Jennifer Love Gironda: Artist, Teacher, Inspirer Talks About Showing Gratitude Through Creativity

When Jennifer Love Gironda witnessed the devastation of the Bahamas from hurricane Dorian, she felt the need to do more than provide much-needed basic supplies for daily living.  A visionary artist who brings her heart and soul to every project she touches, Jennifer also considered the survivors’ emotional state.  Using scraps of fabrics from her multiple sewing enterprises, plus beads, she created heart-shaped ornaments.   When her Lake Worth High School art students, friends on FaceBook (including me), and neighbors heard about this, everyone wanted to get involved!  The Rickie Report shares this story on Thanksgiving , to show that gratitude includes creativity and artwork from the heart. Jennifer, you bring the “heart” in ART!

ON  BEING  THANKFUL:

heartBEAD  With Jennifer Love Gironda

For the last eight years, Jennifer Love Gironda has completed a piece of art every singe day, with over 2800 daily pieces as of today!  When she saw the devastation of the Bahamas from hurricane Dorian, she decided to hand sew and bead hearts for her September, 2019 daily art project.  Feeling the need to do more, she set up a Facebook fundraiser to benefit the National Association of the Bahamas Inc to help those impacted by hurricane Dorian.

Jennifer tells The Rickie Report, “For each donation of $25,  I created a hand-sewn heart.  Most of the front fabrics were cotton fabrics that I hand dyed, with some extra fabric pieces used for variety.  The backing fabrics are vintage kimono fabrics I purchased in Japan. Each piece includes hand beaded details, some shells.  The wings are a mix of vintage lace/bridal veil fabric and curtain sheer samples. I raised a total of $1270 in fundraiser donations, with additional donations for shipping costs and even some material donations”!

Jennifer received 32 separate donations from ten states (CA, FL, GA, KY, MA, NC, NY, TN, TX and VA) and ended up making a total of 60 hearts to send to her donors and contributors.  She shares, “The spirit of giving was felt by my Lake Worth High School students, who were inspired to sew their own hearts!

Hundreds of hand-sewn hearts

“My students completed one batch of 60 and then another batch of almost 100.  These were directly delivered to school children in Abaco by Annita McKnight. My students’ handmade hearts are in the colors of the Bahamian flag and are a service learning project, not part of the fundraisers, just made directly for the people impacted by the hurricane, to let them know that they are in our thoughts”.  Jennifer Love Gironda is an art teacher at Lake Worth High School (Advanced Placement classes, 3D-1, Fashion Club). She earned her MAEd and is a National Board Certified Art Educator.

World Wide Call For 2D Artworks To Benefit Youth Aliyah Rescue Programs. Deadline is September 15, 2019

Since 1934, Hadassah sponsored Youth Aliyah programs have given over 300,000 young people from 80 lands a new path to a successful future.  Hadassah fundraises for schools, dorms, clubhouses, playgrounds, emotional support systems, counseling, education, art activities, and athletics by promoting Youth Aliyah donation cards and certificates.  The organization is seeking entries for new images and has initiated a Call For Art.  The Rickie Report shares the details here.  We urge you to share this call! Deadline is September 15, 2019.

Nearly a third of Israel’s children live in poverty, according to a 2014 report by the National Council for the Child in Israel. In addition, more than 450,000 children suffer from high-risk situations such as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, learning disability without access to proper resources, or a lack of basic rights.

The Hadassah-supported Meir Shfeyah, Ramat Hadassah Szold, and Hadassah Neurim Youth Aliyah Villages serve students who have been unsuccessful in other educational frameworks and are at risk of being abandoned to the streets.  Young immigrants and at-risk native Israelis receive not only shelter and food, but counseling, education, and other supportive services in our youth villages. From Hebrew-language lessons and classes on Jewish heritage to athletics and art, Youth Aliyah students receive the help and attention they need to develop into productive members of Israeli society.

Youth Aliyah Child Rescue continues to play a role in the absorption of young newcomers to Israel, particularly from the former Soviet Union and Africa. In addition, the organization offers a second chance to Israeli youth who have been designated ‘at risk’ by child care authorities.  Children in the care of Youth Aliyah are housed in five youth residential villages in Israel. The villages include schools, dorms, clubhouses and playgrounds, and offer emotional support, education, developmental training and extra-curricular activity.

The children come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and often have serious emotional, psychological and behavioral difficulties. Many come from disadvantaged, low income or dysfunctional families, very often single-parent families. They are often at risk because of poverty, neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse, drug or alcohol abuse, mental illness, homelessness or delinquent behaviour. Other children suffer from cancer and need respite care, while others come from families that have been victims of terror.

Born in the Republic of Panama to Chinese parents, MaiYap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas. Within the walls of her parent’s home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Once outside these walls, her senses were overcome by the amazing colors, sounds and energy of the Tropics.

“Happy For You” by MaiYap

She tells The Rickie Report, “Panama provided a bustling backdrop of exciting people, places, and music. Most importantly, its natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration to imagine and create my magnificent flowers and unique landscapes. It also gave me the courage to voice my concerns and fears about our planet’s welfare through my powerful environmental abstracts”.

“Boat at Dawn” by MaiYap

MaiYap asks herself: “Who am I? Where am I going? How can I help the most”?

She says, “The constant search for my true identity, my place in the world and the struggle to preserve our planet are at the heart of all my art pursuits. Painting very detailed and colorful flowers has helped me to reconcile my Chinese background with the vibrant Panamanian world. The wish to anchor myself in this rapid ever-changing world drove me to study the subject of impermanence while depicting the passing clouds and difficult atmospheres. Through the practice of mindfulness meditation I continue to grow while trying to make sense of it all.  My environmental abstracts are the answer to one of my deepest concerns and where life inquiry continues to thrive”.

“Anecdote of an Inquisitive Mind” by MaiYap
