Stanford Slutsky has lived in Florida the past 38 years and is a full time working artist. Walking into the home/gallery/studio of Stanford Slutsky is like walking into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Even better, the giant sized hyper-realistic art on the walls looks good enough to eat and are calorie free! What looks like luscious chocolates are actually made of resins, rigid foam, adhesives, acrylics, a lot of imagination and some proprietary techniques that this creative has devised himself.

At 79 years young, Stanford has tapped into his creative side most of his life. Even in high school, he was winning awards for his artwork. At that time, it was for jewelry making. Later, he moved into painstakingly working on abstract geometric optical illusion  art, hand painting every minuscule perfectly measured line and angle to create unique and eye-tricking perspectives.

Slutsky decided to switch it up and revert to when he drove a Good Humor Ice Cream Truck in the summer of 1957 and being in the grocery business.  It was a throwback to good feelings, the memories of childhood. He wanted to create art that made someone smile and have that sense of nostalgia.

Stanford Slutsky offers a wide variety of food art

He accomplished this with his art that looked like chocolate bars, chocolate candies, ice cream bars, doughnuts, pizza, hamburgers, French fries, sushi and more. His latest piece is called “My Favorite Licorice.” He creates these artworks in his studio, which happens to be in his perfectly organized garage that is where the magic happens.

Slutsky has exhibited in numerous venues and participated in many national and international competitions including  the on line gallery in the UK, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art 54th annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition, (out of more than 1100 submissions by nearly 400 artists, he was one of less than 100 artists chosen to represent the best in Florida. Slutsky, was nominated to the Florida Arts Hall of Fame in 1993. His “Assorted Box of Candy” won an award at The Armory of West Palm Beach and Art in Public Places at the Palm Beach International Airport, to mention a few.  Slutsky is currently represented in two galleries: Sundook Fine Art Galleries (Delray Beach, FL), and Gallery Art at the Promenade Shops (Aventura, FL)

Art Critic, Candice Russell says, “Stanford Slutsky’s evolution as an artist has led him to a larger-than-life exploration of food, one of our most basic needs. However, not just any food has captured his fancy. Stanford harnesses the innocence of youth in the form of various sweets. People of a certain age have fond memories of the ice cream and other sweet things. Slutsky’s hyperrealism pop art food sculptures are larger than life. By enlarging the size of these snacks and desserts, the artist similarly enhances the viewer’s craving for them. If longing is a part of art, so be it”.

Stanford Slutsky, 79, of Boynton Beach, has lived in Florida for 37 years.  He creates unmistakable lifelike sculptures of the sweet ice cream treats he remembers from his youth in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. He also creates art that looks like chocolates, hamburgers, bagels and pizza, among others. After one year of college, he spent his career in the wholesale grocery business, retiring to Florida in 1983. “I’m a self-taught artist, that I believe comes from a higher power,” said Slutsky, who sports a goatee and boasts a puckish sense of humor, saying he is “the best looking artist you know.”

Stan tells The Rickie Report, “Creating food art was the natural growth of my background. Looking back at my life, driving a Good Humor ice cream truck for a summer job, being in the grocery business, my love of food, especially my love of sweet things inspired my choice of subjects. I think of my art before going to sleep and I wake up thinking of my art, and go into my studio to work on my art. “When I was a child,” Slutsky said, “there was something about the illusions magicians created that captured my imagination. I want that same vivid sense of illusions to be central in all my artwork.”

Slutsky was nominated to the Florida Arts Hall of Fame in 1993. His “Assorted Box of Candy” won an award at The Armory of West Palm Beach and Art in Public Places at the Palm Beach International Airport, Fort Lauderdale Art Museum, Coral Springs Art Museum, City of Boynton Beach to mention a few. He credits his enjoyment through his journey in life to his wife of 58 years, Kathy, and their three children: Roberta, Marlin, and Adele, and their spouses from Pittsburgh and Majorca Spain and 6 grandchildren.

Stan enjoys lime in his tequila!  Here’s a hyper-sized slice!

He said he loves to do all the grocery shopping and cook for his wife, family and friends while enjoying a drink of tequila before preparing dinner. “Cooking makes me relax,” Slutsky said. He also shares good times with his longtime friends from grade school. “In 1984, along with David Maxwell, we created and started an Arts District in downtown Hollywood, Florida, which enabled unknown but talented artists to display their works,” he said. “One Friday of each month, we held receptions that included music, and opened a theater. The public viewed and purchased the works of the many local artists and provided them the opportunity to create more pieces of art. I am proud of that accomplishment.” Slutsky credits his wife as the person he most admires. “She is honest, dependable, kind, compassionate and wonderful.

