Karen Kennedy Offers “Kumihimo Leather Braided Bracelet” Class At “Make & Take” On January 8th

Karen Kennedy, local jewelry maker, is offering a NEW CLASS at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery for a “Make And Take” event on Monday, January 8th.  Create a leather Kumihimo braided bracelet with a hand made hammered steel clasp (made by Karen). This traditional Japanese technique of braiding strands of fibers (silk, leather, etc.) creates intricately colored cords. The ancient weaving method was utilized by the Samurai to create the laces for their armor and battle gear!  You can incorporate beads into the weave, making the possibilities of designs endless! Reservations are a MUST. Pay in advance and get a discount!  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks of Karen’s work.  She will also be selling pieces of her jewelry at the Gallery.

This make ‘n take class will create a black and brown leather Kumihimo braided bracelet with a hammered steel clasp. During class you will learn basic skills of opening and properly closing jump rings, an 8-strand Kumihimo weave, and a demonstration of how to make a hammered steel clasp. Provided in the class fee are the leather, jump rings, and hammered steel clasps of different sizes and shapes (hand made by Karen) – tools will be provided. Feel free to bring your own, if you have them. We will make a weaving wheel from cardboard, or you may purchase a sturdier round Kumihimo weaving wheel for an additional $5.00.

Kumihimo Braided Bracelet with Hand Made Steel Findings by Karen Kennedy

Karen tells The Rickie Report, “I have always been creative and have a wide variety of skills. After I retired, I found myself caring for an elderly relative and unable to leave the house regularly, so I began looking for something that I could do at home and stumbled across the art of weaving chainmail and wire work. My chosen mediums are stainless steel and sterling silver. As much as I love the chainmail, it’s hard on my hands (literally bending steel!) and I began looking for something as beautiful, but softer! That’s when I found Kumihimo. Now I combine bits of wire work and chainmail with Kumihimo to create a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art”!

” Having to work most of my life, I hold a Master’s Degree in Business. As a Client Manager and an award-winning business improvement specialist for International Business Outsourcing Consultants, I traveled internationally… But art was always my first love; I used different crafts and artistry to express my creativity. I’ve dabbled in drawing and oil painting, calligraphy and lettering, sewing and fabric art, and mosaics. Now, making jewelry, I have found my niche”.

“I began with wire work and chainmail, taking classes at a local beading store. Once I had the basics, I began self-teaching by using the Internet to find and take classes or follow tutorials. When I decided I needed to learn advanced techniques,  I took jewelry classes at the Boca Raton Museum Art School. I have an Etsy Store and I am an juried artist at the Flamingo Clay Glass Metal Stone Studio. I have taught small groups on basic wire skills and making bracelets, and college-level business classes”, Karen shares”.

“I began my professional career as an artist for Hallmark in Kansas City. Later I moved to New York City and studied with Milton Glaser while working as a freelance illustrator. I also worked at the New York Shakepeare Festival as a graphic design coordinator. In 2001, Delray Beach became my new home, and I began to concentrate on watercolor painting. In 2008 I created the iconic and much-loved “Dancing Pineapples” mural in Delray Beach which has become identified with the town. I also created and published my first coloring book, “Shoefirmations.”

She is the creator of the large “Dancing Pineapples Mural” which graces the entrance to Pineapple Grove in downtown Delray Beach, as well as numerous private and public commissions. Anita has taught drawing and painting for many years, and is also a talented digital artist. Her favorite medium, however, is watercolor.

MEET INTERNATIONAL ARTIST AND CURATOR:

Meskerem “Meski” Assegued

Elias Sime (b.1968 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is a multi-disciplinary artist working primarily in relief sculpture and architecture. For more than twenty-five years, he has made collage and sculptural assemblage from found objects such as thread, buttons, plastic, animal skins, horn, fabric and bottle tops, alongside organic building materials and binding agents such as mud and straw. Many of the objects come from Mercato, the Addis Ababa open-air market, said to be the largest in Africa, and in particular the market’s Menalesh Tera section—literally “what do you have?”—where trash is repurposed in resourceful ways and its new potential is shared among the community.

Sime has a masterful handling of material, with fluency and pure formal instincts a hallmark of his practice. In the past decade he has sought to better understand the cultural and historic underpinnings of those instincts, traveling with the anthropologist Meskerem Assegued through rural villages in Ethiopia to research ancient rituals still in practice. Sime collects histories and vernacular techniques as much as objects.

One of the most prominent names in the East African art scene, Sime founded, designed and constructed the Zoma Contemporary Art Center in Addis Ababa, an international art center described by the New York Times as “a voluptuous dream, a swirl of ancient technique and ecstatic imagination.” His work has been shown internationally at the Dak’Art Biennale in Dakar, Senegal; the New Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna, Austria; and in the US at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Studio Museum in Harlem; and a survey exhibition that traveled from the Santa Monica Museum of Art, CA, to the North Dakota Museum of Art. Sime designed props and artwork for Peter Sellars’ production of Igor Stravinsky’s opera Oedipus Rex, which has been performed at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Sydney Opera House.  Elias’ work is included in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; Perez Museum of Art, Miami; North Dakota Museum of Art; Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, Gainesville; Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, NH; Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY; and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO.

Meskerem (“Meski”) Assegued, with her artist/inventor/engineer husband Bruce Brown, are residents of downtown Lake Worth. Bruce lives full time in the city, and Meski divides her time between Lake Worth, Addis Ababa and exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the world that she is called upon to curate. She is also the founder of  Zoma Contemporary Arts Center (ZCAC)  which is an artist residency located in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. Over the last 16 years, Meskerem has curated numerous exhibitions both in Ethiopia and abroad. She was also a member of the selection committee for the 2004 Dak’Art Biennale and the 2007 Venice Biennale African Pavilion.

