Bowen now paints full time and is a Signature Member of the Florida Watercolor and Gold Coast Watercolor Societies and an Associate Member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

“Carolina Wren” by John Bowen

John tells The Rickie Report, “Realistic expressionism is how I describe my work. Capturing a mode, striving to tell a story, intrigued by history, landscapes and themes, these are the inspirations that create my art.  I emphasize the play of light and shadow as seen in nature and describe textures of time in historic places. Each painting is carefully planned from exploration through execution. Plein air painting, sketching, photography, using whatever means possible to achieve my vision.  I combine both opaque and transparent watercolors on heavy (300 lb) archival paper.  I work patiently as I create the final piece which expresses the beauty that inspired me.”

Lynn Morgan tells The Rickie Report, “I have painted in acrylics, watercolors and then pastels, and have made a large investment in materials in each of those media.  I vowed that I would not start investing in the materials required for another medium.  I still love pastels, but when I paint with pastels, my work always seems to end up looking like “something”.  I have always loved abstract art, and it has been my goal to paint more abstractly.  My pastel work has moved toward more abstraction over the years, but I never really felt like I got there completely.  I finally decided to give in and try oil painting.  With the addition of cold wax to the oil paint, and using a palette knife more than a brush, I have finally achieved the non-objective objective”!

“Coupled” Oil and Cold Wax by Lynn Morgan (A.E. Backus Museum’s “Director’s Choice” Award)

For Lynn, creating art is an integral part of her philosophy of being consciously aware of the world around her. Lynn has been creating art all of her life. Until her retirement from the corporate world, art was one of her hobbies, but it was the only hobby that she never tired of.  When she retired, she reinvented herself as an artist! By attending classes and workshops, she learned techniques that have evolved over the years from realistic renderings to a much more abstract style.  “Before I begin a painting, I have an idea in my head about my intention”, Lynn explains.  “That idea may be inspired by one of my travel adventures or just an initial idea.  Since color is my primary passion, I will select a color palette based on the intention and  what colors I am in love with that day.  For my abstract oil paintings, I begin with a very loose wash of acrylic paint to cover the canvas”.

For her oil paintings, the process is the completely intuitive application of paint with a brush or more often, paint mixed with cold wax applied with a palette knife, or line work using oil sticks.  For pastels, the emotion of the painting begins with the application of soft pastel colors.  “When I think the painting is complete, I leave it on the easel until the next day, when I will undoubtedly see adjustments or additions that need to be made.  I will study the piece and ask myself a series of questions about design and composition. Does it convey the emotion I felt when I imagined the idea?  Are there any areas that need “something”?  Depending upon my response to these questions, I make further adjustments or declare it complete and sign it.  I want my work to express my quest to consciously understand my spiritual self; to participate in creating a personal and collective reality for the world around me”.

“Veinity” Pastel by Lynn Morgan

Travel is one of Lynn’s passions, starting with her travels to Hawaii, where she attended the University of Hawaii for one semester. Since then she has returned to Hawaii with her daughter and also visited Tahiti, France, England, Switzerland, and several other European countries. In recent years, she bicycled in Slovenia, Austria and Italy, she hiked throughout Patagonia, including a visit to Cape Horn. She has also sailed the Dalmatian Islands in Croatia on a 41-foot sailboat. Many paintings have been inspired by these adventures.  Lynn was born in a Detroit suburb, but has spent most of her life living in Florida. She doesn’t paint a lot of Florida scenes because she says, “I see Florida scenery all the time. What inspires me is scenery that I only get to see when I travel.”  Lynn’s early art experiences were orchestrated by her mother, a former student at the Parsons School in New York. As a pre-teen, she was allowed to ride the city bus to downtown Detroit (imagine that!) by herself. She would browse the stationary departments at the big department stores to find drawing paper. As a teen, she began to paint with acrylics.

With a BA in Education and a MA in Human Resources Management, Lynn’s marriage and career path became primary.  As a single mother, the ability to support her family became the driving force in her life and painting remained a hobby. She tried flying a plane, playing guitar and piano, playing golf, SCUBA diving and sailing, but she always came back to painting. Lynn painted with watercolors, taking classes with Garri Katz, Barbara Nechis and Robbie Laird. The art classes at Palm Beach State College introduced her to pastels. She was hooked on the look of the pastel sticks, the feel of the medium in her hand with no brush as a go-between, and the brilliant color that clings to the tooth of the paper.

“Span”Oil and Cold Wax by Lynn Morgan

When Lynn first painted with pastels, she moved from portraiture to non-objective art. In her period of figurative paintings, as she studied with Margaret Dyer, her style evolved into a looser, more abstract one. As her travels increased, Lynn began painting landscapes. She studied with Miroslav Antic, Terri Ford, Casey Klahn, Aline Ordman, Jen Evenhus and Tony Allain. Her style continues to move toward more abstraction in both landscape and figurative works. Lynn has added an exciting new collection of abstract oil and cold wax paintings to her portfolio and is now a full-time artist. She is a Signature Member of the National Association of Women Artists (N.A.W.A), the Artists Guild of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Florida Artists Group (FLAG), Women in the Visual Arts (WITVA) and the Martin Artisans Guild. She is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America. She exhibits both locally and nationally and has won awards at several exhibits, including the most recent “Director’s Choice Award from the A.E. Backus Museum. Lynn is currently represented by GalleryVibe in Naples, FL, and she teaches pastel classes and workshops at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, FL.
