• If you are unable to attend the live session or would like a second look at the session, the replay will be available later that evening.

I’d love for you to join the live sessions so I can demonstrate for you personally and address any of your specific questions.

“It’s no secret that the world is looking a little different right now. We’re living through unprecedented times, and we’re all in the same boat: our typical routines have been upended, and we’re all finding ourselves at home with far more time to ourselves. This time can feel a little bit isolating and scary – trust me, I know how you feel! – but there is plenty that we can all do to make the most out of our personal situations, and stay in a positive headspace. I’m sharing a few of my suggestions to maintain productivity, a sense of routine, and make the most of this down time.

I’m hoping to spread some of this positivity to you by offering you this discount code. You can apply this towards Dazzling Daisies and Vibrant Tui Bird! Each of these courses include a bonus painting (of a silly sheep that stuck his tongue out at me during a trip to New Zealand!), so you get demonstration sessions for two full paintings”!

These courses also include one-on-one feedback time with me, as well as an invitation to the Caryl Fine Art workshop participants Facebook group to connect with other artists, if you’re craving some additional social time like I have been. Caryl Pomales Reminds Us To Stay In Touch With Our Imagination And Curiosity! See Her Newest Artworks, Take An On-Line Workshop, Sign Up For Palette Knife Workshop In March

Caryl Pomales understands that an artist’s journey is equal parts studying technique and reawakening our childlike wonder and imagination. She reminds us to strip away the bricks of self-judgment, self-censorship, and “practicality” that build walls preventing us from coloring outside of the lines and seeing the world in a different light.  Caryl offers on-line workshops and will offer a palette knife painting workshop at the New Studio of the Visual Arts March 26/27.   The Rickie Report shares her newest abstract paintings and reminds you to sign up for her artsy newsletter! A portion of the proceeds from the sale of her original paintings are donated to carefully selected charities that care and support our environment and animals in need.

“Everyone starts off as an artist. The trick is remaining that way.” – Pablo Picasso

“An Ocean Of Mighty Mystery” by Caryl Pomales

Do you remember playing pretend as a child? The entire world was an adventure. Any backyard could become a magical realm, with each dewy blade of grass a possible home for a fairy; each towering oak tree a hideout for elves and dwarves; every last gust of wind the breath of a dragon. Our younger selves embraced the imaginative, without self-censoring and bringing ourselves “back to earth.” Somewhere in the process of growing older, we trade in this spirit of creative curiosity for strict practicality, and all too often, the infinite colors and dimensions seen by young eyes dim and fade.

“Celebrating Joy” by Caryl Pomales

An artist’s journey is equal parts studying technique and reawakening this childlike wonder and imagination. We have to strip away the bricks of self-judgment, self-censorship, and “practicality” that build walls preventing us from coloring outside of the lines and seeing the world in a different light.

“The Tropical Garden Parfait” by Caryl Pomales

Imagination is a beautiful thing, and I try to exercise mine every day! Though I often paint subjects that are based on my natural tropical surroundings, I use my imagination to capture the essence and feeling of these items in a dynamic and vibrant way that is more abstract than “realistic” in the standard sense of the word. I give myself permission to see the world around me in different colors that spark a feeling. Does a child coloring question every crayon he or she picks up, wondering if that’s the most realistic shade? Most often, no! He or she picks the color that gets the mind and heart going, whirring with creativity and the feeling the drawing ignites.

“No Sun Outlasts It’s Sunset” by Caryl Pomales

We spend too much time stifling our own imaginations. Today, I ask you to let yours soar. Give yourself the opportunity to see the world through a child’s eyes, and return to that magic. Remember: you were born with imagination and creativity, and as Picasso says, you started off as an artist. Today, try your hardest to hold on to that. You may enjoy seeing your backyard return to that magical realm once again!

“The Mermaid’s Pearls” by Caryl Pomales

“Mistakes” and “Blunders” as Feedback!

How do YOU define a mistake, and why does that word have a negative connotation?

I believe in the power and beauty of mistakes. I believe that failures are feedback. I believe in the positivity of errors. I want you to as well, both as an artist and in your daily life!

