“This is How I Feel” focuses on issues of sexual abuse and assault as well as domestic violence.  Along with the widespread impact of the Covid-19 crises, statistics have alarmingly increased and the dialogue has become critical.

Susan Buzzi tells The Rickie Report, “My main objective with this photo documentary is of course, to bring awareness, given my careers in law enforcement, education, counseling and longtime advocacy; however, to deliver the message visually and promote it through the arts – this is the challenge and my distinct honor.  And, every so often, I have the extraordinary opportunity to bring the voices to the surface for everyone to hear.  I’ve provided the facts – the alarming statistics (which are underrepresented due to not originating as domestic-related calls and those that are simply not reported at all) – and I’ve also outlined the warning signs, scenarios, and life-saving contacts. Indeed, I am grateful to the Broward Cultural Division for their support of this project and to the Sunrise Civic Center Gallery for hosting the exhibition”.

As an arts educator and coach practitioner working with victims of crime, Susan often uses expressive therapies to overcome adversity and to build confidence and trust.  “For this exhibit, I chose the traditional photography format at the onset of my shoots; developed the film by hand in the darkroom; and later often combined digital manipulation in order to distort identities and locations.  With these techniques, I am able to preserve the basic photographic process of capturing specific moments prior to the shutter trip and then create new layers to enhance and extend the imagery.”

“Trapped” by Susan S. Buzzi

The actual process of healing through art while addressing the metaphors for the unspeakable and raising awareness, has also become a valuable vehicle and extraordinary opportunity for recovery and social change.  This presentation is dedicated to ALL victims, survivors and their families.  Susan shares, ” Each of these individuals have overcome great suffering, pain, darkness, and disappointment….and now have transitioned to healthier and safer places.  I want to remind them that you are stronger than you know!  I am most grateful to the Broward Cultural Division for support of this important project and to the Sunrise City Center Gallery for welcoming this exhibit. By doing so, you contribute to the social consciousness of our communities.”

These are uncomfortable, yet necessary conversations taking place across the country.  We ALL must learn the warning signs to be observant and vigilant.

Domestic Violence is commonly perpetrated by men against women; however, females have also been known to exhibit violent behavior against their male partners.  Approximately five percent of males are killed by their intimate partners.  Each year, approximately 500,000 women are physically assaulted or raped by an intimate partner compared to 100,000 men. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, statistics show 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and 1 in 4 men (28.5%) will experience rape, physical violence or stalking in their lifetime.

Rape is primarily perpetrated by men, while women engage in other forms of violence against men. 26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, in comparison to 29% of heterosexual men. When considering male same sex relationships, studies show approximately 26% of men called the police for assistance after experiencing near-lethal violence.

“Second Thoughts” by Susan S. Buzzi

Domestic violence and abuse affects our children, teens, elders, both males and females, and our LGBTQIA+ communities.  When counseling victims of crime, assault, stalking and survivors of abuse, I incorporate expressive therapies which often include reflective writing and art programming.  These methods, when combined with traditional treatment, have become invaluable for rehabilitation; they provide a comfortable approach as they relieve anxiety, depression and stress; rebuilds confidence and self-image; calms fears; and encourages the expression of feelings.

Susan sees herself as a social barometer with the goal to achieve “a consciousness” for the viewer. She says, “I think of art as a powerful tool with the potential to heal, protect, inspire, motivate, reveal, and impassion us all. Opening the imagination and encouraging it to soar creates avenues for participation; and surely, strengthening participation leads to commitment in everything we do”.

LGBTQIA+ individuals are found to be far more vulnerable and at risk to domestic violence and abuse than those engaged in heterosexual relationships. Reasons often include lack of reporting incidents and skewed statistics; fear of retaliation from their partner; judgement; and embarrassment in the community. Most recent statistics show that 43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women have experienced rape, physical violence, and/ or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime; as opposed to 35% of heterosexual women.  (Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 2020)

“As an artist and educator, I feel it is my responsibility to create meaningful dialogue in what I do, and always to provide integrity and authenticity. The opportunity to strive to preserve our humanity, conquer adversity, and foster an appreciation and understanding for, and through the arts, is my privilege”.  Buzzi will also be presenting work to the Broward Commission in October and accepting a Proclamation for National Domestic Violence Month as a member of the Broward Commission on the Status of Women.

