Amelia Costa

Amelia grew up in a large, close knit family in Peru.   She tells us, “My family emigrated to the United States, so that my siblings and I could attend University. I received a Bachelor of Science and after some time in the business world decided to pursue my interest in the arts. I attended Florida Atlantic University to study painting. I gravitated towards clay, just before graduation and stayed awhile longer to satisfy my curiosity and my growing fascination with the medium”.
DSC_0117
“In my work, I have combined my two interests  in illustration and clay. Most recently I moved away from color and  concentrated on the story the pieces convey. My aim is to have the pieces tell the viewer the stories that they tell me, and share the journey with me”.

Irene Jalowayski

Palm Beach Smashing Glass

Irene tells us, “I am a retired speech pathologist and Florida native, who lives in West Palm Beach.  I was always an art lover/collector and began taking fused glass classes nine years ago.  I  studied with a private teacher, took classes at McMow Art Glass Center,  Art Glass Environments,  Kay Weiner’s Glass Classes, and in several out-of-town venues. Now I have my own studio because my hobby has become my passion!”

Fused Glass by Irene Jalowayski

Fused Glass by Irene Jalowayski

“Working with glass has allowed me to express my creativity and love for color, shape and form.  I get lost in my work and experience a thrill each time I open my kiln.  I  sell my work at several galleries and am thrilled to be one of the artists at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth, and  at the  OSGS Gallery in the Northwood neighborhood.  My creations have been exhibited in many juried art shows and I was featured as an Emerging Artist at ArtiGras, 2012”.  I can be reached by email at   Irene Jalowayski ijaloway@yahoo.com   or visit my website at www.palmbeachsmashingglass.com

Sharon Kurlychek

“I engaged with the energy of clay in the 70’s when I first learned to to throw pots on a kick wheel at art school in Cleveland, Ohio.  I took more advanced classes (David Vargo)  and the joy of clay settled into by hands.  In the 80’s, I lived in the Dominican Republic, where I taught English. Experimenting with the production of primitive pottery– digging clay deposits from riverbeds, creating glazes from the ashes I collected from a bakery’s wood-fired oven, and firing in open pits was joyful.  Back in the US, I bought an electric kiln, continued my art studies (The Cleveland Institute of Art and Andrea Gill from Alfred University) and began teaching at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood”.
Sharon Kurlychek

Sharon Kurlychek

“When I moved to Florida, for subsequent art festivals, I created a line of tropical number tiles. My website, www.islandtiles.com shows 12 designs.  Customers can choose the tiles and colors to place an order for a custom house number tile.  I also do commission work for tile murals and signs, working with designers, HOA’s or home owners, offering color sketches and cost estimates for custom work.  I can be reached through my website or e-mail: islandtiles@bellsouth.net.”
Sharon Kurlychek

Sharon Kurlychek

” I am continually inspired by fellow clay artists (Betty Wilson and members of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches).  My art career has recently spun off in a new direction.  Taking classes (Carla Golembe at the Delray Center for the Arts), spending time in the artsy town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and a mixed media workshop (Dee Roper at La Fabrica Aurora) has had a big influence on the direction of my creativity!  Now I am creating mixed media pieces, acrylic paintings and collages!”

John McCoy

John tells us, “I am a functional potter. In my work, I strive for qualities of simplicity, honesty and  a sense of fluidity. When making my pots, I depend on intuition and feeling, rather than upon conceptual ideas and analysis. Natural and organic objects, along with the varied and rich traditions of ceramics are the main influences of my work. I have a very classical approach to clay, even when combining and altering forms”.
John McCoy

John McCoy

“During the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to put my work in  a wood fired Anagama kiln. I feel my forms have been enhanced and visually strenghthened by the warm colors of the ash deposits and the textures and patterns created by the mark of the fire. This natural process allows the viewer to share my experience  of working with clay, from the moment my hands shape and form the clay, leaving my mark, to the fluidity of the flames that leave their impression on the surface of the pot forever”.

John tells The Rickie Report, ” This show continues to be an annual event where local artists get a chance to meet their neighbors.  It is important for artists to share their work with our community.”

DSC_0085

John is a nationally recognized artist, potter and educator with many years of experience.  His work can be found in private collections throughout the United States.  John’s focus is stoneware and wood fired functional pottery.

John McCoy became interested in pottery in high school. With his father’s help he built a potter’s wheel and set it up in the garage. That was the beginning of a journey that took him to graduate school and a lifetime interest in the handmade functional object.

John strives for the qualities of simplicity, honesty and a sense of fluidity. When making pots, be it a teapot, a bowl or  a porcelain vase, he depends on intuition and feeling rather than upon conceptual ideas and analysis.  He is inspired by natural and organic objects along with the varied and rich traditions of ceramics. His approach to clay is classical even as he produces very contemporary, elegant forms.

John shares, “During the last 15 years , I have had the opportunity to put my work in a wood fired Anagama kiln. I feel my forms have been enhanced and visually strengthened by the warm colors of the ash deposits and the textures and patterns created by the mark of the fire. This natural process allows the viewer to share my experience of working with clay, from the moment my hands shape and form the clay, leaving my mark, to the fluidity of the flames that leave their impression on the surface of the pot, forever.”
