Let Love Guide Your Way”by Lloyd Goradesky

What is Kinetic Art? Kinetic Art is a form of art that depends on movement for its effect. The word kinetic means relating to motion. Since the early 20th Century, artists have been incorporating movement into art. This has been partly to explore the possibilities of movement, partly to introduce the element of time, partly to reflect the importance of the machine and technology in the modern world and partly to explore the nature of vision.

“Kinetic Art Exhibit attracts artists and celebrates kinetic art, branding the City as a premier arts destination,” said Eleanor Krusell, Director of Marketing & Events for the City of Boynton Beach. “This year’s exhibit will attract families and art patrons to Boynton Beach.”

The outdoor installations are accessed via an easy-to-walk self-guided tour. During opening weekend, the FREE public event will take place on Saturday, March 6th, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 7th, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Highlights during this year’s event include an unveiling of world-renowned kinetic sculptor Ralfonso’s piece “Reflections”. This gateway feature for the City’s Town Square redevelopment project is located at the North East corner of E Ocean Ave. and Seacrest Blvd. The 27’ high sculpture features twenty-one 3ʹ to 11’ long bird-like wings that rotate in the wind. Fabricated by EES Designs, this stainless-steel artwork reflects nature by day and is colorfully lit at night. The wings intersect, representing the City’s diversity and unity. Three Zen-shaped seating walls provide sculpture viewing and a community- gathering place.

Additionally, “Synesthesia” by Donald Gialanella located at 120 E. Ocean Ave., will also be unveiled in November 2020. This artwork plaza is interactive during the day, engaging all generations and abilities with vibrant sounds and surface reflections. At night, it emits ambiance with soothing sounds and ever-changing light.

WHAT IS KINETIC ART?

Kinetic Art ranges from optical illusions to mechanical movement. Most kinetics are interactive, made up of parts designed to be set in motion by an internal mechanism or an external stimulus, such as a Solar, Water, Wind, Electricity or Viewer-Interactive. In contrast to fine art exhibits in galleries and studios, Kinetic Art is an interactive format that leads viewers to explore how it is made and how it moves. Some Kinetic Art installations are set up so that the observer can walk in, on, or become a part of, them. Kinetics communicates sensorial experiences, allows the artist to break barriers and often includes multiple disciplines. Because it is constantly evolving, Kinetic Art embraces new ways to use and even improve technology for everyday life.

2019 International Kinetic Art Exhibition and Symposium:

An international collaboration between

Anthony Castronovo and Eleonora Nicoletti

The Solar Shimmer project consists of a long screen or textile-like installation composed of recycled CDs and solar lanterns.  A unique design will be created that will be site – specific for Boynton Beach. The size of the proposed project is 6’ x 36’ and is composed of three panels. Students will participate by designing their own solar lanterns made with small, recycled plastic bottles. They will also assist with the installation of Solar Shimmer in which their artworks will be hung on the fence to create the pattern in the project.

Students will be engaged throughout the project and will be able to take their lanterns home at the end of the installation. The artists will provide materials in the form of PDFs and videos to engage students in an inspiring discussion of contemporary solar art, unique architectural applications of photovoltaics, and elements of sustainability such as material waste and reuse.

High school students at Boynton Beach Community High School create mini-mobile kinetic art project

The students created the mobiles in visual art instructor Ms. Gwenn Seuling’s class. The mobiles, along with participant’s written intentions, will cover four downtown trees to create a curtained outdoor “room” with positive messages that will blow in the wind. The project gave high school students enrolled in visual arts, earth science and computer classes an opportunity to participate in a community project and to learn about kinetic art.

Elayna Toby Singer

The temporary site specific art installation Kinetic Intentions is the brainchild of Elayna Toby Singer, last year’s International Kinetic Art “People’s Choice” winner. Over two days, February 4-5, Kinetic Intentions will “come to life” in the park just east of Boynton’s Civic Center, as thousands of festival attendees create and attach Intention Ribbons, and mini-Mahogany mobiles (or select from hundreds on display from community workshops) to recycled washers on the 150 six-foot kinetic strands.  Visitors to the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium will be drawn to walk in and around the magical outdoor “room” made of twirling strands adorned with mirrors, bells, found washers, community created mini-mahogany mobiles and intention ribbons; all which animate the wind.

