The Wellington Art Society (WAS) is thrilled to begin its 42^nd year with their first event of the season on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. The meeting takes place at the Wellington Community Center with a meet and greet followed by a member spotlight and brief meeting. Heather Bergstrom has spent a lifetime pursuing her passion and skill as an artist. Her favorite mediums are graphite, charcoal and acrylic paint. She loves to tell stories with her art, painting poignant scenes which translate into universal feelings of contentment, nostalgia, or joie de vivre.

Heather is originally from New Haven, Connecticut where she worked in the public school system. Several years ago, she and her family moved to Florida where she got a job at a local private school. Throughout her career, she never lost her enthusiasm for art. When she wasn’t working, she was creating. In fact, during her lunchbreaks she was often found drawing in the teachers’ lounge. As more and more people started asking to buy her art, it dawned on her that this might be a nice way to make a little extra cash. In her free time, she began slowly building a portfolio of works, a website and a social media presence.

Then the global pandemic forced schools to shut down, leaving many people, including Heather, without a job. Though this was a difficult time, Heather saw it as an opportunity to grow her art side hustle into a full-time career: A dream that she previously thought would have to wait until retirement.

Around this time, Heather met master artist, Laurie Snow Hein, through the Wellington Art Society. Laurie appreciated Heather’s passion and business sense and hired her practically on the spot as her assistant. Heather says, “meeting Laurie was providential. I have learned so much from her experience as a professional artist and have applied that knowledge to my own art business.” Now Heather enjoys sharing her art marketing expertise with other creatives.

Heather Bergstrom is an active Board member of the Wellington Art Society and serves on the Marketing Team. In 2020, she received the People’s Choice Award at the South Florida Fair and in 2021 she received the People’s Choice Award for the “Wonders of Art” Exhibition at Wellington Community Center. The Wellington Art Society is thrilled to present Art Scholarships to two deserving young artists at their May 11, 2022 meeting. The meeting and presentation will take place at the Wellington Community Center, 12150 Forest Hill Blvd, Wellington. They will open with a meet and greet at 5:30 pm, followed by the member spotlight and a brief meeting. The meeting will conclude with the presentation of scholarships to two very talented high school seniors. The public is invited to attend. COVID-19 protocols will be observed. The students who will be receiving scholarships this year are Ashley Forkey of Saint Andrew’s School and Sofia Vega of Boca Raton Community High School. The scholarships will be presented by WAS Scholarship Chair, Liza Karsai. Each student will have the opportunity to share about their work and plans for the future. The Wellington Art Society (WAS) has been supporting the advancement of the arts in the Palm Beach County community since 1981 with the intent to encourage young artists to pursue careers in the fine arts, provide programming that expands art in public places, and make art accessible within the community daily.

The WAS Scholarship Program was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to talented young artists for art related College and University expenses and tuition costs.  Over the past twenty-one years, WAS has awarded over $120,000 in scholarships to some of the brightest and most creative students within our community. Past recipients of the WAS Scholarship have gone on to become educators, illustrators, authors, curators, artistic directors, professional artists and art advocates.

Stained glass artist Marcia Greene is originally from New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture and jewelry design from SUNY Albany, NY in 1971. When Marcia began working with glass in 1978, she found it to be the ideal medium for her, as it incorporated the three-dimensional aspect of sculpture with the detail and glitter of jewelry making, and she has made it the focus of her art ever since. Besides utilizing thousands of types of glass, Marcia enhances many pieces with metal accents and embellishments and other media such as geodes, crystals, stones, and shells. Marcia says, for her, “design inspiration is everywhere: nature, real life, photos, [my own] imagination,” and her style can run the gamut from Victorian to modern abstract, making each work a different and fascinating experience.

In addition to being an artist, Marcia is a Registered Nurse Board Certified in Psychiatry and Mental Health and currently works in a local Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facility. Marcia is part of a therapeutic treatment team that encourages and guides the clients with substance abuse and mental health issues to use various artistic mediums to create their own works of art to work through their issues. She believes that art and the act of creating has a healing effect on people and is grateful to be able to use her knowledge and talents to help others.

