The Hobe Sound Fine Arts League, previously known as The Art League of Hobe Sound, was formed on January 23, 1984 with the following members: Dolores Alchermes Zapatelli, Rosalie Becht, Charlotte Denniston, Evelyn Gaio, Margaret Matlock, and Jean Seewald. The League held their meetings in the St. Christopher’s Parish hall.

The decision to incorporate was made in November 1985. From the beginning, a professional artist gave the League members a monthly demonstration in the artist specialty.

The original Gallery space was obtained in April of 1987, and opened publicly the following September. This provided the members with a place to exhibit there art. At the same, time, the art instruction program was instituted and classes in various art media were opened to members as well as the general public. Our new Gallery space was obtained in 1996.

Kathleen shares, “Starting a painting with color, texture, gestural marks and layers may seem like “chaos”, but it delivers vital energy that is both fun and intuitive. Great design and composition are the elements that bring “order” to the rich start and turn your painting into an attention-getting and expressive finish. Applying strong design and compositional skills are the focus. Beginner or advanced, you are encouraged to discover and explore your unique expression and personal imagery in realism, abstraction or non-objective”.

Coastal Landscape by Michael Story

Master your landscape painting and join Michael for this 3-day workshop as we use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in our painting’s composition. The workshop begins with an I-Pad step-by-step presentation showing a progression of Michael’s painting techniques from start to finish. You’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image.

“A Glimpse of Sedona” by Michael Story

Starting with shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright color while capturing depth, drama and mood to your work.

“Field of Aspens” by Michael Story

Michael Story earned a BFA in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He later traveled to New York, studying pastel and oil painting under internationally know artist, Daniel Greene. Today, Michael Story is an award-
winning artist who regularly teaches pastel and oil painting, guest lectures, and juries art shows. His client list of private buyers and corporate collectors continues to grow, including the Marriott Corporation, Progressive Energy of
Florida, The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, Holiday Inn, Fluor Corporation, Erving Texas, and Walt Disney World. Story has work showcased in the Bush Presidential Library in Houston. His paintings have been reproduced by major publishers such as Canadian Art Prints of British Columbia and distributed worldwide.