Kinetic Intentions Workshop

“Kinetic Intentions is a community ‘moving meditation’ for manifesting personal and environmental balance,” says Singer. “With every breath, positive thought (intention) and movement we are ‘mobilized’ to take better care of ourselves and the environment which sustains us.”   Central to this environmental community art project are thousands of Florida Native Mahogany seed pods Singer collected locally from shade trees along neighborhood streets and parking lots throughout Palm Beach County.

Kinetic Intentions Workshop

Singer chose the Mahogany seed pod specifically due to its threatened status in its native habitat from over harvesting for furniture. She sees the recycled pods as a symbol of the delicate balance between us and our environment. The challenge of sustaining balance becomes tangible as the public uses the recycled Mahogany pods to create a balanced mobile.

ABOUT KINETIC INTENTIONS:

Following the success of the February 2015 Kinetic-Connections, which won the People’s Choice Award for the transformation of an historic kapok tree into living kinetic art, artist Elayna Toby Singer created Kinetic Intentions. The multi-phase community project included six county-wide, free workshops that explored “the Art, Science & Soul of Making Mobiles” under the direction of Singer. Each mini-mobile is constructed using fishing line and recycled seed pods from Florida’s Mahogany trees which are threatened to extinction in the wild. Participants experienced the centering, meditative process of mobile making while pondering their intentions for personal and environmental balance. Those intentions were written onto cloth ribbons which will be affixed, along with the mobiles to an outdoor, kinetic “room” during the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium February 2017. Ms. Singer creates the outdoor, kinetic “room” with 150 six-foot long twirling strands adorned with mirrors, bells, found washers, community created mini-mahogany mobiles and intention ribbons suspended among four trees in Boynton Beach, FL during the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium. Attendees to the Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium are invited to create their own mini-mobile and intention ribbon, or to select ones from the workshops and add them to each strand, bringing the tree art installation to “life.” Kinetic Intentions is commissioned by Boynton Beach Art in Public Places.

ABOUT THE ART OF ELAYNA TOBY SINGER:

Elayna Toby Singer has been creating kinetic art sculpture and jewelry since the mid 1990’s and incorporating “found objects” since 2003. Locally, her commissioned works and exhibitions have been shown in Palm Beach and Broward Counties for more than six years. In 2015 her temporary site specific community creation “Kinetic-Connections” received the People’s Choice Award for magically transforming an historic Kapok tree into a kinetic sculpture with upcycled objects from the community. In 2009, Elayna Toby was invited by Habla: The Center for Language and Culture in Merida Mexico, to lead her first “Natural Mobiles” workshop. With a BS in Cultural Anthropology and an MS in Public Horticulture and Museum Management, Ms. Singer’s career in creative place-making began in the early 1990’s when she spent fifteen years in some of the nation’s leading public gardens and arboreta creating experiences that engaged the public in the art, science and heritage of plants and the essential role they play in our lives.

Elayna Toby’s “Art That Moves” : Imaginative Mobiles For Your Home And Garden and Wearable Kinetic Adornments

Artist Elayna Toby sees an interconnectedness of nature and human-made items that most of us miss. She started as a jeweler in the late 1980’s and has been creating mobiles since the mid 1990’s and incorporating “found objects” since 2003. She has had commissioned works and exhibitions throughout Palm Beach County over the past seven years. Her true joy is transforming ordinary objects into the extraordinary.  Elayna Toby’s re-imagining and re-purposing  brings us decorative kinetic mobile for the home and garden plus wearable sculpture! Her moving sculptures stir, sway and twirl outdoors in the wind – and indoors by the breeze of a fan or vent.  Feel the freedom of the movement! The Rickie Report shares Elayna Toby’s journey to bring us “Art That Moves” just in time for the holidays. Here are some sneak peeks and the story of her journey.

An Introduction:

Elayna Toby

Elayna Toby Singer shares, “I am drawn to materials that come from the earth and to forms transformed through encounters with the elements. Presented in new contexts, each object’s intrinsic beauty is revealed. Balance and movement stir from the center connecting with our emotional, physical and spiritual core. Linking one object to the next, both physically and visually, awareness moves between root and crown. The space between reminds us to breathe. With each twirl and sound, energy shifts, spirit awakens, transformation occurs”.

