Photography by Christopher Fay

Photographer Christopher Fay believes recognizing beautiful ART around you constantly is a gift and skill that comes from viewing the world through the Artist’s Eye. The trick is to develop the patience and imagination to recognize it.  From there, each image calls for its own composition.  With the onset of digital photography and many digital photography advancements, new worlds have opened a new age of creating high-quality photographic artwork.  By using various techniques and tools to enhance regular photographs, spectacular results can be achieved in the finished image.

Photography by Hope Kahn

Photographer Hope Kahn uses many different photographic means to capture an image; such as digital cameras, plastic cameras and pinhole cameras. She then applies, a variety of finishing techniques.  Some of the techniques used are historical processes such as Photo Gravure, Cyanotype as well as the use of paper negatives. The common thread in her art is the blending of the realistic into the interpretative – producing a poetic quality to her photographs. Her clients have often called her work “mysterious and otherworldly.”

Photography by Shalini Nopany

Photographer Shalini Nopany is known for both black and white and color images of people and places. Her photographs, which radiate with a woman’s sensibility, freeze a moment in time that captures emotions and actions. Her themes have included motion, emotion, and people’s activities in different settings.

Curator Bruce Helander

Curator Bruce Helander is an art critic, arts writer, curator and artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a former White House fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and has won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts. He is one of two 2014 inductees to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Florida’s most prestigious arts and culture honor (the other is musician Tom Petty).

The 20-poster set features beautifully detailed satellite images of the planet—from the swirling arms of a massive hurricane and the grid-like pattern of Kansas farmland to the triangular shadows cast by the Great Pyramids and the sinuous channels entering the Arctic Ocean. “Earth from Space” illustrates how satellite imagery is gathered and used to expand mankind’s understanding of life on Earth. It also explores the remote-sensing technology used to gather the images and describes the individual satellites whose images are on display.

“The Smithsonian is proud to be able to share illuminating scholarship from the National Air and Space Museum in a format that allows for extraordinarily widespread distribution,” said Anna Cohn, SITES director. “‘Earth from Space’ inspires dreams and discovery, and while the photographs were taken from far away, they can launch learning opportunities about our lives here on earth.”

The poster exhibition was born of the popular and award-winning museum exhibition of the same title that premiered November 2006 at the National Air and Space Museum. In 2007, “Earth from Space” won a U.S. Geological Survey communications award for science content.  The images provide clues about the nature of our planet and offer teachers opportunities to engage students in a broad array of science topics, including geography, environmental studies, ecology, oceanography and meteorology.

An educational companion web site, www.earthfromspace.si.edu, contains an online version of the SITES exhibition, and additional images and information. It also provides numerous educational resources, including lesson plans, classroom activities, web site links and available publications.

“Earth from Space” was developed by the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the National Air and Space Museum, in collaboration with SITES. Andrew Johnston, a geographer at the center and author of “Earth from Space” (Firefly Books, 2004), is the exhibition’s curator.

SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington, D.C., for more than 50 years. SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage through a wide range of exhibitions about art, science and history, which are shown wherever people live, work and play.

In conjunction with the Smithsonian images, CCE has partnered with the South Florida Science Center & Aquarium to combine NASA images taken by photojournalist Gary Rothstein.  These images are comprised of shuttle launches and up-close detail shots of shuttle preparations for space travel.  Famed Florida landscape photographer, Clyde Butcher is also featured with his ‘God Speed’ image on loan that captured Astronaut John Glenn’s ascent as the oldest person to go into space aboard Discovery in 1988.  Exhibition support by the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County.  Also paired with the exhibition is a live performance of ‘The War of the Worlds: The 1938 Radio Script.’  This performance based on the novel by H.G. Wells will be performed live in CCE’s Hilton Theater which combines live performers and digital media in an unprecedented public offering not found anywhere else in Palm Beach County.

‘War of the Worlds’ is patterned after the Lux Radio Theatre program which ran for years through the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Lux Radio Theatre was indisputably the biggest, most important, most expensive drama anthology program on radio. It ran from October 14, 1934 until June 7, 1955, then continued on television as Lux Video Theatre until 1957. In all, some 926 one-hour episodes were broadcast, providing a record of the most important entertainment events in American theatre and, later, film. This production of ‘War of the Worlds’ features local actors and involves the use of live and recorded sound effects.

The first project in the course consists of creating a virtual art exhibit for CCE’s art gallery. After recording the gallery using a camera motion stabilizer, we will then learn how to attach paintings, photographs and other art objects on the walls of the video of the gallery. This is a great opportunity to gain deeper knowledge on a specific artist that we admire and also to apply motion tracking techniques available in After Effects. The second project will combine the fun of recording performative actions in front of the camera and drawing using video! Yes, we tend to think of drawing only on static images but we rarely realize the potential of drawing in video! To wrap up the course, we will create artist statements and discuss what we learned about Motion Graphics.

“Behind The Screen” Exhibit At Center For Creative Education Will Interest All Ages, Opening May 12

The Center For Creative Education understands that movies and music are an escape for many of us. Buying a movie ticket, popcorn, soda, and picking the right theater seat to embark on an extraordinary journey… Or scoring tickets to a concert to see your favorite band perform live… But what happens leading up to that point? What encouraged us to even want to see that movie or go to that concert? A new exhibit,“Behind the Screen”, looks at the details that lead up to such an experience. The public is invited to the Opening Reception on Saturday, May, 12th.  Marketing posters, props and art involved to pitch a story that will present itself on the big screen or on stage are all major keys to success. Posters for both movies and music performances will be highlighted as well as screen printing, which makes up a large number of artworks associated with both movies and music.  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

MOVIES
“Marketers needed “still”  images to convey the plot and to get people’s attention to successfully sell the product. These posters had to be artistically pleasing to make audiences curious about how what is portrayed actually plays out in the film. Posters were created, usually painted by artists like Drew Struzan, that would show many images mixed together to portray the story on a grand scale. Sometimes, posters had a simple image from the movie that was so stunning, the viewer must know what it connects to. For the longest time, posters have succeeded in mixing advertising with artistry.” – The Reel Deal, Andre Haas

“Panic” Seattle Tour

MUSIC
“The beautiful psychedelic gig posters that helped define the 1960s San Francisco rock scene are no longer a lost, joss-stick-scented tradition. Musicians from Arcade Fire and PJ Harvey to Bob Dylan and Liza Minnelli are using limited-edition posters to accompany shows, as an often strikingly original counterpoint to their music. Just as in the old days, the artists silk-screen print by hand in batches of a few hundred… The posters also offer a return to the tangible fantasy world fans have always built around bands, resisting the retreat to music as a digital, invisible experience. “Bands don’t have a 12-inch gatefold sleeve now,” says the Flood Gallery’s manager Tom Warner, “they have a 600 x 600 pixel picture on iTunes. Posters give them an outlet.” – Ultimate pop art – Why gig posters are a sound investment, Nick Hasted
