Mallo Bisset, Winner of  mARTies Award 2018

The mARTies were created by the Arts Council of Martin County to celebrate and applaud the creative people who enrich our community. Through celebration and scholarship, the mARTies provide a venue where we gather, as a community, to applaud the artists who enrich our lives through their talents, and those who make the arts a reality through leadership and philanthropy.  Well deserved, Mallo!  Congratulations!

“Thank YOU!”

We couldn’t have done it without you.
You’re Invited to help us celebrate an amazing 30 years in business!

“Pony Express” by Mallo Bisset

The   Luscious   Knife   Paintings   of:

Mallo Bisset might have taken the long road to living her dream, but once she sets her mind on something, there’s nothing stopping her!  As a little girl living on the Åland Islands in the Finnish archipelago, she wasn’t too fond of school, and told everyone “I am going to be an artist when I grow up”.  Life got in the way for a while, but after years of hard work and building a successful business, it wasn’t until 2007 with encouragement from her husband and daughter that Mallo finally took the time to do what she had always dreamed of doing.  It started with a weekly drawing class at the local Adult Education program.  After just two semesters her teacher, Helen Terry, told her she could make money drawing pet portraits.

“Rescue Me” by Mallo Bisset

Mallo’s earliest work combined her love of animals with her love for the arts.  Having tried drawing, pastels, and watercolors, it was time for oils!  She signed up for classes at a studio which was located across the street from her own business, so she could be close to work, yet make it easy to get to class every week. This is where her love affair with oils and the palette knife began.  Under the tutelage of Georgia Abood at Alizarin Crimson, she has been working on her craft and has made remarkable progress in such a short time. Having grown up on an island, and living in Florida for 30 years, with a second home in the Bahamas, it’s not a surprise that Mallo Bisset’s work often features the water and always celebrates the beauty of nature.   As it turns out, that little girl in Finland really did grow up to be an artist!

Floral Painting by Mallo Bisset

Mallo tells The Rickie Report, “Specializing in the palette knife, my paintings are often highly textured and almost always full of color! In order to truly appreciate my art I recommend you come by Red Barn Furniture/Gallery to see my latest works ‘in real life’.  A photo can rarely do it justice”.  She is correct!  Mallo’s painting styles are so varied and wonder-filled, you will be amazed!  We also appreciate how she frames her pieces, which are unique to each painting.

“Sisters” by Mallo Bisset

She says, “My artwork celebrates the things that make me happy.  While my subject matter does vary, I am greatly influenced by my love of color, animals, and nature.  I have always lived close to the sea, so water and the color blue seem to be a part of me and often make it onto my canvas. When I get an idea for a painting and I can’t stop thinking about it, I know it’s time to get to work.  Often it’s these obsessive moments that lead to the best work.  The most rewarding feeling is seeing a smile on the face of someone viewing my work and nothing compares to the satisfaction of having someone bring home a piece of my work. Hopefully, my artwork makes you happy too”!

Because Mallo and Alex own the shop/gallery where they display and sell their artworks, prices reflect not having to pay a commission to show their paintings and ceramics.  Mallo’s award winning images can also be purchased as prints, greeting cards or giclees. Mallo is very involved in the Martin County arts community, as well as local animal shelters. She has recently been nominated for the coveted “mArties” Award.

Sampling of Pottery created by Alex Murray

Alex Murray tells The Rickie Report, “For many years, I drove past a pottery studio near a friend’s house and I always wondered what went on inside.  I often talked about stopping by and signing up for a class.  Yet, somehow it never happened, until my 35th birthday when that friend gave me a gift certificate to enroll in a class.  Little did I know that I would instantly get hooked.  From that first class, I was enthralled and I spent many, many hours hanging out at the studio.  It became like a second home for a couple years and I learned so much in those early years from my mentor, JW Shell and my friends at the studio”.

Pottery Sample by Alex Murray

Alex continues, “After learning the basics of hand building, I finally graduated to the wheel.  Who knew that I could love this craft even more. Since learning to throw I seldom (basically NEVER) handbuilt anything again. There is something magical that happens when I throw.  I can’t describe it, but if you have the same love for the wheel as I do, you would understand what I mean.  I think if I only ever threw bowls for the rest of my life, I might be okay with that.  Sadly JW retired after just a few years and later on passed away.  I will always remember his lessons and how he created such a wonderful place for potters to learn.  I have since belonged to another group studio in that same location and I can say that it is a special thing to be surrounded by others that love the same craft as you do.  While we all had different styles there was always something to learn from those around you.  I do miss those group studio days sometimes”!

Bowls by Alex Murray Waiting to be fired

“These days I have a studio at my home and I try to spend as much time as I can working on my craft- it is one of the things I love to do the most.  I have often described getting caught up in the work as similar to therapy (but cheaper) for the feeling it instills in me when I’m in my zone.  It is hard these days to spend as much time as I’d like to working in the studio.  Running a business (my mother and I own and operate a casual and patio furniture store) and just living life with my husband and his two teenage children takes up most of my time.  But it’s comforting to know that the studio is always there, ready and waiting when I can carve out precious time in my schedule for my creative work”, Alex shares.

Hand made cup by Alex Murray

From the beginning, Alex has always focused on making functional pottery with very clean designs.  “I like to keep a simple aesthetic in my designs.  I love the idea that someone would use one of my bowls for their daily meals or a mug for their morning cup of coffee. Pottery has been around since the beginning of time, and maybe it’s the feeling of making something useful (from such a basic raw good such as clay) that gives me such a feeling of accomplishment”.