At a young age, Slutsky unearthed clay to made sculptures. In high school he won many awards for his jewelry design and creations.  He moved to Florida 34 years ago where he became a full time working and professional artist. These past years he has had numerous SOLO exhibits including the  Young at Art Museum in Davie, Fl, Coral Springs Museum of Art, The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, The Fort Lauderdale Art Institute,  and Nathan D. Rosen Museum.

Stan the Good Humor man

After focusing on and perfecting his optical illusion Art and geometric techniques, Slutsky has now moved into his new territory. His memory of the summer of 1957 when he drove a Good Humor ice cream truck (and was called “Stan the Good Humor Man”) drives his intention to stimulate and provoke a positive emotional response to our love of food.

By exaggerating the size of these snacks and desserts, the artist similarly enhances the viewer’s craving. Slutsky states, “After walking through the market, I see something sweet to create and proceed to recreate in my studio by eating, studying, feeling and smelling my new subject matter.” Slutsky then starts by taking photos, measuring, sculpting, sanding, and mixing paint colors for the mixed media construction of his artwork.

This good feelings from childhood come racing back, as you see beyond life-size pizza slices, ice cream bars dripping as they “melt”, sushi, hamburgs, and so much more.  His enjoyment is not only derived from the creative process, but from seeing the smiles on the faces of art lovers who collect his work.

When you bring the art work of Stanford Slutsky to your home or office, you automatically invite joy and whimsy to your walls and space! His artwork is precise yet spontaneous. His perceptions of the world will bring a smile to your heart and engage all of your visitors. Stan’s pieces are original one of a kind food sculptures – larger than life –  with the emphasis on confectionary things and other edibles. Slutsky says, “I am chasing the sweet things in life.”

Today Slutsky is creating three dimensional mixed media sculptures of food, one of our most basic needs. It is a flashback to earlier days of good feelings, and nostalgia with his vivid memories of childhood days. He creates art that makes us smile and have that same sense of nostalgia. Stan accomplishes this by tasting and eating what he wants to create, which will look like the hyper-realistic chocolate bars, chocolates, ice cream bars, pops, doughnuts, pizza, hamburgers, French fries, sushi and more.  He creates these artworks in his studio, which happens to be in his perfectly organized studio/garage.

What Is Pop Art?

The type of artwork that I create is Pop Art which began in the 1950s. It’s a style of art based on simple, bold images of everyday items, such as candy, ice cream dessert bars, soup cans, painted in bright colors. Pop artists created pictures of consumer product labels and packaging, photos of celebrities, comic strips, and animals. Pop art  in which commonplace objects ( candy, ice cream on a stick, comic strips, soup cans, road signs, and hamburgers) were used as subject matter and were often physically incorporated in the artwork.
The Pop Art movement represented a shift in what artists considered to be important source material. It was a movement which sought to connect fine art with the masses and involved using imagery that ordinary people could recognize and relate to in their life.

As the successor of modern art, the contemporary genre includes art produced today and dates back to a single, iconic movement. While Pop Art began in the 1950s and was popularized in the 1960s, several iconic artists today continue to keep it alive through their exciting and widely beloved works and to name a few artists. Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Stanford Slutsky, Tom Wesselmann, Jack Newman, Milton Avery, Romero Britto, Chuck Close, Peter Blake, Steve Kaufman, Damien Hirst, Terry Frost, Charles Fazzino, Doug Bloodworth, Yuroz, Wayne Thiebaud, Alexandra Nechita, Dan Meyer, Peter Max, Sol Lewitt, Paul Kostabi, Jeff Koons.  In addition, let’s not forget Banksy,  John Chamberlain,  George Condo, Willem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Kaws, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and many others.

Stan Shares A Proprietary Technique~

Born in 1941 in Pittsburgh, PA. Stanford has created a plethora of artworks in various mediums.  In the summer of 1957, Slutsky drove a Good Humor Ice Cream Truck, where he was known as “Stan the Good Humor Man”.   He moved from his insanely detailed abstract optical illusion works, to his life long journey with food with an emphasis on sweet things. Prior to creating, he tells The Rickie Report, “I must sample the real thing and only then I begin the process to build, construct, sculpt, sand and paint”. Stan has an innate reverence for the things we eat.  He says, “Food brings people together and there is no better way to celebrate life. We take for granted the aesthetically pleasing and seductive look of food. I like to create art that can lure, charm, tease, disarm and surprise”. His sculptures bring viewers to a reminiscent state so that they can communicate with their inner selves in a more honest and direct way – all the way back to their youth. He activates the hunger people have for the things that give them pleasure and forces them to surrender to being nostalgic in a positive way. The sensual nature of his works stimulates basic human needs and desires that generate cravings and passion. He hopes to bring a little wistfulness to recall the sweet things in our lives.  Who is not getting just a little bit hungry while looking at these images?
