MEET       MICHELLE     HELD

Opening Reception:

Thursday, February 3

5:30 – 7:30  PM

Artist, Michelle Held

Exhibit  is  available  February  3 – 26, 2022

Gallery  Hours:    Tuesday – Saturday   10 am – 5 pm

Artwork by Michelle Held

Much like a pink spoonbill soaring through the dusky evening twilight, Michelle Held brings with her a splash of vibrancy, a flutter of unique perspective, and the song of nature in its truest form. Born and raised in Maryland, Michelle knew from a young age that she was meant to fly the vast skies of the art world with a palette and paints tucked beneath her eager wings. Michelle is passionate about the morning glow of a waking sun illuminating an observant egret, the conversation between a fisherman and a hungry pelican testing its luck, or the simplistic beauty of a half-peeled clementine, bursting with flavor and juicy color. Her passion and bold strokes come through in her paintings that are unforgettable!

Painting by Michelle Held

Her success in the art world has come from her winning combination of creative spark and imaginative nature along with her meticulous attention to detail. Often commissioned for custom paintings as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and its ecosystems brought her to embrace the natural world through painting from life. From serene, swampy marshes draped in ancient Spanish moss to tiny, rickety oyster towns bursting with rainbow buoys and boats, there is always a sight to behold. Michelle believes that evoking a feeling of light, space, and passion is the key to any successful contemporary painting. Michelle gives attention to composition, design and value and gives credence to a “go with the flow” attitude as well, and lets the painting direct her, instead of imposing her will on it throughout the entire process.

Painting by Michelle Held

Plein air has set flight to many paint outs, including Easton, Forgotten Coast, Lighthouse ArtCenter, Adirondacks, Sedona to name a few. Achieving many awards throughout this journey, her favorite ones are the artist choice awards. The real victory however, has come with her love of teaching. There were so many who encouraged her, Michelle finds that paying it forward is the best way to fulfill the soul.

Taking a note from the birds she so loves to paint, Michelle approaches painting like flight, letting the swells and surges of the wind carry her and her brushes through those brilliant beautiful skies. Michelle has been passionately working as an artist and business owner for the past 25 years. She lives in Sarasota, FL and currently participates in invitational paint outs and is widely collected throughout the United States. Often commissioned for custom painting as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and the natural world has brought her many awards throughout the United States!

MEET   THE   ARTIST:

Karen Leffel-Massengill

Karen has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and has been working as a Professional Artist for decades. She has been the cover artist for “Watercolor Magic” magazine and has been juried into National Exhibitions, notably “Birds in Art” and Arts for the Parks. She also enjoys signature status with the Florida Watercolor Society and the Society of Animal Artists. Karen has won many awards for her work in Art Festivals around the country, Plein Air Magazine, Elliott Museum, and Backus Gallery. She has received accolades, not only for her oils and watercolors, but also is a hugely popular teacher at the Artist’s Nook in Stuart!

“Double Vision” by Karen Leffel-Massengill

Karen tells The Rickie Report, “Sometimes I shout with color, sometimes it’s a whisper”.  She knew at a very early age that she wanted to be an artist. Pencils and crayons were constant companions as a child as her family moved literally around the world. France, Germany, Turkey and Thailand were just a few of the many places where she grew up and drew creative inspiration.  She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was sidetracked from her passion to work as an artist by marriage and raising three sons. As it often does, life lead her down a different path and she earned her associate’s degree in nursing in 1981.

“Moment in Time” by Karen Leffel-Massengill

It wasn’t until her new husband’s sudden death in 1995 that she began to pursue her original childhood dreams of becoming a professional artist. She dove into the deep end of painting as a means of dealing with his death. The tragedy of his death was transformed into a positive step toward her career as a painter. Taking workshops from world class artists such as Carl Dalio, Janet Rodgers, Jim Kosvanec, and many others, she grew and learned rapidly in her endeavors as an artist. She was the cover artist for the “Watercolor Magic”magazine for its summer issue in 1998. In 2000, she was accepted into the acclaimed international competition, Birds in Art, and in three subsequent years as well, in both watercolor and oil mediums. She was accepted into the nationally ranked competition known as Arts for the Parks in 1998 with watercolor entries in both the top 100 and top 200 of this competition. She enjoys signature status with the Florida Watercolor Society and the Society of Animal Artists.

“Early Morning Light”  by Karen Leffel-Massengill

Leffel-Massengill has enjoyed immense success on the art show circuit, being accepted into many of the top art shows in the nation to include Coconut Grove, Ann Arbor State Street Art Fair, Ann Arbor South University Art Fair, Winter Park Sidewalk Festival and ArtiGras. She has won numerous awards at these shows and has been selected as the poster artist for five different shows. In 2018, Leffel-Massengill was awarded second place in the All Florida Show “Sweet” shown at the Elliott Museum in Stuart Florida, first place at the annual Backus Gallery competition for her piece titled “Double Vision” and as a national winner in the national competition sponsored by Plein Air Magazine in the the bi-monthly “animal” category with her painting titled “Female Cow Bird.”