Over a year ago, as the City of Boynton Beach prepared for the 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium, Elayna Toby’s vision for transforming an old kapok tree into a kinetic sculpture was percolating. For three days only, February 6-8, 2015, the tree was transformed into living kinetic art with 16-foot long, twirling strands bedecking its grand limbs.  This magical community art project was honored with the “People’s Choice Award,” selected by thousands of attendees who voted on 14 outdoor showcased kinetic sculptures by artists from around the world.

“Kinetic-Connections” at the kapok tree

Elayna Toby conceived of “Kinetic Connections” as a way to encourage everyone to tap their inner artist, re-imagine everyday objects as art, and to join in on the transformative project. She held community workshops; provided County-wide drop boxes for contributed items; and ultimately combined the items with her own pieces to craft the thousands of objects into the kinetic strands.

Selected from more than 100 International entries, “Kinetic-Connections” was featured as one of 25 Kinetic Projects in CODA magazine, being. The creative up-cycling, community art project Kinetic-Connections is still making an impact in the art world.

“Re-Imagination Series”

The artist tells The Rickie Report, “During the Kinetic Art Symposium half of the 16 foot long strands were sold right off the tree. To celebrate “the season of light” and forthcoming New Year, the remaining strands from the kapok tree are being “Re-Imagined” into 4 foot strands with more embellishments, including additional mirrors which delightfully reflect and bounce the light. These new mobiles are now available in my online shop to add twirling happiness to one’s home or garden”.

“Excessories”

Recently inspired by a friend wondering what to do with the remaining “onesie” earrings after its match is lost or broken, Elayna Toby created “Excessories”, which invited the public to contribute their excess accessory pieces towards the original project. A percent of proceeds will benefit the development of the local fashion district in Palm Beach County.

Elayna Toby continued her tradition of collecting “stories of stuff,” which provided a rich narrative for the individual pieces, and for the sculpture composition as a whole. She tells us, ” A tape measure from noted Worth Avenue designer Alfred Fiadace; a lapel pin in the shape of a submarine donated from the wife of a man who retired from the Navy – the stories are moving, whimsical and meaningful.

Note the “onesie” earring which is now part of  “Excessories”

Nearly 200 re-imagined pieces were combined into a rich composition of colors, textures and sounds. The individual “excessories” themselves include pieces by Roberto Cavalli and Versace, vintage couture, tools of the trade (spools, tape measures) and more. The results is a kinetic wall sculpture; a visual tapestry woven with the histories behind each piece.

Personalized Adornments:

Elayna Toby began as a jewelry designer, fashioning her first kinetic piece as earrings. Her “aha” mobile moment happened when she was working at a botanical garden. Inspired by Mother Nature’s exquisite beauty, Elayna Toby collected fallen seeds and branches which she combined with beads to create her earliest kinetic works.  The journey continues today with her mobile kinetic earrings that express her passion for repurposing and creative reuse.

Elayna Toby uses only “cold connections” – no welding or soldering. She combines wrapping and knotting techniques, swivels and metal links, to connect one object to another.  Re-imagined and re-purposed everyday objects are combined to extraordinary effect.  All of her moving sculpture and kinetic jewelry are one-of-a-kind.

LOCAL CONNECTIONS:

LOCAL COMPANIES BRING REAL-WORLD INNOVATIONS TO BOYNTON BEACH KINETIC ART EXHIBIT!

The International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium, which will be held Feb. 6-8, 2015, in Boynton Beach is designed to connect visitors and participants to one-of-a-kind visual experiences.  Contributing toward that goal will be Boynton Beach-based Boca Bearings and Flipstone Technology’s HackLab, which will each bring real-world technical innovations to the weekend event.
In addition to highlighting their line of ball bearings, roller bearings and linear bearings, which are used by kinetic artists to create their work, and educating the public on how bearings work, Boca Bearings will have multi-rotor and 3-D printing demonstrations at the event. Similar to a hybrid helicopter because it is a multi-rotor aircraft, these small, radio controlled flying machines are being used increasingly for aerial photography and surveillance. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that creates three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The object is created by laying down consecutive layers of material until the entire object is created.

(http://tinyurl.com/olrhtqm), Kinetic artist Jennifer Townley will exhibit her entry, “Bussola,” which is named after the Italian word for “compass,” as this three-dimensional work was inspired by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s designs for a compass dating from 1514. The skeleton-like structure seems to behave like a natural organism that slowly moves forward through space.