Additional services, including alternative medicine and holistic approaches/treatments, need to be made more available for everyone – without stigma or shame –  to ensure safe transitions and referrals for shelter and medical and legal services.  It must be a unified approach: combining education, wellness and healthcare, the law and social services, and most importantly, our communities that will begin the process of healing ….

In September of 2021, Congress passed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act which launched this past July in Broward County.  “988” is now available to those in crisis or experiencing emotional distress for intervention and assistance.

“Time and memory are the main topics of my investigation and of the idea that our personal and collective memories are flexible and can be shaped over time” ~ Yochi Yakir-Avin

Many pieces show a QR video and audio code, which the viewers are encouraged to scan to enjoy the complete experience.

Yochi Yakir-Avin tells The Rickie Report, ” I started working on The Memory Project three years ago. At the time I did not know that it would become such an important part of my practice, and most certainly I didn’t understand I have so much to express and elaborate on. One thing led to the other, and The memory project is now in its 4th phase, with “THE MEMORY CATCHER”, displayed here, at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery”.

She goes on to explain, “Time and memory are the main topics of my investigation and of the idea that our personal and collective memories are flexible and can be shaped over time.  The complexity and intricate texture of ancestral and family relationships, through fragmented memory, are at the center of my investigation”.

“Bonnet” by Yochi Yakir-Avin

Yochi created and rebuild from a repository of old archive family images, which were bitten by the teeth of time, while creating a renewed closeness to her fathers and family members, some of whom she did not know at all. “The choice of cardboard in my work comes to emphasize instability, temporality, and vulnerability and to illustrate that changes are easier to make when carrying less cargo. The temporality of material and image is even more pronounced with the choice of the sheer engraving on the boxes”.

“With the same intention I use paper in flimsy origami paper houses made from my birth certificate, or the usage of brown paper for big drawings. When working with image transfer, I was attracted to the imperfect results it gave me that resonated so well with the imperfection of memories.  In some of my work, like in the light boxes, I want to examine only the essential, and I eliminate details or environment, and concentrate on what is left, that is meaningful to me. Those pieces are “framed” in cardboard boxes to create kind of a dim room into which the viewer can peek, with a sense of a glimpse into a private place”.

“Knight” by Yochi-Yakir-Avin

Born in Poland and based in South Florida since 2014, Yochi Yakir-Avin is an award-winning figurative artist. Simultaneously American and Israeli, Yakir-Avin studied fine arts in Israel and Italy and has exhibited internationally in Italy, France, Israel and the USA.  Her work has been published and exhibited internationally.

With a focus on representation, Yakir-Avin’s works are portraits and still life painted in oil on canvas and wood. She portrays ordinary people with a variety of social backgrounds, to collect the feeling of the present moment, by touching on human experiences. She also creates mixed media wall sculptures, as well as intricate transfer pieces on paper and wood, and installations.

“Family”  by Yochi-Yakir-Avin

Conveyed via a masterfully limited palette, her subjects are framed against swathes of monochromatic color and emphasize notions of mood, place and implied narrative. Within her intimate mixed media pieces on paper and wood, the artist draws creative inspiration from her past and allows her memories to weave together to drive her practice forward. Through a tangible sense of vulnerability embedded in each of her works, the artist aims to offer hope, and striving to bring her personal point of view and to create meaningful engaging experiences that will resonate with others.

” A Good Life” Mural by Tiffany Beasi

Tiffany tells The Rickie Report, “When I start with an idea, I am inspired by music, animals and the environment around me. I paint what I see and feel. I love to create things that not only I can grow from but that will inspire others as well. Most of the time, I use acrylic paint on canvas but I do create on functional materials like shoes, skateboards, surfboards, chairs, walls and guitars”.

Growing Is Key” by Tiffany Beasi

Tiffany says, “My vivid color scheme has developed over the years from being a Florida native. The Florida landscape is bright and drowned in dynamic colors. Absorbing this eye-catching landscape has inspired my work. I don’t really stick to one subject matter just like I don’t listen to the same music or eat the same things everyday. Life is to short to paint the same thing everyday. My style is creating. When I am done with a painting, I feel a sense of self-worth and accomplishment and have a happy smile on my face”.

