BROWARD QUILTER’S
INAUGURAL AIRING OF THE QUILTS
SUNDAY, JANUARY 27, 2019
11 am – 5 pm
Broward Quilt Expo is proud to announce its inaugural Broward Quilters’ Airing of the Quilts event. An “airing of the quilts” is a traditional outdoor event in many communities across the United States and around the world. Airings range from simple displays of quilts on clotheslines to “takeovers” of entire towns such as the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, OR.
Stranahan House – Oldest surviving structure in Broward County, is on the National Register of Historic Places. On the Tarpon River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Frank Stranahan built it in 1901 as a trading post and converted it into a residence for his wife, Ivy, in 2906. Stranahan House Museum
This event is an opportunity for Broward County quilters to bring our work into the community and to celebrate our art. It is a chance to share the unique history of quilting and quilt makers with our visitors. We’ll be displaying quilts on the two covered porches of the house, along the fencing around the house perimeter, and between trees.
Our event is taking place during Fort Lauderdale Art & Design Week (January 19–27, 2019), a result of the desire to unite all of Fort Lauderdale’s arts and cultural institutions in a celebration of everything art and culture throughout the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The ultimate goal in creating this week is to establish Fort Lauderdale as an international cultural destination.
ABOUT BROWARD QUILT EXPO:
Broward Quilt Expo, Inc. is a federally-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to promote and perpetuate the art of quilting. We are an organizational body governed by volunteers from the member guilds, currently East Sunrise Quilt Guild, Inc., Southern Stars Quilt Guild, Coral Springs Quilters, Inc., West Broward Quilters Guild, Inc., South Florida Modern Quilt Guild, and Quilting in the Pines Guild, Inc. All of our funding comes from public support, including membership fees, gifts and grants, and receipts from events we organize.
Every two years, six quilt guilds in Broward County, Florida, come together to present the Broward Quilt Expo (BQE). It is one of the most exciting and expansive quilt shows in South Florida, and takes place in sunny Fort Lauderdale.
In 2019, our show event is being expanded to cover an entire week!
- Monday March 4th : Miniature Quilt Auction (evening, free event) at ArtServe
