ANNOUNCING:

PAINT PALM BEACH EN PLEIN AIR 2017 (Formerly the Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival)

March 8-12, 2017

LACpaint-palm-beach-logo_orig2017.jpg

Lighthouse ArtCenter announced today the names of the 35 artists selected to participate in the 2017 Paint Palm Beach en Plein Air competition now in its 4th year at North Palm Beach County’s critically acclaimed art gallery and education center. The event will take place March 8-12, 2017. Plein Air has become a popular competition throughout the world, giving artists different venues to create in, while being challenged by the length and surroundings of the four-day contest. The selected artists compete for prize money and are able to display their work at the Lighthouse ArtCenter for gallery visitors to view, offer their opinions and purchase a favored painting at the Collector’s Party on Saturday, March, 11th, final day of competition. Paintings may also be purchased “wet” from the artist at the painting sites.
“We modified this year’s artist selection process after an outstanding 2016 competition,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Chair of Painting and Drawing and Co-Chair of this event, Ted Matz. “Feedback from our former contestants suggested we narrow our field of artists to give each participant more exposure to the crowds drawn to watch them when they’re sketching and painting at the various venues. ”
With more than 120 applicants for the limited slots, Matz said the selection process became one of scoring several criteria, not all of which were based on direct artistic skills. “We wanted to be fair to artists who may not have participated in our Plein Air competition in the first three years. And fair to the Lighthouse ArtCenter patrons who want to see how new artists interpret our local scenery when challenged to capture it on canvas.”

The 35 artists selected scored highest when evaluated by the following:
1. Originality
2. Overall Quality
3. Consistency of Style
4. Technical Skills
5. Marketability to Audience

“We are thrilled by the artistic diversity selected to compete in March 2017,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter Curator Janeen Mason. “We had submissions from artists in 27 states and two who are international. We are excited to see how these artists translate our South Florida seascapes, landscapes and architecture.”

ManonSanderRight Turn

“Right Turn” by Manon Sander

Born in West Berlin, Germany, Manon grew up in Berlin and Bavaria. Being exposed to the best of both worlds led to Manon’s appreciation for a metropolitan city’s cultural riches but also to her intimate connection to the outdoors of beautiful Bavaria with its lakes, mountains and quaint little villages. Her childhood days were mostly spent either drawing and painting or roaming around outside. Parents who would frequently point out the importance of never to lose one’s sense of wonder in regards to nature’s beauty planted the seed in Manon to pay attention to details of her surroundings, making it easy for her to find inspiration where ever she goes. Creating art to this day never feels like a pastime but like a necessity.

Aiming for Birdie

“Aiming for Birdie” by Manon Sander

After moving with her husband to Chicago, Manon pursued her love of painting by painting murals which are represented in numerous private homes and stores in Illinois, Michigan, Florida and California. Getting introduced to the work of well- known Californian impressionist painters as well as moving to the San Francisco area in 2006 were the igniting sparks to plunge herself into plein air and studio painting in oil. Living in Marin County provided a unique opportunity to study with the best and to finally combine Manon’s love of the outdoors with the portability of oil paints to create on the spot. Oils became quickly her favorite medium, allowing her to have an ongoing conversation with her subject. Under the watch of distinguished and renowned artists, Manon studied how to make a painting that combines rich texture and vivid color while capturing the expression of her subject and the impression it left on her.

Squawk Squad

“Squawk Squad” by Manon Sander

In 2010 painting Marin’s vast variety of water, hills, incredible flora and fauna, unique structures and last but not least that almost palpable golden Californian light was replaced by all that sunny, buggy, and wonderful Florida has to offer. Manon and her family moved to Palm Beach County, where she dipped right into painting the trademarks of a tropical setting which proves to provide her with a never-ending stream of inspiration and an almost magnetic attraction to the ocean and its surroundings.

Manon using her skis as the easel

In addition to painting en plein air, Manon often picks random objects like items found in a tool box or Oreo cookies and a glass of milk for a still life set-up. To Manon it doesn’t matter so much what she paints, since she is mostly interested in the effect the light has on an object. Capturing the light is what drives Manon to make a painting.

Comfort Zone

“Comfort Zone” by Manon Sander

Manon puts down her impressions in thick juicy oil paint, applied with gusto and bold brushstrokes: the sunlight that creates lavender shadows on the white clothing of people walking by the water’s edge deep in conversation; surfers and paddle boarders catching an aquamarine wave; boats at rest and on a journey; sea creatures and birds that call Florida their home, are among the countless things that get her so excited that she can’t wait to get out her paints and easel to capture them on canvas. It is happiness and love of life Manon aims to share with the viewer in paintings that reflect the color, light and joy that she is surrounded by and is ever so grateful for.

Lifesaver

“Lifesaver” by Manon Sander

Manon is very active in the “plein air scene” and has been juried into the 3rd annual Plein Air Festival at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta from March 9-13 which attracts top national talent and is not to be missed!  She will also participate in “Plein Fun”, a painting competition in Delray Beach February 20th, and the Winter Park “Paint Out” by the Albin Polasek Museum from April 24-30.

You can also see Manon’s Artwork at:

  • ArtPalmBeach2016 in the ArtSynergy booth from January 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach.

  • “Wild Florida” at the Cornell Museum in Delray Beach from January 14 – April 17.

  • “Nostalgic Delray” at the Delray Beach Historical Society

  • “Floral Fusion 2016” at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, January 15th to February 28 .

