“This marriage of image, technique and materials is distinctive and causes people to talk about what they are seeing because there is nothing else like it.”  Lynn Doyal

“Hannah” by Lynn Doyal

From realistic to representational to abstract, these artworks are a splendid fusion of contemporary design with a reverence for the techniques of the past.  Lynn Doyal’s technique of combining various media such as digital photography, painting, fiber hand stitching, and beading are exclusive to her creative process, resulting in artworks that engage the viewer on multiple levels.

“Neon Shells” by Lynn Doyal

Due to the intricate number of details in each painting, Lynn’s work is best viewed up close in order to appreciate the fine workmanship. Many of her works are scanned, enlarged and digitalized allowing for a more abstract and dramatic experience. She delights in the different impact the same image can have when size is introduced as an additional element.

“Enter By The Narrow Gate” by Lynn Doyal

Lynn tells The Rickie Report, “All my work is initially created on canvas incorporating a digital image and/or “free-hand” painting.  I go back into the image using hand stitched fiber threads and beading to bring a textural element to the artwork.  This canvas is then photographed in high definition and digitized so that the image can be output on a variety of surfaces including glass, metal, canvas, tile, and vinyl – which allows for SCALE to become an essential element in the visual experience.  The unique way in which the artwork is photographed and digitized yield 2-D images that look 3-D.  Seeing the detailed hand crafting and brush strokes is an experience that most every viewer describes as “Cool!” because it fools the eye.  There is nothing else like it!

“Dew From Heaven” by Lynn Doyal

While it is natural to try and visually link the Biblical artwork titles with the image, the artwork titles follow my spiritual direction, whereas my visual imagery is reflective of my artistic direction”. Lynn Doyal

“Glorious  Things Are Spoken” by Lynn Doyal

As an established studio artist, Lynn’s interest to create Public Art began in 2016 when she became a volunteer for Palm Beach County Art in Public Places program.  “Simultaneously, I started an apprenticeship with a professional Public Artist. These opportunities afforded a wealth of information into the public art realm. I have since received several public art commissions and am advancing my career in this industry”.

“Hibiscus” by Lynn Doyal

Lynn’s artistry has been seen at galleries and exhibitions in Florida, New York City, and countless places in between.  She is a member of Florida Association of Public Art Professionals (FAPAP), Wellington Art Society, Wellington, FL.  A native Floridian, born in Miami, Lynn resides in Boca Raton.

“American Beauties III” by Diane Prater – 40″ x 52″

Diane Prater’s formal art training at the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts (Storrs, CT) was the beginning of sharing her passion of the world around her.  Diane tells The Rickie Report, ” The thing I love about working in watercolor is the latitude this medium affords. Each of my paintings is a collaboration of extremes – the abstraction of a chaotic but controlled flow juxtaposed to a sharply realistic rendering of a featured shell or complimentary grouping of shells. The mixture of pigment, water and light creates never-ending combinations and limitless possibilities! Whether the theme of a particular work involves water above in the form of clouds, or water below as ocean current, it is water in all its forms – in subject, background and the medium in which they are expressed that attracts me to watercolor”.

“Down Under Wonders” by Diane Prater – 29″ x 41″

Diane’s  large scale original work includes realistic representations of world-wide specimen shells against brilliant abstract backgrounds in a manner generally atypical of transparent medium. Large scale original work include: 60″ x 40″, 41″ x 29″, and 30″ x 22″ size work on 100% cotton content paper. She re-emerged artistically after 13 months of personal rediscovery beginning August 2008 and exited this period of introspection a more prolific painter with clearer life purpose and more focused artistic direction. During the past several years, Diane worked on compiling a large body of work, engaging with the community and exhibiting.

Why   The    Seashell ?

The seashell – marine mollusks and bivalves – deserve our attention and admiration. How frequently we’ve seen shells portrayed whimsically in paintings or as decorative art, with a brief brushstroke here, a bare suggestion there. We know what it is after all – just a shell – a less important component of a vastly more important marine ecosystem.