Flipstone Technology’s Hacklab North Boynton:

Flipstone Technology’s nonprofit organization, Hacklab North Boynton, is dedicated to making the community more aware of real-world technological innovations. (http://tinyurl.com/mpysss2) In keeping with this commitment, Hacklab  North Boynton is bringing its interactive “Daft Booth” to the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium. Based on the sound booth used at the 2014 Grammy Awards by by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, the “Daft Booth” is an interactive soundboard that incorporates musical samplings of the duo.  Buttons, light and sound are meshed together in such a way that anybody can use the booth to turn themselves into their own DJ.

Sarah Younger, a 2013 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium “People Choice Award” winner, has partnered with Hacklab North Boynton to offer free public workshops Jan. 10 and 24, 2015, on how to work with technologies and build renewable energy art forms. Completed projects will be showcased at the International Art Exhibit and Symposium. For more information, visit www.LampInfo.org; emailLampInc@comcast.net; or on Facebook at Living Arts Meta Programs.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT TO KINETIC ART:

The exhibit and symposium also leaves room to connect with kinetic art through educational presentations both days. Presenters include working kinetic artists and educators Paul Daniels, Behnaz Farahi, Jay Flanzbaum, Angus Forbes, Jerzy Kedziora, Cory Oliver, Ralfonso, Nancy Schiffer, and Rein Treifeldt. They will cover the historical, present and future of kinetic art.

Kinetic Connections

There will be interactive participation in many of the displays. For example, visitors are invited to meet artist Elayna Toby who has transformed an old tree into a kinetic sculpture.

Kinetic-Connections conecpt tree.ElaynaTobyArt

Meet Me At The Tree!

A compilation video about the hundreds of community contributed items that make up Kinetic-Connections will be featured adjacent to the transformed tree during the 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibition and Symposium from February 6-8, 2015.

Kinetic-Connections will be a temporary piece taken down at the end of the symposium, leaving the tree in its original state, as if untouched. The strands, inspired by and generated from the community, will then be “recycled” back into the world, made available for sale as decorations for home or garden. A portion of the proceeds from sales of these strands will benefit the City of Boynton Beach Art in Public Places program and Resource Depot.

Kinetic Solar Butterflies

Kinetic Solar Butterflies

Visitors can also learn about solar energy and construct dancing solar butterflies that will join hundreds of other solar butterflies on exhibit at the City’s Schoolhouse Children’s Museum. There’s an opportunity to become your own DJ by using the buttons, lights and sounds in HackLab North Boynton’s “Daft Booth,” inspired by the Grammy Award winning group Daft Punk.

Complementing these activities will be original projects such as an outdoor kinetic dance performance by Boytnon Beach Community High School’s dance academy. Students from Ft. Lauderdale’s Central Charter School will exhibit their maquette and marketing plans for their solar tree project.

SolART

Educational component of the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium.

Central Charter School of Boca Raton, Florida will participate in the International Solar Tree Kinetic Art Sculpture program created by International Kinetic artist Rein Triefeldt.

When the Arts Commission was forming their visioning plan their goal was to deliver an art event that transcended typical art fairs, brought international attention to the City of Boynton Beach, educated and engaged the public in the arts.  Ralfonso shared similar goals and was often approached by educators to speak to students about how Kinetic Art is made. Ralfonso brought his experience with kinetic art projects. He collaborated with universities in China and Sweden to integrated the creative disciplines such as sculpture, engineering, science, physics, fabrication and the environment to create dynamic kinetic art sculptures.  These have been huge successes and a learning experience for all involved.

Kinetic Art organization co-founder,  Rein Treifledt who has created functional solar driven kinetic art throughout the Nation and now Internationally was introduced to the collaborative.  Rein’s interdisciplinary curriculum is the exact focus for integrated based  learning that is now becoming a National standard.  He has been working with professors at Drexel University to incorporate his Kinetic Solar Art curriculum into the national school systems.

Alexandre Dang comes from a scientific background. Convinced of the need to raise awareness of the potential of environmental friendly technologies (eco-technologies) and sustainable development, he developed his artistic creation often incorporating solar energy as source into his kinetic art works. Though the sun provides 10,000 times more energy to the earth than humans need, more than 1.7 billion people still do not have access to electricity. The pressing need to address this issue is the driving force of Dang’s artistic commitment, where he combines scientific approach, environmental concern and humanism. To learn more, visit solarsolidarite.org.

