Over these seven days, thousands of viewers will join us to celebrate the uniquely American art form of quilting.  Whether you want to look at beautiful examples of traditional, modern, or art quilts, if you’d like to buy a quilt, learn how to quilt, attend a lecture, or shop for supplies, BQE has it all!

And BQE is not just for quilters!  In 2019 we will also be welcoming the entire community with many new activities,  NOT confirmed at press time – please check website for latest updates!

  • Lounge and relaxation station.
  • Food trucks.
  • Community events before quilt week.
  • Family-friendly tickets.
  • Much more to be announced!

Vendors will have yards upon yards of fabulous fabric, sewing notions and patterns. Woven wearable’s,art cloths, Japanese threads and much more. New this year is a vendor demonstration area with various quilting and sewing techniques, how to use various tools on the market and much more. All six guilds will be hosting a “Guildtique” with hand made items for sale, basket walk and charity quilt raffles.

To make it a family event, Food Trucks will be on hand, so you can take a lunch break and then continue to view the wonderful quilts and shop the vendor floor. New this year is the addition of quilt sales. You can now purchase the quilts on display.

BQE is the work of the East Sunrise Quilt Guild, Southern Stars Quilt Guild, Coral Springs Quilters, West Broward Quilters, South Florida Modern Quilt Guild and Quilting in the Pines Guild. Art Synergy is a 501 (c) 3, not for profit arts organization founded in 2013. The fruit of the labors of Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis and Freddy Hennevelt grew out of the original Think Tank,. It has flourished through grassroots efforts beginning with a partnership with Art Palm Beach.  Currently, Rolando Chang Barrero, President and Ilene Gruber Adams, Vice President are managing the organization along with the support of many artists and art lovers in the community. Volunteers and board members are always welcome.

By March 2017, Art Synergy will have organized 6 juried exhibition that have provided Florida based artists to have their work seen, and collected by national and international collectors and art patrons. Also, Art Synergy assists nine Florida art districts organize, promote and market over 65 exhibitions in each year throughout the Palm Beach and Martin County durning Art Palm Beach week which was initiated January 2014.

The nine art districts are: Antique Row Art District,Boynton Beach Art District,Delray Art Art District,Lake ParkArt District,North Palm Beach Art District,Lake Worth Art District,Northwood Village Art District,West Palm Beach Art District,Palm Beach Art District.

In 2016 Art Synergy was classified as a 501 (c) 3 not for profit arts organization which will allow for contributions and donations to a fund currently being created to allow needy families join experiential cultural experiences. This was possible because of the generosity of David and Lee Ann Lester of Next Level Fairs who donate exhibition spaces (Booths) at 2 of the Next Level Fairs: Art Palm Beach and Art Boca Raton.

ART SYNERGY is a countywide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community. ART SYNERGY’s future goals include events that will happen periodically throughout the year, the addition of more participating art districts, and initiatives that help unify the many diverse art entities, and talented artists that Palm Beach County has to offer. With the help of local CRAs, Public Arts Departments, the DDA in WPB and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County (to name a few), ART SYNERGY has only one place to go… onward and upward.

ANNOUNCING:

PAINT PALM BEACH EN PLEIN AIR 2017 (Formerly the Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival)

March 8-12, 2017

Lighthouse ArtCenter announced today the names of the 35 artists selected to participate in the 2017 Paint Palm Beach en Plein Air competition now in its 4th year at North Palm Beach County’s critically acclaimed art gallery and education center. The event will take place March 8-12, 2017. Plein Air has become a popular competition throughout the world, giving artists different venues to create in, while being challenged by the length and surroundings of the four-day contest. The selected artists compete for prize money and are able to display their work at the Lighthouse ArtCenter for gallery visitors to view, offer their opinions and purchase a favored painting at the Collector’s Party on Saturday, March, 11th, final day of competition. Paintings may also be purchased “wet” from the artist at the painting sites.
“We modified this year’s artist selection process after an outstanding 2016 competition,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Chair of Painting and Drawing and Co-Chair of this event, Ted Matz. “Feedback from our former contestants suggested we narrow our field of artists to give each participant more exposure to the crowds drawn to watch them when they’re sketching and painting at the various venues. ”
With more than 120 applicants for the limited slots, Matz said the selection process became one of scoring several criteria, not all of which were based on direct artistic skills. “We wanted to be fair to artists who may not have participated in our Plein Air competition in the first three years. And fair to the Lighthouse ArtCenter patrons who want to see how new artists interpret our local scenery when challenged to capture it on canvas.”

The 35 artists selected scored highest when evaluated by the following:
1. Originality
2. Overall Quality
3. Consistency of Style
4. Technical Skills
5. Marketability to Audience

“We are thrilled by the artistic diversity selected to compete in March 2017,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter Curator Janeen Mason. “We had submissions from artists in 27 states and two who are international. We are excited to see how these artists translate our South Florida seascapes, landscapes and architecture.”

Emily tells The Rickie Report, “I call myself a sculptural basketmaker. I am known for my innovative, “transordinary” vessels. Challenging the original definition of basketry, I explore contemporary interpretations of this traditional craft, utilizing non-traditional materials. I transform the ordinary through the processes of manipulation, construction, alteration, repetition of singular elements, coiling, weaving and assembling to create dense arrangements of common, urban objects. I sculpt with fiber and interact with material, pattern, color, design, shape and texture.”

Growing up in New Jersey in the 50s,, Emily Dvorin was told that her creativity and artistic approach were “cute”. A sea kelp basket workshop in the early 80s changed her life forever: she realized that basketry and three-dimensional work were what she truly loved. Largely self-taught, Emily began offering workshops the 90s and in the early 2000s brought basketry classes to elementary and high school classrooms. In 2008, after owning and operating a contemporary craft store for 35 years, and enabling other artists to gain wider audience and appreciation for their work, Emily retired to live her life’s dream of being a full-time artist. She now has a studio in Sausalito, California. She continues to teach classes for both adults and children, and she speaks, consults and exhibits all around the country. This year she became president of the National Basketry Organization.
Emily’s presentation for the guild, TRANSORDINARY VESSELS, will highlight her work as a sculptural basketmaker using materials from the hardware store, cable ties and other found objects to create whimsical and imaginative art pieces

Emily will also be giving a 2 day workshop, APPROACHING BASKETRY, on Thursday and Friday, Jan 7 – 8, 2016. Through a hands-on approach to many basketry techniques we will explore process, structure, design and surface texture while experimenting with a variety of materials. Beginners and experienced artists alike will enjoy this unique look into contemporary basketry.

Members will receive registration preference, however, a limited number of seats may be available for the public beginning Dec. 16th. For workshop information contact Erica Howat at ericahowat@mac.com
