So that bracelet you are wearing can trace its origins to some Neanderthal roaming the forest. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? It makes sense when you realize the origination of jewelry spans many thousands of years. Jewelry is one of the oldest archeological artifacts – shell beads from the Neanderthal area around 115,000 years ago were some of the earliest discoveries. Throughout history, jewelry has been a universal form of adornment – to show status or rank, as a recognition of affiliation (religious, political) and as a symbol of personal meaning (love, mourning, luck). Thanks to the ingenuity of the Greeks adding gemstones to gold in 1600 BC, jewelry has evolved into a stunning form of art. Fast forward to today, and there is an endless variety of jewelry adorning our bodies, our fashion, our homes. Two local artisans who have embraced this art form are being featured in the upcoming event,Glass, Jewelry and Wearable Art at The Craft Gallery in West Palm Beach.

Rickie Leiter, publisher of – you guessed it – The Rickie Report, will be showcasing some of her beautiful jewelry at this event. Most of her pieces incorporate a variety of gemstones, many with a central, unusual focal piece to complement the stones. Her one-of-a-kind pieces have been sold in museum shops, local galleries and wearable art boutiques. It’s no surprise that Rickie landed squarely in the middle of South Florida’s local art scene. Raised in a decidedly creative household with an affinity for community activism and an appreciation of nature, she has explored many avenues during her artistic journey. From art consultant and board member of an international organization to special needs advocate and online publisher, Rickie’s creativity shines in her art.

Irene Jalowayski, an accomplished glass artist in Palm Beach County, will thrill you with her exquisite jewelry using glass and metals. Working in fused glass, cast glass and mixed media, Irene has an incredible eye for color and style. Her use of dichroic glass adds even more color explosion to her pieces. In addition to her unique jewelry designs, you’ll see her creative style emerge in her glass pieces – sculptures, vases, platters, Judaica, candlesticks and so much more. Always an art lover and collector, Irene started “playing” in fused glass 15 years ago, studying with master glass artists in the area. What started as a hobby has evolved into a passion, and it shows! The winner of numerous awards, her work has been seen in galleries, art shows and exhibitions around South Florida.

Currently one of 40 local artists displaying at Artisans on the Ave, Betty has been with this eclectic gallery for over five years. She sees the gallery as a great venue for exposing art lovers to the amazing variety of local talent. Most recently, the gallery has been having workshops and presentations by several of its artists. Betty is also the owner of The Craft Gallery on Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach. There Betty is able to explore her love of clay and glass and share her knowledge with others. The Craft Gallery offers workshops and classes by a variety of artists and has studio space available for rent by the hour. Betty loves to have local artists share their passion and expertise with others, so her gallery is a great place to expand one’s artistic skills.

But, it’s Betty’s history that will give you an idea of just how much of a fixture she is in the local art world. Decades ago Betty had a hand-painted clothing line named “Made Ugly by Me!” – yes, she has a terrific sense of humor! Her next exploration was clay and this self-taught artist worked with other artists to develop her own unique style. From there she ventured into ceramics, fused glass and encaustic wax, taking workshops from masters of the various crafts. Betty eventually displayed in juried art shows, created art in public places and had a presence in local art galleries. Soon she started her own gallery which grew into several businesses over the years, allowing her to spread the joy of beautiful art. President of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches, she also serves on local boards and arts councils.

When you talk to Betty about her craft, she sees her fused glass art as an extension of her sculptural clay work. Betty says she loves the textures and exciting interplay of light and color when she peeks into the red-hot, glowing kiln. There she sees the soft, molten liquid melting together in one brilliant form. Her biggest thrill is 15 hours later, when she opens the kiln to see the fascinating and extraordinary design that has taken place. Mixing layers of hand-cut, transparent, opaque and iridescent glass together with a little copper, her designs are truly one-of-a-kind. Betty’s fused glass faces give off so much energy that people say they make them smile.

Betty says her work is never about clay or glass. It’s about what the media can do for her art and what she is trying to express. She hopes that others are filled with the joyful light and energy that her art creates. In short, Betty is the light behind her art and she is all about spreading the light – and joy – to everyone around her.

“Creative Spirit” Hand made polymer clay flowers

As Lori expresses, “I love exploring new color palettes, and I hope that others will experience the same delight that I get when they see my work!  It is my connection with color and pattern that drew me to polymer clay as the perfect medium for my creative outlet. It is the intensely saturated colors and the details that I can achieve with polymer clay, combined with the wonderful tactile experience of the clay that has me hooked”.

Lori’s polymer clay canes are created by combining custom made colors and shaping them into sheets or rods of clay to make patterns or images. When the cane is sliced, the image or pattern reveals a pleasant surprise!

Lori started to experiment with all of the mixed media products and incorporated the polymer clay with the mixed media.  There are no boundaries or limits to what additional items you choose to incorporate into the polymer clay to tell your story.

Lori tells us, ” I use the polymer clay flowers and fiber as my focal point which adds the dreamy iridescence near the center of the flowers. I then layer with gauze, gelato pens, acrylic paint, stamped images, pigment ink, embossing powder and additional mixed media. I’m always challenging myself and experimenting with new techniques and styles. Polymer Clay has allowed me to find the creative spirit within. My drive to create is fierce and strong as I passionately put my heart into all of the art I create”.