Dang will also conduct workshops at Galaxy E3 (Engineering, Energy, Environment) Elementary School in Boynton Beach on Friday, Feb. 6. Students there will also create dancing solar butterflies that will be added to the exhibit at the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center. Both the school and the museum are excited to bring this valuable workshop to their facilities as it aligns with their S.T.E.A.M., Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math programming.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE

“FOCUS ON PLANNING” PHOTO CONTEST

The winners of the Focus on Planning Photo Contest were announced by Mayor “Jerry” Taylor. The photo contest was held to commemorate National Community Planning Month and recognize urban design features within the City limits. Photographs must have captured Boynton Beach’s distinctive architecture; its urban designs, cityscapes, landmarks and/or structures.

Professional photographers and community leaders served as judges and selected finalists, based on subject matter, composition, clarity, lighting, depth of field, artistry/drama, degree of difficulty, technical excellence, creativity and overall impact. Five of the finalists were placed online for the public to choose “A People’s Choice Award”. Nearly 800 votes were cast from all over the world, including places as far as New Zealand and Brazil. Judges then selected the top winner in both the youth category and adult category and Mayor Taylor selected a “Special Mayor’s Award”. Winners are as follows:

Courage and confidence, striking design and simplicity of materials give Debbie Mostel’s jewelry an eternal quality she has long been noted for. Silver and gold, glass rods and globes and yes, intricate pieces from computer parts create sensual, organic, statement-making pop-art jewelry designed with the future in mind.

Debbie Lee Mostel, BFA California College of the Arts and Pratt Institute in New York, was trained by master goldsmith, Ellen Broker, and master silversmith, Hans Christensen, of Copenhagen, Denmark. Early in her career, after a stint with Tiffany’s, Mostel formed her own company. Her work in the wholesale jewelry business brought her acclaim when her designs were carried by Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Ave.  Debbie’s jewelry was also seen in Richard Avedon’s fashion photographs.

Featured in dozens of magazines, Mostel’s work has depth and credibility. Her jewelry was photographed on top models such as Becky Johnson and has graced the cover of Vogue,Glamour, Bazzar, and the inside pages of the New Yorker Magazine, LA Magazine, the New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, just to name a few.

Mostel’s work has been compared with illustrious designer Robert Lee Morris who came up during the same era as Mostel. Both designers have been influenced by the forms they find in nature and their interest in sculpting. Both love the feel and look of silver and perhaps one difference may be in the stunning simplicity of Mostel’s designs.

“Joyful Universe” by Debbie Mostel

“Joyful Universe” will be on display at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County from Dec 16th–Feb 10th.  Debbie tells The Rickie Report, ” Upon creating this piece what occurs to me most profoundly is the beautiful planet we live on. Even with its changing political boundaries, ecological uncertainty, and polluted waterways our planet is a miracle in our Universe. I am A Science based thinker/Designer/artist who sees the blessings and wonders in every drop of water and behind every blade of grass. I don’t mean to get too sappy, but I do feel passionately connected to our Earth. Sadly, too many humans today are just out of touch with their home.”

February 6-8, 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium created by the Boynton Beach Arts Commission produced by the City of Boynton Beach through its Art in Public Places program. It’s a signature cultural event for the City’s Strategic Plan and is key to it’s economic development planning.

The objectives of this biennial Symposium are to:

  • The goal is to deliver an Art and Cultural event that transcended typical art fairs, delivers international attention to the City of Boynton Beach and educated and engaged a diverse audience about public art.
  • Celebrate the dynamic and compelling aspects of today’s kinetic art to the general public, public art professionals, as well as art and museum curators, and gallerists.
  • Build public and private interest in collecting and/or commissioning kinetic art through exposure to its rich historical context and through exhibitions of its various contemporary forms.
  • Motivate educators to incorporate kinetic art into the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum. The importance of adding “art” to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is to utilize both sides of the brain and to make learning “fun.”
  • Stimulate creative applications of various technologies in kinetic art, including “green” technologies in concert with the City’s Green Building Program.
  • Create a highly visible, bi-annual, international event that nurtures an exciting contemporary art form, while stimulating the local economy, creating an important cultural destination, and revitalizing a local community.
