Gores’ lush collage portraits capture an escapist tranquility, a nostalgic yet contemporary feeling of the good life by the coast.  In his newest body of work for Gallery 14, Gores takes a deeper exploration into his dreamlike surrealism.  New subjects include a chess board, a vinyl record and a sweet treat or two, in addition to the floating swimmers, shoes and cocktails for which he is known.  At first we see fashionable scenes of tropical bliss, but, closer inspection of his collage technique reveals an alluring spectrum of elements used to build his pictures.

“Sea of Tranquility” by Derek Gores

For this show, Gores has used many objects and textures inspired by life in Vero Beach.  Hundreds of snapshots of local flowers and foliage, shells and waves, vintage postcards, Lilly Pulitzer patterns, and so many more hidden gems can be discovered at each glance.  His sense of color has really gone next level this time – a nearly neon tropical wave of joy.  His title, Piece of Mind, is a playful nod to the artist’s approach.  Gores is a specialist in being present.  He explores, gathers elements and inspirations, and combines them to form a sort of zen narrative.  The story is on the canvas for us to piece together.  His client list includes Tag Heuer, Loews South Beach, E! Entertainment, and more.  He was honored to be the first ever Artist in Residence at the Hotel Bel-Air, where Marilyn Monroe had her last photo shoot.

“Makin’ Plans” by Melissa   Mastrangelo   &   Horacio   Lertora

Dorothy Napp Schindel tells The Rickie Report, “As we celebrate 15 years in the downtown, historic Arts District, Gallery 14 is excited to welcome the new Season in November 2022, with the return of the ever popular husband and wife team Melissa Mastrangelo and Horacio Lertora.  The duo who have continually brought smiles to the faces of fans and collectors from near and far, like to say that they are spouses sharing the same canvas in life and art”.

“Fresh Wild Blueberries” by Melissa   Mastrangelo   &   Horacio   Lertora

This partnership has resulted in a successful collaboration for almost 20 years.  For their current body of work, Florida Fresh – which consists of pop art acrylic paintings on canvas – they dove backwards into their past, where the art of sign making was more prevalent in their work.  Among their other iconic images, they have combined the art of fruit crate labels with a nostalgic look at vintage swimmers and divers – referencing the regions historic fruit farming.

“Pink Motel” by Melissa  Mastrangelo   &   Horacio  Lertora

Having started out initially as sign makers, it is only natural that they often incorporate typography into their art.  According to Melissa: “We have always enjoyed combining patterns, imagery and text and appreciate the playful way it all interacts together.”  This bright and  colorful show, filled with retro imagery, will  run from November 1 – 25.

Judy Burgarella spends a lot of time designing her class so that people will not fail.  When they sign up, she sends them a lined pattern, and in class she shows them how to get that pattern onto the canvas.  She explains, “This is not a drawing class, it’s a painting class. Drawing takes years to learn.  Even if some of them do not have a “masterpiece,” they will have learned a lot of tips and tricks to add to their knowledge of painting”.  Many of her students have said that they have learned more in her class than any other class they have taken.  “For 3 hours, I never shut up.  I am hoping to get many other artists onboard to teach this class so that we have diversity and variety to offer”.

“Portrait on Palette” Private Commission by Judy Burgarella

Judy Burgarella tells The Rickie Report, “My career in business involved mostly administration/ secretarial work, and printing and editing. As my passion to pursue art became stronger I began writing and designing for arts & crafts magazines, in addition to running my own secretarial service. I eventually started an art club, the “Shoreline Plein Air Painters” in Connecticut”.

In 2005, Judy and her husband Bob moved to Florida, and she soon joined the Vero Beach Art Club and other local arts organizations, where she became very active, helping out with shows and wherever her skills were needed. In 2012 her daughter Robin and family moved to Sebastian, and Judy currently helps her with her real estate business staging homes and using her own paintings in the décor.