  • Manon has four paintings in Jim Snyder’s new book: “James D. Snyder: A Trip Down the Loxahatchee”, focusing on the river’s history and beauty in paintings and photographs. Pharos Books, 2015. p. 12, 16, 96, 97

Manon tells The Rickie Report,”Painting is my way to bring attention to the beauty found everywhere in our immediate surroundings, seen by those who are willing to slow down and look.  I find inspiration for my next painting not necessarily in an object considered beautiful in the conventional sense since my desire to paint is mostly ignited by watching the light hitting an object a certain way. Illuminating something in all its brilliance while creating wonderful colors and designs in the shadows, light has the power to elevate an object from the mundane to the exquisite. How light influences color has been a source of endless fascination for me. Expressing my joie de vivre through loose brushstrokes in combination with a well thought-through design and a vibrant color choice translates into a painting that resonates not only with me as artist but also with the viewer, offering him a view of things that might otherwise have gone unnoticed”.

Tall Stack

“Tall Stack” by Manon Sander

Manon’s paintings continue to be exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions in California and Florida, have won awards and are in private collections on three continents. She teaches oil painting through the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, FL. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, North County Art Association and Artists’ Guild of Lighthouse ArtCenter.

Gerri wants to offer the audience a review of Contemporary Art from the Impressionists up to the 21st century, showing that Contemporary Art all has to do with artists relating their artwork to the times. Their art expresses concepts and ideas that are current and includes what the public is involved with and thinking about. Very often the general public thinks that contemporary art is out of context and taken from left field but that is not the case, at all. All in all, the lecture will heighten the experience of people who take advantage the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s bus tour opportunities.

Gerri Aurre earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and was a career Art teacher in New York. She has traveled worldwide throughout her life. Her art is about landscape, the figure and abstraction coming from the essence of those travel experiences. Aurre is the President of the North County Artists Association.

Celebrate the Artful Back Alley

Award Winners surprise with cutting-edge paintings!

Twenty local artists created large-scale murals on a 200-foot long outdoor wall, while more than 300 visitors enjoyed watching the acrylic paintings come alive. The inaugural Back Alley Mural Festival was a collaborative, community event held at Gallery Square North in Tequesta on September 19-20, 2015. The murals will be on view in the public space for one month, culminating with a festive Art Stroll to celebrate the artful back alley on October 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free to members of the Lighthouse ArtCenter and to the public.

Presented by the Lighthouse ArtCenter, the festival was a celebration of the power of art in public places. “As the ArtCenter is eco-friendly, no aerosols were used for the paintings,” said Cynthia Trone, Director of Education at the Lighthouse ArtCenter. “The murals created conversation, new friendships, artistic inspiration, and fueled a growing sense of community in the small Village of Tequesta.”

LACMuralFlorida Faucet, Manon Sander

“Florida Faucet” by Manon Sander

Julie Silk Beaumont, muralist and owner of Village Art Studios, saw the potential of creating a local, neighborhood art-centered outdoor painting event for “sunbirds, so we intentionally scheduled the event before the arrival of the busy ‘snowbird’ season.”

  • In keeping with the easy-going camaraderie of the event, winners were chosen by Peoples’ Choice Award votes:  First Place was awarded to Mark Rupprect, a local graffiti artist and fine art teacher. Signing his work “Bulks”, he is known for his bold and colorful designs, Mark was a crowd favorite with his striking chrome, black and white Flamingo and Alligator.

  • Second Place went to Lighthouse ArtCenter faculty member Marta Llorens. An artist and conceptual thinker from Barcelona, Spain, Marta created her first large-scale contour painting. Her abstract portraits are gaining an audience both abroad and locally and her background in graphic arts, fine arts and historical research is apparent in her fantastic and detailed work.

  • Manon Sander, a local artist and faculty member at Lighthouse ArtCenter, won Third Place. Her “Florida Faucet” was a surreal and delightful departure from her familiar plein air paintings that continue to win her awards and a devoted following of collectors and students. It features a quote by Thoreau which captured the essence of the day, ”It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”

The AR Gallery at 340 NE 4 Street in Delray Beach, FL will open its doors to a summer group show, to include guest  International Artist Brigitte Balbinot on July 17  from 6 – 9PM.  The exhibit titled ‘A Summer Night’ will feature some of Balbinot’s latest works, including paintings from her most recent series Minority which was recently featured at the Cornell Museum of Art in Florida.

Swiss by birth, Brigitte Balbinot is now based in South Florida and travels regularly to the Province of Quebec where she also maintains an art studio. Her work, simple and complex all at the same time, reflects a minimalist approach. Each piece of artwork comprises 30-40 layers of oil paint. The use of various mediums allows the Artist to create rich textures and interesting visual affects that translate her unique vision onto the canvas.

"Joy" by Brigitte Balbinot Oil/Wax on Canvas 18x 18

“Joy” by Brigitte Balbinot                              Oil/Wax on Canvas 18x 18

In her statement, Balbinot says: “I favor abstract painting and use a minimalistic approach in my work. To me simplicity is about bringing order to complexity. When the work is streamlined, it enables the mind to expand. Only then can imagination happen. I love depth and textures; they remind me of what once was.”

"Marrakech" by Brigitte Balbinot Oil/Resin on canvas 20 X 20

“Marrakech” by Brigitte Balbinot                Oil/Resin on canvas 20 X 20

Brigitte goes on to say, “The philosophy Wabi-Sabi from the Zen Buddhist culture that is centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection plays a definite role in my creative process. My paintings sometimes appear to be “scarred” and “worn”, survivors of a long journey having a story to tell… Working with oil paint, pigments and various mediums allow me to create a work that is rich in substance and interesting to look at. I prefer to work large as it creates a stronger focal point that captures the viewer’s attention.”

In a review by Carrie Turner, editor of Fine Art Views (March, 2013), art critic Brian Sherwin is cited, “The compositional structure and use of raw texture in Balbinot’s paintings allow the imagination of the viewer to decipher meaning based on what he or she brings, psychologically speaking, to the viewing experience”.
