Fiber And Mixed Media Artist Andrea Huffman Announces: Exhibit That Benefits Dune Restoration, Free Family Activities, Presentation And Workshop Now Through February, 2022

Catching up with fiber and mixed media artist, Andrea Huffman means putting on your running shoes and getting out your calendar! Andrea will donate 20% of sales from her Exhibit “Listening To The Sky” at BACA (Bailey Contemporary Arts) Exhibit for the Dune Restoration Project on Pompano Beach in conjunction with South Florida Audubon (NOW through February 23, 2022). The public is invited to a docent led tour and family activity on Saturday, December 11, 2021. Space is limited! On Saturday, December 18, 2021 enjoy a FREE “Creative Making Event” at the Blanche Ely House. Andrea will host as a Guest Presenter at BACA on the evening on Thursday, January 20, 2022 for “Citizen Science: Bird Banding in Paradise” and “Planting for Life”. Create your own bird print on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at BACA.  The Rickie Report shares ALL of the details and some SNEAK PEEKS.

About Andrea Huffman:

After attending the High School of Art and Design in New York City, Andrea Huffman moved to Florida, and received a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Florida International University.  She taught art for 31 years in Broward County Public Schools and retired from full time teaching in 2011 to pursue her own art practice.  Ms. Huffman has since exhibited locally and nationally in solo, juried, and group shows.  Receiving several awards for her work, including several Broward County Creative Investment Grants, Ms. Huffman was selected as one of only two Florida art educators for the first State Teachers Artist in Residence (STAR) program at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Sarasota, awarded through the Florida Alliance for Arts Education in 2011.  She continues to share her passion for art through new teaching opportunities, including The Boca Museum Art School, Bailey Contemporary Art in Pompano (where she is a resident studio artist), as well as various other guilds and art centers throughout Florida.  Ms. Huffman is a member of the Surface Design Association and a co-founder of 6 Hands Collaborative, where she creates, exhibits, curates, and teaches art in collaboration with other artists.

Fortunes & Love Letters Workshop
January 25

 11 am – 2 pm    $25

Create an original artwork to celebrate the Lunar New Year or Valentine’s Day. Artist Andrea Huffman will begin with a brief discussion about color and composition, while enjoying a cup of tea and fortune cookies. The fortunes, along with Postage Stamps and other ephemera, will then be incorporated into collages on canvas. Paint, stencils, rubber stamps and other embellishments will be added to create a beautiful reminder of the Words of Wisdom in your fortune, or to share with a special Valentine. Participants may also bring their own collage materials as well, to include in their artwork.

Creative Artmaking Workshop: The Art of Head Wrapping
February 15

 11 am – 1 pm   $10

The African headdress can be traced back to the Nubian empire and ancient Egypt where priests and the nobility adorned themselves with intricate head wraps. This art form has experienced a resurgence in popularity in contemporary culture, join us for two hours of creativity, great conversation, and culture during this interactive workshop! Enjoy step-by-step instruction and live demonstration of head wrap styling techniques and cultural significance. These skills will allow you to mix and match designs to create dozens of chic, fun head wrap styles. All of our styles are gentle, easy and take only minutes to create. Switch it up every day showcasing that natural hair is versatile and creative. This class is a live, in-person tutorial that will walk you through the steps needed to create each of the styles. We also seek to educate women of color on their history so that you wear them with confidence and poise! Not to mention, it’s the best go-to when you’re having a bad hair day!

With today’s rapid advancement of technology, artists have access to a wide array of new tools to propel their professional careers. Creating video has become an integral part of captivating potential audiences and promoting art in the digital age.  Video Skills for Creatives, made possible by the PNC Foundation’s PNC Arts Alive and the Broward County Cultural Division, provides free workshops designed to lay the groundwork for artists to harness the power of video media and reach a wider audience.

In this FREE workshop, artists will learn how they can use their studio time to connect with others, share their expertise, build community and find buyers for their work — all while making art!  Join us for a 3-hour workshop lead by Dimitry Chamy, designer, artist and faculty mentor at FIU’s Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator.

 

Dimitry Chamy is a multidisciplinary designer and educator experienced in graphic design, coding, and animation who has a passion for pattern, 3D modeling & visualization, visual languages and systems, and creative workflows. He excels at directing projects from concept to completion while tying multiple strands and media into a unified experience.

Chamy has a long track record of creating exceptional branding and design work for new and established brands across many sectors including education, finance, fashion, technology, banking, law, and cultural non-profits. He has taught at six universities, mentors younger designers & developers, and trains his own clients while exploring new ways to use design as a force for good.

Learn techniques to combine drawing and painting in exciting ways. Explore the thrill of combining ink and water to produce intriguing translucent images. The workshop will demonstrate how to make and techniques on how to use ink wash along with sketch pen techniques to create texture. Participants will combine ink wash & pen to create a complete Pen & Ink Illustration. Work from your own or supplied photos. All supplies provided.  Instructor Kimberley Maxwell was born in Canada and resides in South Florida. Fabric Covered Mini-Journal – Bailey Contemporary Arts

Fabric covered journals by Andrea Huffman

 

Fabric covered mini-journal is a workshop taught by BaCA’s Artist in Residence, Andrea Huffman. Embark on a journal–real or imagined with your own extraordinary fabric covered journal. A small, personal stamp will be designed, carved and then printed on fabric for the book cover. Pages will be created using a variety of design techniques, including stenciling, stamping, and painting. A selection of threads and other embellishments can be used to make each journal truly unique. Along with the journal, participants will also leave with their hand-carved stamp to use on future projects.

 

 

 

Fiber artist Andrea Huffman received a Master’s degree in Art Education from Florida International University and taught art in Broward Public Schools for over 30 years. She has exhibited her art throughout Florida and nationally, receiving numerous awards and recognitions, including several grants and a Residency at the prestigious Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, Florida. Although Ms. Huffman has retired from teaching in the public school system, she continues to share her passion for art teaching classes and workshops in fiber art and mixed media at various art venues and guilds throughout Florida.

One of a Kind Tote bags by Andrea Huffman

 

 

 

Make a fashion statement at the farmers market or beach with your own original fabric tote bag.  This even is taught by Artist in Residence, Andrea Huffman. Each participant will design a large canvas zipper tote bag using various fabric paints, photo transfers, stamps and stencils. A hand carved stamp will be created to print on the bag, that can also be used for future projects. A variety of techniques will offer a wide range of options to create a functional work of art!
