a kiln.

NEW! ABSTRACT GLASSPRESSIONISM

With Randy Wardell
Saturday April 30th 9am-3pm

$250.00

This class will begin with a visual study of works created by the founders of the Abstract Expressionism movement that emerged in the 40’s & 50’s, during a time of Cold War politics and social conservatism. These artists were inspired by the jazz music of their time, often listening to jazz while creating their works. We’ll follow their lead and have some fine jazz playing in the classroom studio to inspire our own Glasspressive content.

Randy will describe and demonstrate a number of decorative glass techniques that are essential for this process including frit stenciling, stringer shaping, wet noodles, powder smears, sifting, stick lighting, cold combing, flyspecking, plus many more.
