Clyde Butcher’s ongoing exhibition, Living Waters and the Florida Landscape features 29 of Butcher’s black and white, large-format breathtaking photographs. He composes his work throughout the US and helps the public experience scenes out of reach and untouched. Butcher has been called the next Ansel Adams by Popular Photography magazine, awarded as a humanitarian for acting for the betterment of his community and recognized as a conservationist for bringing issues to the forefront of public consciousness through his art.

The Living Waters and the Florida Landscape is a traveling exhibition by the Aquatic Preserve Society. Butcher, a longtime, devoted supporter of environmental causes, donated the photographs to the Aquatic Preserve Program in 2000. This gallery is a collaborative effort with the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, the Aquatic Preserve Society, the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves, and the Friends of Spoil Islands.

Water/Ways, a partnership with Florida Humanities, the Smithsonian Institute, and the City of Port St. Lucie is presented as a part of the Museum on Main Street program, a national, state, and local partnership to bring exhibitions to local cultural organizations. The exhibition explores the endless motion of the water cycle, water’s effect on landscape, settlement and migration, and its impact on culture and spirituality.

Port St. Lucie Civic Center

The Civic Center invites artists and photographers to submit their work for exhibition. Featured artists have the opportunity to sell their original creations and reproductions. In addition, a reception, free and open to the public and complete with cash bar, light fare and live music, is held in honor of each featured artist on the opening night of their exhibit. This offers patrons the opportunity to meet in person the creative individuals whose works of art are on display.

Civic Center Recreation Manager Kelly Tiger and the Public Art Advisory Board select each artist and the artwork that will be displayed for each exhibit. City of Port St. Lucie team members install the exhibit, carefully designing the look and feel of the space using the wide variety of display pieces available.

Those artists interested in showcasing their work in the Civic Center’s Art Gallery can complete an application available on the city’s website at www.cityofpsl.com. Artists are asked to provide a biography, artist statement and at least ten examples of their current work. There is no cost for the artist to apply and if selected, the exhibit and reception are also free of charge. Once the City of Port St. Lucie has juried all works, the artists may be contacted to extend a contract to exhibit in the Art Gallery. Applications are accepted throughout the year.  For more information about the Civic Center Art Gallery, contact Civic Center Recreation Manager Kelly Tiger at (772) 807-4499 or email her at ktiger@cityofpsl.com.

BRBarbara’s subject matter is diverse.  Two pieces of her artwork are placed in Municipal buildings in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens.  BRBarbara’s capturing of shadows is particularly entertaining, with every-day objects taking center stage.  The beauty of her photography is how she captures what we normally pass by without thinking – and makes us take a second look.

"Resting Hands"

“Resting Hands” by Taylor Loughlin

Taylor Loughlin interned with Flagler College in a restoration of paintings done by George W. Maynard.  She worked with students from the Escuela Superior de Arte del Principado de Asturias of Spain, who traveled from Aviles, Spain to restore the original ceiling paintings in the Dining Hall of Flagler College. As an intern, Loughlin worked close with the other students, on 40 foot scaffolding, to reattach falling paint and patch up spots where the paint was worn away.  Taylor also interned with the Vero Beach Art Museum summer camp programs for children interested in the arts and she has volunteered at various art programs for children in South Florida and Saint Augustine,FL.

“Pool Side” by Taylor Loughlin

Taylor Loughlin currently works and lives in St. Lucie County where she works on her newest collection of paintings.  She focuses on highly saturated skin tones and how far the flesh in an image can be pushed to show color variation.  She is interested in how the figure is portrayed and the colors that make up the skin tones.  Her current work is a study of the figure’s interaction with water—how the form is morphed under the water and how blue tones affect the skin.

"Direct Gaze"

“Direct Gaze” by Taylor Loughlin

Taylor tells us, “The ebb and flow of water dictates how an object appears within it.  The element of water changes how an object appears below the surface and becomes an intriguing visual experience for the viewer. The image may appear broken, foreshortened, or even morphed.  This illusion creates a visual experience, forcing the eye and brain to decipher what it sees.  The fragmentation of the image interacting with water is both puzzling and beautiful.  My work involves mixing highly saturated skin tones with blue hues to illustrate the intricacies of how the flesh and water interact”.