Learning is nothing more than a series of decisions and actions that provide you with feedback. Infants take a few shaky steps and fall down a hundred time when learning to walk. When learning to ride a bike, children tumble over before finding their balance. Students misspell words and mix up letters before piecing together the alphabet and learning to read. Getting these things “wrong” early on in life rarely causes distress, discouragement, or anger. These “mistakes” are shaken off as the infant tries again, getting closer to walking with each attempt; as the kid gets back on the bike without the training wheels; till the students finally are able to get through an entire book. The “errors” are learned from and aren’t dwelled upon!

“The Charm of Luberon” by Caryl Pomales

At some point, whether from fear of what others are thinking, from societally or personally opposed pressure to meet arbitrary benchmarks, or from plain insecurity, so many of us find ourselves fearful of failure and dwelling on our mistakes. We’ve stopped looking at “mistakes” and “failure” as feedback and a learning experience. Lessons and opportunities to grow are true gifts! Any time you attempt something that doesn’t go the way you wanted it to, you are provided with the chance to learn. This is not a bad thing, it is beautiful!

As an artist, I value these opportunities for many reasons. First and foremost, the only true mistake you can make on a work of art is quitting. How many paintings were caused by “mistakes?”Julia Margaret Cameron, a famous Victorian-Era photographer, developed her signature “style”accidentally. Her hallmark of fame was her out-of-focus photographs and smeared images! So many other artists develop their taste and style after things went off-course and unplanned. Lean into these “imperfections;” see the beauty in the stray brushstroke, the color that turned out differently than you’d hoped, or the splattered paint!

“With Joy” by Caryl Pomales

Second, there are no true mistakes in art. The sooner you embrace this, the more you’ll see your practice flourish! Letting go of the pressure to be “perfect” and avoid “failure” makes painting more joyful, fun, and inspiring. Do not be afraid of things turning out differently than you’d intended!

Third, embrace and learn from the things you’ve tried and don’t like. If you aren’t happy with the way a painting turned out, identify the things you’d like to work on. Learn from this feedback. Do you need to work on your values? Great! Now you know! Do you want to work on your brushstrokes? The painting you’re unhappy with is a benchmark for you, and now you know which direction to go! Each “mistake” and “failure” is an opportunity to check in, learn, and grow.

Try letting go of being a perfectionist, and start believing in the power and beauty of making “mistakes”.

“Perfectionism is not the same thing has striving to be your best. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgement, and shame. It’s a shield. It’s a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.” ― Brené Brown

Painting as Life’s Great Companion

“Painting is a companion with whom one may hope to walk a great part of life’s journey.” -Winston Churchill

Caryl Pomales tells The Rickie Report, “Art has been a treasured companion in my life since early childhood, when I discovered my love for creating vibrant and colorful pieces on any paper or canvas I could get my hands on. Painting has stuck by my side as a close friend during my diversified career paths, in which I explored different fields but couldn’t devote all my time and energy to my true passion. Finally, art has been a long-time friend I’ve been able to reconnect with, greeting me with open arms and welcoming me back, as I’ve made it my career”.

“Rose” by Caryl Pomales

“I personally love thinking of painting as a companion in life. This has felt remarkably applicable in my journey, as it has been a comfort, a joy, and a judgment-free pleasure that I’ve been able to return to time and time again every step of the way. Like a trusted and true companion, my relationship with painting has evolved as my life experience has grown and expanded. Our “conversation topics” and “dialogues” have broadened as I’ve explored more of the world and broadened my horizons. As I have gone on journeys across the globe, I am constantly thinking of my tried-and-true companion. I collect images with this in mind, snapping pictures that inspire me, keeping an eye out for potential subjects, and noticing and appreciating the colors, shapes, people, and animals that surround me. No matter where in the world I have been, I always return home ready to paint”.

“Picasso’s Virtue of Curiosity” by Caryl Pomales

A true passion sticks with you loyally, and is not easy to shake. My personal story serves as evidence of that. Despite my diversified careers, each fulfilling and successful in its own way, I have always found my way back to painting as my companion and true passion. This love, present from my days on the playground, sketching animals in colorful crayons and markers, never dwindled across the years, and has been present throughout a huge portion of my life’s journey.

Winston Churchill profoundly noted how painting can accompany you throughout your journey, and I have found this to be an absolute truth in my life. I hope that, whatever your passion may be, you’re able to bring it along with you on your path!