“On The Way To Georges” by Ted Matz

 

 

 

Ted majored in painting at Eastern Michigan University and is a graduate from Kendall College of Art and Design.  He has worked in design related positions with Jacobson’s Store, Inc., Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor.  Ted is currently the President of Ted Matz Fine Art, Inc., teaching classes and workshops in both abstract and realism. He offers classes in oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, and plein air painting at Easel Art Supply in Lake Park, FL. He also conducts private mentoring sessions, in-studio classes and workshops, as well as online classes.

Ted has previously taught at the Boca Museum School of Art in Boca Raton, Florida and the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. Domestically he has held art and design workshops in Michigan, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont, and has conducted international workshops in Cortona, Farindola and Florence, Italy; Paris and Arles, France; as well as Havana, Trinidad, Vinales, and Santa Clara, Cuba.  

 

 

 

“Bees Coming Home” by Ted Matz

 

 

When asked where he draws his inspiration from, he says “I love nature and the beauty that the natural world gives to us, therefore I have a very strong desire to record as much of it as possible… for future generations.”  Ted employs various mediums including oil, pastel, watercolor, gouache, and acrylics. He works in both realism and abstraction. Ted enjoys being open to a range of mediums and styles, giving him the freedom to choose those that best represent the subject for each piece he creates.

Ted was the co-founder and past President of The New Studio for the Visual Arts in Jupiter, Florida and previously held the position of Chair of Painting and Drawing at the Lighthouse Art Center Gallery and School of Art in Tequesta, Florida. He also founded and chaired the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Plein Air Festival in Tequesta/Jupiter, Florida and acted as consultant to the 4^th Annual Festival.  The event draws 35 nationally recognized juried plein air artists from across the country and Europe.

Ted’s next exhibition will be January 4 through 31, 2022 and will show his Abstract Landscape work at the Eissey Gallery of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens. He has had his work shown in feature articles in Plein Air Magazine and is currently in the December/January issue.

Manon Sander

 

The Art Society is thrilled to have Manon Sander as their guest speaker for this meeting. Manon, born and raised in Berlin, Germany, holds an MBA, and began her career in finance, but always pursued creative outlets such as mosaics and jewelry making in her free time. She moved with her husband to the United States in 1995 and started a family. Since her banking career was at a natural pause, she began to follow her passion for art. She spent the next decade attending workshops, an atelier, and learning from well-known impressionists, developing her own contemporary, recognizable style. Manon says that, while the subject of a painting is inspiring, “it is to me of greater importance to capture the effect of light on a subject and the feeling it evokes as I put down my impressions in interesting patterns, luminous color, and juicy brush strokes”.

Today Manon has made a name for herself with nationally recognized shows, awards and teaching engagements. She recently placed 3^rd in the overall competition at Sedona Paint Out as well as 3^rd in the quick draw competition and was awarded lifelong signature status this year by the reputable National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society.

Manon’s work can be seen at Contemporary Art on Park in Winter Park, FL, as well as at Lost Art Gallery in St. Augustine, FL, and the Village Art Studios in Tequesta, FL. She also is participating in the Faculty Exhibition at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, FL which runs until December 11^th. 

