Quilting is not only a $3.7 billion industry…

It is calming!

Everyone you ask will offer a reason, but most quilters agree that this hobby is a welcome and slow-paced escape from our fast and hectic world. Quilting teaches you to be patient and take your time…It’s a bit like meditation, where someone can take time out and forget about everything happening around them. It’s little wonder that quilters say they feel so much more relaxed after a long session.

Broward Quilt Expo is proud to announce its inaugural Broward Quilters’ Airing of the Quilts event.  An “airing of the quilts” is a traditional outdoor event in many communities across the United States and around the world. Airings range from simple displays of quilts on clotheslines to “takeovers” of entire towns such as the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, OR.

Stranahan House – Oldest surviving structure in Broward County, is on the National Register of Historic Places. On the Tarpon River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Frank Stranahan built it in 1901 as a trading post and converted it into a residence for his wife, Ivy, in 2906. Stranahan House Museum

This event is an opportunity for Broward County quilters to bring our work into the community and to celebrate our art. It is a chance to share the unique history of quilting and quilt makers with our visitors. We’ll be displaying quilts on the two covered porches of the house, along the fencing around the house perimeter, and between trees.

Our event is taking place during Fort Lauderdale Art & Design Week (January 19–27, 2019), a result of the desire to unite all of Fort Lauderdale’s arts and cultural institutions in a celebration of everything art and culture throughout the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The ultimate goal in creating this week is to establish Fort Lauderdale as an international cultural destination.