Melissa   Mastrangelo

Melissa Mastrangelo is originally from Upstate NY, but has found her true home here in South Florida. She graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a Bachelors in Fine Arts, and has been drawing and painting since childhood. Her work has been displayed at multiple local breweries and cafes, here in FL, most recently at Oceana Cafe in Tequesta.

Jelly Fish by Melissa Mastrangelo

Her love and passion for nature, especially the sea, is heavily reflected in her work. Her paintings mainly depict colorful sea creatures, waves, and tropical landscapes. Melissa is an avid scuba diver and paddleboarder, further adding inspiration from the natural beauty all around here. She prefers a more stylistic approach to painting, working off of photographs but adding her own personal touch. Use of vibrant colors and different textures (splatter/use of palette knife) is what makes her work unique. Her favorite medium is acrylic paint, but she also enjoys drawing with ink pens and watercoloring, which is how her zentangle creations are born.

Melissa Mastrangelo with her “Fairy Tale House” Public Art Project in W. Palm Beach, FL

Melissa also runs a “Paint and Sip” company, Mobile Masterpieces, in which she teaches acrylic on canvas. So to keep things interesting, she loves to paint on recycled guitars, decks, and boards as well. Most recently she has begun a “Porthole” series on used vinyl records with 3D printed frames.

Jen tells The Rickie Report, “Life is tough and full of negative truths. In my own life I have known poverty, instability and loss of loved ones. For me, making art fills up those dark places with light and love. My goal is to put some whimsy and light out into the world, a little of my heART.  I am inspired by the female face, by fashion, by flowing hair. I love color, and texture. My favorite artists include artists from history, such as Mucha, Klimt, Chagall, Kahlo, and Gruau. I’m also influenced by artists working today in a variety of genres, from the street art of Kailua, the altered books of Teesha Moore, the mixed media works of Sunny Carvalho, the textiles of Susan Sorrell and fashion illustrations.

“The faces I create are an ongoing narrative of the happenings of a contemporary, quirky woman who is not afraid to be happy, sad, serious or downright silly. I depict her in a variety of moods, with stretched out limbs so that she can handle her daily adventures with grace. I always opt for an exaggerated eye to maximize her expression, which is often a state of wonder at the world around her.  I explore this character through diverse styles and a variety of media within monthly themes, creating a new piece each day. Often times I will include hints of my own daily happenings, such as places I am visiting or people that I am around. While my work is spontaneous, the way in which I work- daily art within monthly themes, is very structured and organized, which gives me a sense of calm”.

Jen also has a side passion called  ‘Angel Dropping’. She leaves small angel paintings for people to find, often in places where she feel folks could really use an angel, like in the recovery or loss section of the book store. “The thought of people finding these angels, or looking at my art and it making them smile feels my heart with joy and love…I put that back into making more work”.

“I grew up in North Carolina, where I lived pretty much my whole life except for a year in San Diego, California (…moved there on a whim…that’s a good story, too!) My husband and I came to Florida in 2009 so he could pursue a doctoral degree from Florida Atlantic University. He was hired as a professor at Nova Southeastern.  My formal training is from the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. I received my BFA and MAEd from ECU, focusing on not only Art Education but also Textile studio. I have training in drawing, painting, ceramics, metals, and of course fibers. I feel in love with textiles my sophomore year of college when I was hand weaving a small tapestry…this led me to take five studios of weaving and also studios in Surface Design. Screen Printing, dye-work and hand embellishment/beadwork are my favorite textiles techniques but I always go back to my first loves, drawing and painting”.

Since earning my Master’s degree in 2009 I took time to focus on my teaching. I earned my National Board Teacher Certification in 2010 and became a successful grant writer to get materials and offer enriching experiences to my students. I currently teach high school art…and I love it! I am a member of the Palm Beach Art Educator’s Association and have been active on the Board of Directors for the Florida Art Educator’s Association. I’m also a contributor for Art Hive Magazine, where I write an article called, ‘Artin’ with the Muse’ and also work with Social Media.   When I am not teaching or working, I am making art…ALWAYS making art.  Maya Angelou said it best, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” I believe that whole-heartedly”.