 

 

“Kaleidoscope” by Manon Sander

 

 

Manon teaches a weekly plein air class through the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta and occasionally offers Zoom online workshops. She will hold a two-day studio workshop on Amelia Island on January 28-29. Manon also enjoys organizing artist retreats and workshops such as her Tuscany Retreat next spring, and Vermont and Santa Fe in the Fall. She loves planning it down to the smallest detail to make it a fantastic experience for everyone who travels with her. The Wellington Art Society (WAS) features speaker, Kimberly Perry of Posh Design Studio which represents local, national, and international artists to a VIP list of celebrity art collectors. The Wednesday, November 10 meeting is at the Wellington Community Center. The public is invited to this free event. Please note that CDC guidelines will be observed. To honor the WAS 40th Anniversary, a new exhibit, “CELEBRATION” will be available as a virtual art show NOW through December 31. Proceeds from sales support WAS Scholarship Fund. Kimberly Perry Owner and Curator of Posh Design Studio

 

 

Kimberly Perry is the owner and curator of Posh Design Studio in Delray Beach, Florida, where she represents over 30 local, national and international artists.  Posh is a thriving art gallery that services all types of homes, businesses and interior designers. Her gallery consists of original paintings, sculptures, glass art, fine art photography, home décor and unique gifts.  She has an extensive VIP List of celebrity art collectors across the country.

Kimberly is also an Abstract Artist and a Professional Color Consultant. She specializes in the psychological and physiological effects of color on human beings. She creates colorful solutions for architectural and interior design projects. Kimberly is the daughter of world-renowned artist, DeVon Cunningham, who is featured in the Smithsonian Institute.  Her obsession with art began at the age of five, when she attended her dad’s first art exhibition. She has spent a lifetime attending art shows, festivals and art galleries across the country with her dad. 

 

 

Kimberly holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Arts and Science from Michigan State University. She is constantly researching and developing her skills as an art consultant and curator for her gallery. In honor of its 40^th anniversary, the Wellington Art Society is pleased to announce the first virtual art show of the season, “CELEBRATION”, a juried virtual art show showing now through December 31, 2021. This exhibit features ten artists and 35 original works of art by WAS members, including mixed media art on canvas, black and white photography, sculptures and an array of paintings, using various mediums.

Celebration Virtual Art Show is a free on-line event which will be presented through Kunstmatrix, which is a unique and innovative platform that enables artists to create beautiful and realistic 3D versions of their artwork, displayed in a sophisticated virtual exhibition space. Visitors can view artwork one of several ways, including moving themselves around the exhibit using the arrows that appear on screen or by using the cursor. A guided tour is also available as an option.

It will open with a meet and greet followed by the member spotlight and a brief meeting. Nancy Tilles

 

 

Local artist Nancy Tilles is known for her oils and portraits, which hang in public and private collections throughout the country. She exhibits her work in nationally recognized art shows across Florida. Nancy recently completed a commissioned portrait of beloved cardiac surgeon, Dr. Malcolm Dorman, which is installed at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, FL. 

 

 

“Adam and Eve” by Nancy Tilles

 

Along with her portrait work, Nancy has created bodies of work representing flowers, underwater scenes, and tropical art in mural-sized triptychs. Nancy’s newest series is called “Figures in the Ficus”. She says, “I am fascinated with Banyan and Ficus trees…. I usually begin these paintings with a unique tree and weave the figures into its structure.” At first glance, the viewer sees a lovely tree, but after a while, the whimsical human figures within the tree are realized, giving these paintings a truly magical quality.

Nancy is presently teaching painting to adults at Easel Art Supply and at the City of Palm Beach Gardens. She is passionate about sharing her love of painting with her students. Nancy is also an active member of the Wellington Art Society, whose members consist of dedicated professional artists, up and coming artists, art lovers and supporters. The Wellington Art Society is thrilled to announce their first in-person art exhibitions since the COVID-19 Pandemic began: “Resurgence” and “Rekindle”. The public is invited to the opening reception and sale for both exhibitions on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, from 5:00-7:00 pm. “Resurgence” will be at Wellington City Hall and “Rekindle” will be the Wellington Community Center. Two venues – one great night! Meet the artists and see a live demo. There will be door prizes and refreshments to enjoy. 

 

The Wellington Art Society is featuring 26 artists with over 100 original works of art in these two venues which are conveniently located in buildings adjoined by a walkway. All artwork is for sale and a portion of the proceeds goes toward WAS Scholarship and Outreach Programs.
