GLASS SEURAT- This commission is based on a conté crayon drawing by French post-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat (1859- 1891). This glass version is made of 20 double layered, fused glass panels, which are set into an existing back lit wall, between the kitchen and living space.

ABOUT JOSEPH

Joseph Cavalieri runs CAVAglass, a stained glass design and production studio in New York City. His focus is making one-of-a-kind commissions and art for exhibitions in the US and internationally. He specializes in contemporary stained glass, often based on fables and books, as well as production of these works using techniques including hand painting, air brushing, and sand blasting stained glass. He has worked with fabricators Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Inc. in Minnesota, and Derix Art Glass in Germany.

“One of the really interesting things that Joseph does is tap into all of our associations with stained glass and then flips them on end”.

 — Jennifer Scanlan, Associate Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York

Joseph’s focus is hand-painted stained glass art using methods created by Medieval artists. He first draws the design, then cuts colored glass pieces to fit the design. These fit together like a large puzzle. He then paints each section of glass with enamels that are kiln fired, melting the design onto the glass. The glass is then soldered together, set into a wall hung metal frame with internal LED lighting. Though the technique is very historic, Cavalieri updates the stories illustrated in the work to relate to the past, present and future. Past is the traditional stained glass vibrant illuminated colors, designs, and patterns. The present are images from current icons like The Simpson‘s and Alice in Wonderland!

JOSEPH’S WORK

CINDERELLA- Magical characters of Cinderella, her fairy godmother and the magical pumpkin carriage come from an existing antique slide. They are combined on stage in front of an audience of muscle men. Commissioned work.

MADONNA & PRADA- Commissioned in 2013, and currently in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design. This multiple layered stained glass triptych tells the story of a modern day Madonna and her favorite accessories. Traditional religious paintings typically shows Madonna caressing the Baby Jesus. The Christ Child is replaced with a Gothic version of a Prada shoe.

HANSEL & GRETEL-  See this work in person in the lounge of Dixon Place in New York City. This work is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Hansel & Gretel” and uses characters from the production at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

You’ll start by choosing 2 different Glass Tattoo Stencil designs then create a separate glass oval with each of those designs. February 22,23,24,25, 2018

“I work at translating and elevating the average, day-to-day experience into an enthusiastic and energetic celebration.   I am captivated when finding appealing combinations of elements in the everyday scene and experiences then use these memories in my creations .
Being born into an artistic family, my father and grandfather were practicing artists, I continue the family legacy with glass. Glass is the media that reveals this natural vibrancy of mind and spirit to its utmost.  I enjoy the technique of using glass to create something that is both abstract and literal. “

Alice Benvie-Gebhart earned her bachelor and master’s degrees in art education with concentrations in painting and printmaking. She worked as a teacher and painter for many years before discovering fused glass. She now works exclusively in kiln-fired glass.
