“ArtiGras’ spent many years in Palm Beach Gardens both at the Gardens Mall location and off of RCA Blvd. We are thrilled to be back and couldn’t have asked for a better location in the Gardens North County District Park,” said Noel Martinez, CEO and President of the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. “ArtiGras is an economic driver in the North County area with an impact of more than $2.8 million. With all the current construction on Central Boulevard, the timing was right for the return of the festival to Gardens.”

Palm Beach County has begun road construction at and past the intersection of Central Boulevard and University Boulevard in Jupiter at the exact location of where ArtiGras has been staged for two decades. This presented ArtiGras organizers with a challenge, and it was decided that a change of venue was needed. After a thorough search, an alternate location in the City of Palm Beach Gardens at the Gardens North County District Park was found.

“Art has long been a big part of our City’s identity. That dedication has been showcased in many ways over the years, so this is a great fit,” said Palm Beach Gardens Mayor Carl Woods. “We couldn’t be more excited to be the host city for ArtiGras and we look forward to not only welcoming our residents and visitors, but also providing a platform for artists who need our support.”

“Open Heart” by Kaitlynn Gallagher

When Kaitlynn Galligher and Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report met, we knew Kaitlynn’s gift is how she captures the eyes, understanding that they have so much to tell us!  A self-taught artist, Kaitlynn specializes in portraits, hence “Katecameo Art”.

“Flourish” by Kaitlynn Gallagher

Kaitlynn’s style combines elements from traditional art, along with modern techniques and themes. She tells us, “While I paint a broad spectrum of subjects, a large portion of my work is portraits because I believe the face has so much to tell. My goal as an artist is to capture the story, emotion, and tone of a person or scene in my work”.

“Divine Divide” by Kaitlynn Galligher

Kaitlynn’s passion for art started at a young age, and she was immediately drawn to portraiture which has over the years culminated in a unique style. She is heavily influenced by the Romantic era as well as Byzantine art, and these influences combined with modern technique produce a one-of-a-kind look. Her work evokes emotion and story. Whether it be the portrait of a loved one or a fine art piece, the depth is ever-present. Her work explores color and eye contact in a such a way to evoke emotion from the viewer, to connect them to the subject and their story.

Kaitlynn Galligher “Katecameo Art” lives in Martin County, FL, where she is active in the Martin Artisans Guild. Kaitlynn will be showing her work at ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival in the Emerging Artists category.

“Flowers”, Linocut by Bill Farran

It all started in 1968 with the need for a quick gift. Bill Farran made a woodcut, and framed it. After that, he created a woodcut or linocut each Jewish New Year. His two children were announced to the world via woodcuts. As the years passed and postage increased, Jewish New Year Cards became less frequent.

BillFarranscha011

“Klezmer Singer, Elizabeth Schwartz” by Bill Farran

Bill tells The Rickie Report, “Then in 2011 two things happened. First, I made a Jewish New Card and posted it on Youtube for my friends and family. In the past I incorporated the usual images; apples and honey, views of the Jerusalem skyline, Chassids dancing, men holding the torah or blowing the shofer. In 2012, I made a linocut Jewish New Year Card of the Gvozdetz wooden synagogue (Gwoździec, Poland is now Hvfzdets, Ukraine). It must have been fate”.

Jewish New Year Linocut by Bill Farran

Bill met a group of men in Century Village who were members of the woodcarving club. They were a mixed group, liberals and conservatives, religious Jews and non-religious Jews, Americans and Canadians. “I decided to make a Jewish New Years video, as I would carve and print my linocuts with them each Tuesday morning. I never did make the video. As one thing always leads to another, before I knew it I’d created over 20 Wooden Synagogue linocuts, spent untold hours researching and learning about Eastern European history, had entered shows, and began to speak about “Lost Treasures: Wooden Synagogues of Eastern Europe”.

“My wooden synagogue series has become a labor of love. It brings together many aspects of myself. My love of history and geography, my love affair with Jewish genealogy, my love of art, and my love of my wife who helps me research and write”.

Bill Farran Novyy Yarychiv linocut

Wooden Synagogue of Novyy Yarychiv, Ukraine by Bill Farran

TRR: Take us through the process of a linocut:

BF:

A linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing can be done by hand or with a press.

The process begins with finding a photo or drawing of a wooden synagogue. They were all destroyed by the end of World War II, and very few images have survived. We research the history of the towns or shetles, to learn about the synagogue, how the people lived and finally how the Jewish presence came to an end. We often become very emotional, but it is my way of not forgetting the past. Then I transfer the image to a linoleum block and carve. I work backwards, only “what I leave behind” prints. The next stage is to make a print from the block. I have to ink the block and place a sheet of acid free paper over it and burnish the image. All my prints are hand printed. Each print is ever so slightly different and I create limited editions.

Bill explains, “My artistic focus and inspiration flow from two sources. First, I love my medium, block printing. The feel of the wood or linoleum under the carving tools transports me to another plain. The process of working backwards and in reverse is an enjoyable challenge. In block printing one has to remove surface, leaving behind the surface that will accept the ink and print. When adding color a second block has to be carved. Hand printing in itself is an art”.