Bruce Brown is famous for his wonderful kinetic marble machines that were in the window of the gallery for several years.  He shares,” I like to watch things move and I like to make things. I could spend an hour watching pelicans and or a tractor moving earth. I can also spend all day shaping wood or bending wire until it becomes the thing I want. Art was a hobby most of my life. My career took me overseas fo many years. I managed computer systems in developing countries for U.S. Government relief and development efforts. Wherever I was, I enjoyed looking into the workshops and seeing things being made. Craftspeople with limited resources make up for it with perseverance and planning. I saw a plumber in Ethiopia drill a faucet hole in a sink by tapping on it with a screwdriver for an hour or so. With each tap, a tiny flake of porcelain broke loose. It seems tedious, but it probably didn’t take any longer than it would take me to drive to the hardware store and buy a carbide drill bit”.

“It seems like rolling ball sculptures and other kinetic art are always in the background somewhere. I see them in movies and commercials frequently. I’m not sure when I knew I wanted to make them, but I remember two pieces in particular that probably pushed me over the edge. Many years ago, I lived in Yellow Springs, Ohio. there was a jewelry store with an elaborate wire-work clock. It had many gears with human wire figures turning cranks and such. I always enjoyed stopping to look at it through the store window. A few years later I was delayed on a flight out of Sacramento. In the terminal was a big glass box with a rolling ball sculpture. I looked at it for hours; it had a wonderful chain lift and a couple of track switches.  I never throw anything electrical or electronic away. I have to take it apart and salvage things. Motors, wires, springs, screws. I like to make my art with what materials and tools I have on hand when I start. Often it begins with a leftover piece of wood…”

Jump into this show if you are En Plein Air, conservationists, or activists who want to save this planet. We have invited Everglades artists to join us, as they use their works to save the Everglades. Once again, this title, as all of our titles, are totally up to your interpretation.

May 12- May 24 :

“Derby Days”

Gallery View

May 12- May 24 : “Derby Days”: This is our show with a “Horse” theme, re-titled. We have a number of equestrian enthusiasts who have been working in our studio, visiting our gallery and asking for works that involve horses. The show is being held earlier this year to reach the equestrian community before they leave the area for the summer.

“Shoe Fetish/ Foot Fetish”

Shoe Fetish Gallery View

July 7- July 19: “Shoe Fetish/ Foot Fetish” This proved to be last year’s favorite show among our patrons who purchased more works than in any other show of the year . We like adding some levity to the hot summer by introducing the foot theme into our mix. Let’s get some pictures of these works into the gallery a few weeks early so we can get some more TV coverage on this. We want to bring the shoe loving crowds into the gallery to purchase your works. Last year some retired shoe manufacturers came into the gallery to buy.

August 4-August 16:

“Peanuts Rising”

Artwork by Bea Doone-Merena

August 4-August 16: “Peanuts Rising” formerly known as “The Male Form” We are repeating this successful special request exhibition. As in the past, this special show came from artists who felt slighted by the creations and shows that mostly feature the female form. They wanted equal time We welcome your interpretations.

August 18 to August 30

” Bread and Roses”

?????   Your Interpretation ?????

August 18 to August 30- ” Bread and Roses” in honor of Women’s Equality Day. The title, “Bread and Roses”, came from the 1912 Laurence Mill strike where women fought for their rights, asking for raises for bread, but for roses in their lives as well. This exhibition honors women, their contribution to the world and to art. Just being a woman in the arts (with or without a message) brings honor to the exhibit.

Art Synergy is a 501 (c) 3, not for profit arts organization founded in 2013. The fruit of the labors of Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis and Freddy Hennevelt grew out of the original Think Tank,. It has flourished through grassroots efforts beginning with a partnership with Art Palm Beach.  Currently, Rolando Chang Barrero, President and Ilene Gruber Adams, Vice President are managing the organization along with the support of many artists and art lovers in the community. Volunteers and board members are always welcome.

By March 2017, Art Synergy will have organized 6 juried exhibition that have provided Florida based artists to have their work seen, and collected by national and international collectors and art patrons. Also, Art Synergy assists nine Florida art districts organize, promote and market over 65 exhibitions in each year throughout the Palm Beach and Martin County durning Art Palm Beach week which was initiated January 2014.

The nine art districts are: Antique Row Art District,Boynton Beach Art District,Delray Art Art District,Lake ParkArt District,North Palm Beach Art District,Lake Worth Art District,Northwood Village Art District,West Palm Beach Art District,Palm Beach Art District.

In 2016 Art Synergy was classified as a 501 (c) 3 not for profit arts organization which will allow for contributions and donations to a fund currently being created to allow needy families join experiential cultural experiences. This was possible because of the generosity of David and Lee Ann Lester of Next Level Fairs who donate exhibition spaces (Booths) at 2 of the Next Level Fairs: Art Palm Beach and Art Boca Raton.

ART SYNERGY is a countywide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community. ART SYNERGY’s future goals include events that will happen periodically throughout the year, the addition of more participating art districts, and initiatives that help unify the many diverse art entities, and talented artists that Palm Beach County has to offer. With the help of local CRAs, Public Arts Departments, the DDA in WPB and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County (to name a few), ART SYNERGY has only one place to go… onward and upward.