“Mermaid Combs” by Diane Prater – 40″ x 60″

Upon closer inspection, however, we detect divine inspiration. Shells display the same amazing engineering expressed in a spider’s web or the arrangement of petals in a rose. Impressive geometry and complex algorithms form exquisite designs as graceful curves, spines, and spirals. Breathtaking colors join in lovely, and often surprising combinations. How could these features escape our notice or the shell itself be relegated to “less than important” status?

“Angel Wings I” by Diane Prater – 22″ x 30″

Shells are not just symbolic of ocean themes. They’re indicative of Divine engineering and a well conceived blueprint. Often delicate yet strong enough to withstand ocean forces; beautiful as they are  functional and so  artistically crafted to truly inspire awe! For all these reasons I chose to focus on the seashell for this body of work.

Diane Prater with one of her large scale paintings

Diane transitioned from freelance watercolor illustration back to fine art painting creating art purchased and/or commissioned by private collectors. A selection of recent work was on long term loan in Sachs Hall at Palm Beach Atlantic University July 2018 – July 2020. Diane’s artworks have been seen in local exhibits and private collections. She was invited to show her artworks at Palm Beach Gardens Municipal City Hall (June, 2019).

In  addition  to  Exhibiting  I  Also  Teach  Watercolor…

Diane is currently teaching Watercolor for the College of the Arts at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s West Palm Beach campus. The class is held Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11 a.m. in the Visual Arts Studio, and currently only offered to students enrolled through the University. Her emphasis has been on creating large scale watercolor paintings for exhibit and sale through my own art production company. That being said,  she tells The Rickie Report, “I teach this class because of my love for the medium and a desire to pass on my knowledge and skill to another generation of painters. Several of my students have never explored watercolor previously, and many are surprised at the progress they make over the span of the course”.

Kathleen Denis’ contemporary impressionistic style begins with a process in either plein air (outside) or in her studio, using mostly oils, reviewing and creating sketches and studies with many layers of paint.  She starts with realism and ends in creativity, with colorful brushstrokes and energetic movement, inviting the viewer to imagine being there.

“Holding Onto Hope” by Kathleen Denis

She tells The Rickie Report, “My favorite piece in this Exhibit is  “Holding On To Hope”. It represents the isolation caused by society and our current pandemic during these times of unrest, yet the young lady is holding on to hope, depicted by a bright red flower.  Her face is unknown and hidden in darkness so that anyone can put themselves in her shoes.

“Resting Place” by Kathleen Denis

Kathleen was born in Miami, grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, and spent much time in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, which greatly influenced her use of subject matter and colorful style.  Her love of art began at the age of four when taking art lessons from a fashion illustrator.  After graduating from University of Miami, with a BFA degree in Graphic Design, she continued her painting skills by studying from noted master artists.

“On The Bright Side” by Kathleen Denis

She began a lucrative career and has become one of the country’s top licensed artists!  Kathleen’s art appears on hundreds of home décor and gift products including wallpaper, kitchenware, bathroom collections and much more, sold through stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, HomeGoods, and Marshals.  Her art has been featured in articles in professional artist magazines and has a number of artworks have appeared in movies and tv series like Hawaii 5-O and Bloodline.  Her collectors include the producers of Titanic and Avatar, as well as known political figures.  Her original paintings can be found in Galleries, Exhibits, Plein Air Events and her website at www.kathleendenis.com.

“Three Dinghies” by Kathleen Denis

“Depicting sentiment through my paintings is of great importance”, Kathleen shares.  “Whether the subject matter is a timeworn cottage, a day at the beach or a sun-drenched garden, capturing the effect of light attracts me to every scene I paint. My current series of island life has been greatly influenced by growing up in South Florida, with visits to the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. with brightly painted buildings, colorful landscapes and turquoise waters. Painting chairs in many of my scenes suggests the need to take time out to rest, as I often hear, “I want to be there”.

“Above and Beyond” by Kathleen Denis

As a faculty member at Lighthouse ArtCenter, Kathleen teaches classes and workshops there and at other art centers, in person and online.  She is a member of American Impressionist Society, National Oil and Acrylic Society, Oil Painters of America and an Official United States Coast Guard Artist.  In addition, Kathleen created a series called “A Scream For Silence” which uses elements in her paintings to reflect God’s Word bringing hope, restoration, and instruction to those in need.