“Second, I love my subject love – the wooden synagogues of Eastern Europe and their importance in Jewish cultural history. Depicting them as linocuts and woodcuts, began with creating a simple Jewish new year’s card has become a journey reinventing my life. Wooden synagogues are gone from Eastern Europe, victims of fire, war, old age and the Holocaust. Through art I try to bring back these wonderful Jewish wooden synagogues, to give us a glimpse of the past”.

TRR:  How did you get started creating your art work?

 BF:

I needed a quick last minute gift for my Mom and decided to make a wood cut. I based it on Vincent Van Gogh’s Postman Joseph Roulin. Everyone said it looked like a rabbi, so I used it as a Jewish New Year Card. After that card I made a woodcut or linocut each Jewish New Year.

Commemorative Poster

The ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival is proud to announce painter Kelly Tracht from Jupiter, FL., has been selected as this year’s commemorative artist poster artist. Tracht’s piece, title “Sailing Sailfish”, is bright, lively and uses the sailfish to reference South Florida living. The piece also pays homage to Tracht’s hometown, with the nautical letters on the flag bunting spelling out ‘Jupiter’.

ArtiGras 2014 Commemorative Poster by Kelly Tracht

Kelly tells us, “Our coastal town of Jupiter has always felt a bit like an American Riviera to me, and after watching a classic movie this summer set in the Cote d’Azur, I was inspired to create an iconic painting that would express this connection”.   Tracht was an ArtiGras Emerging Artist in 2012 and has juried into the festival two times since her first show.   She shares, “I took influences from the classic posters of the French Riviera which are full of punchy color, iconic use of imagery, and coastal fun and designed a painting that would showcase the bounty of the ocean as well as a passion for boating found here in Jupiter.”

Though formally trained as an architect, Tracht’s painting career really started to blossom in 1997, when she took a year sabbatical on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. Inspired by island living, Tracht painted al fresco landscapes and seascapes experimenting with an expressive, painterly style. As she started to sell her  paintings to European tourists and foreign dignitaries, her work quickly gained notoriety. Tracht was invited by the German owner of The Aquarium Club, a stylish beach side resort in Grenada, to hold a season-long exhibition of her work.

In 2006, Tracht painted the cover for the Junior League of the Palm Beaches cookbook Worth Tasting, a book that she named, helped research, write and conceptualize. Bloomingdales invited her to exhibit at their 2007 Artrageous event, and in 2012, Tracht was awarded the prestigious President’s Purchase Award at SunFest.

The 2014 ArtiGras poster will be available for purchase online at www.artigras.org or in the ArtiGras Merchandise Booth at the festival. Patrons can visit Tracht in the Merchandise Booth at ArtiGras where she will be signing posters for patrons on Saturday, February 15 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and again on Monday, February 17 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

EMERGING ARTISTS

The Rickie Report encourages artists of all mediums to apply to ArtiGras as an emerging artist, if they have not experienced this type of large show before.  Only eleven emerging artists were chosen for this year’s event.  We hope you take the time to stop by each of their displays and speak with them about their artwork and creativity!  The emerging artists are:  Amber Palomres, Robin Neary, Florida Palm Fish Art, DeJaVu Glass Design, Dane Stensen, Makai Project LLC, Kristian Charnick, Larry Hughes, Robert Mayes, The Little Whale and George Darrell.

Amber Palomares

Amber Palomares grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.   She is an avid nature lover, enjoys gardening, exploring parks, beaches and historical towns.  This appreciation of nature began at an early age when she fished and camped on Padre Island Texas.   Amber also accompanied her mother on trips to local National Wildlife Refuges where she delighted in following nature trails and bird watching.    Her full understanding for the outdoors can be seen in her paintings.   She and her husband, John, moved from Texas to Palm Beach Gardens, FL in the mid 90s, leaving a couple of years to live on James Island near Charleston, South Carolina. Palm Beach Gardens is where they call home now and where Amber paints both en plein air (outdoors from life) and in her studio.

Amber discovered her passion for painting in her forties  and has immersed herself in studying oil and acrylic painting techniques through art courses and instructional demonstrations.
Her paintings are light-filled, happy and can be described as being peaceful and whispy.  She works in both oils and acrylics and uses glazing and impasto techniques to create depth and a three dimensional quality to her work.
"Shrimp Boats"

“Shrimp Boats”

Amber loves painting water, sunsets and sunrises so you will often find a  stream, marsh, seashore or even a sparkling water fountain in her artwork . She is proud to say that one of her sunset seascape paintings can be found in the guest rooms of the Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort.  As an emerging artist, she is dedicated and passionate about using her gift for painting and hopes that her paintings will continue to bring joy to people.  With every visit to her easel, Amber continues to develop her own unique representational impressionist style. Amber is a member of the American Impressionist Society and Plein Air Florida.
