Extensive international travel over the past 10-plus years has afforded Michael one-of-a-kind moments when the uniqueness of a place and the right time of day align to present themselves to a watchful eye.  At the same time a good portion of his work centers around architecture (mostly black and white), using geometry and structure, light and shadow, long exposure, darkening filters and multipoint perspective to compel the viewer to examine iconic structures as majestic elements of a culture.

In 2021 he introduced a new twist to photography, 3D photo sculpture, where dimensionality is given to an architectural image by layering segments atop each other. As a largely self-taught artist, his unique perspective is apparent to the viewer. As a photographer he is the counterpart to the subject. When both are in sync, the art reveals itself.

And when you see, when you spend time looking, re-looking, scouting, waiting, surveilling and examining, that’s when you start feeling.  And feeling is interpreting too.

Some of the images reflect my feelings at the scene.  Less about accuracy, more about the impression I had.

The black and white images start by removing the distraction of color and ask you to focus on the shape, volume, light, shadow, delicateness and grandeur of the subject.

The 3-D photo sculptures are the end result of extracting an element from a building or bridge and reimagining an entirely different entity —sometimes keeping the original features and sometimes extrapolating on those features and plowing new ground.

Eileen beckons viewers into these paintings where they can climb stairs and ladders to nowhere while winding their way through picture planes on shapes, textures and colors that guide their eyes through these spirited compositions.

“On Painted Stairs” by Eileen Shaloum

Eileen Shaloum is a painter and mixed media artist who searches for and employs the whimsical in her subject matter. Her work evokes the joy and innocence one usually finds in children’s art. Being an art educator in the public schools on Long Island, New York, for over thirty years influenced much of her art making, an abstract process with a childlike sophistication. Her colors are often bold and her compositions alternate between ordered and loose, but always playful. She enjoys adding handmade and found papers, fabric, photographs, string and other found objects into her acrylic paint to give the surface a mysterious quality.

“Feeling The Blues” by Eileen Shaloum

Her present body of work has also been influenced by the writings of Italo Calvino in his book, “Invisible Cities.”The imaginary landscapes conjured by Calvino beckoned her to interpret them on canvas and paper which led to her unique, fantastical semi-landscape style which she calls “Dreamscapes.”

Eileen has been a painter for more than forty years. Her work is in several private collections in the United States and England. She exhibits widely throughout the United States, mostly in New York and Florida. An active exhibiting member of several Florida art organizations, Eileen has been showing her art all over Florida for over sixteen years.

“Eudoxia” by Eileen Shaloum

After retiring in 2006 Eileen and her husband, Al, bought a home in Delray Beach where she splits her time between Florida and Long Beach, NY. Both places are stimulating artistically and offer many opportunities to show, exhibit, sell, and participate in arts organizations. Making and developing her art is her primary focus, which has become her full-time occupation. She received her B.A. in Art Education and her M.A. in Art History from Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. Being an art educator in the public schools of Long Island from 1971-2006 was a rewarding career that inspired her own art making.

During her career teaching art, she gave professional development workshops to other art teachers at NYSATA conferences and locally. She also gave workshops to other artists interested in learning new techniques in using mixed media with their painting. During that time, she continued to exhibit her own work and ran several art businesses from her home studio. Some of these businesses were: designing children’s clothing, creating one-of-a-kind art furniture, and for 12 years, Portrait Sign-In Books where she painted, on commission, portraits for parties, engagements, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, etc.

Eileen has exhibited in galleries and museums, warehouses and libraries both in group and one person shows in New York and Florida during the past four decades. She has won many awards and is in several private collections all over the country.

Fine Art Conservation Photographer, Phoenix

From the majesty and frailty of the Florida Everglades to the haunting beauty of Ireland, each fine art photograph by Phoenix inspires love and respect for our essential environment.  Her Solo Exhibition of 18 photographs will be displayed in the gallery inside Plunge Beach Resort’s lobby in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

“Loxahatchee Sunset” by Phoenix

“With this exhibition we are inviting viewers to connect with the beauty and power captured in each of Phoenix’s art works,” said Joe Imbrogno, Director of Guest Excellence at the Plunge Beach Resort.  The exhibit includes several of Phoenix’s works taken during her Artist-In-Residence in Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park. They are being shown for the first time, since earlier exhibits they were juried into were cancelled due to COVID-19″.

“Dawn’s Early Light” by Phoenix

Phoenix, who only goes by her first name, established a love of nature as a child during family vacations to national parks. Although, she taught film-making and photography early in her career she left them for some twenty years. Returning to photography in the digital age, she developed an exceptional talent and passion to help protect nature and wildlife. Today she is an internationally collected, award-winning conservation photographer.  Most recently a national hospital has acquired 22 large photographs measuring 24 x 36 inches each from Phoenix’s sacred trees, landscapes and winged life collections for their permanent collection.

“Red Leaf Tree Rich Mountain Road” by Phoenix

“Phoenix is a legendary nature photographer and I have always been impressed with the quality of her work. Whether presenting a macro or wildlife photograph, or a long exposure shot of the Milky Way, Phoenix consistently delivers images that transmit beyond their compositions. I only have admiration for her, her work and her wisdom,” said Sophie Bonet, Lead Curator at ArtServe, one of the Plunge Beach Resort’s art partners.

“Before The Storm” by Phoenix

“Being a nature photographer is a mystical experience,” Phoenix tells The Rickie Report. “Like a meditation of light – color, texture, structure, pattern, and composition– it awakens an inner peace and knowingness.  With each image, it’s always my intent to raise awareness of endangered and threatened species and habitats that we stand to lose in the natural world if we are not careful. It is my desire that viewers are inspired to love, cherish and protect the fragile beauty and wonder that is nature as they reconnect with that inner peace reflected in each of my images.

“Blazing Sunset” by Phoenix

She continues, “For me, preserving nature and wilderness areas is not a luxury, but a necessity for the human spirit. In protecting the world’s nature and wildlife, the environment, we are really protecting the family of humanity. The importance of nature is more than a scientific necessity for creating air, clean water and producing food. It is a sacred necessity for healing and bringing peace to the human soul.”
