The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department continues its Artists in Residence (AiR) program with April artist, Shanna Woods. Shanna shares her attuned sense of self-awareness in her Art of Acceptance workshops.  Having gained tremendous acclaim as the choreographer of the award-winning short film “Brown Ballerina”, she loves teaching movement meditation to everyone who is seeking a deeper connection to self.  The Rickie Report shares the details of  events, some sneak peeks of her images, and information to become an AiR. A distinguished panel of judges selected Shanna and the other new artists to be part of our first “graduating class.” This dynamic and diverse group of artists will be in residence though June, and each will be presented as an “Artist of the Month,” during which time they will showcase their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA.  At the culmination of the residency, AiR artists will share their new artworks in an exciting group exhibition.

 

 

Shanna performed internationally with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre, Jubilation Dance Ensemble, and Olujimi Dance Theatre. And her extensive dance studies and performances have covered a vast variety of forms including ballet, tap, Afro-Haitian, Salsa, the ring shout dances of the Congo, Senegal, and many other styles.

 

 

During her residency, Shanna will be conducting several Art of Acceptance Workshops, where she  will incorporate ritual dance movements, meditation, journal work and more. “Art of Acceptance encourages one to look within, appreciate their body as it is with intention to shift paradigms as they see fit,” she explained. “Daily affirmations and self-love are strongly encouraged.”

Art of Acceptance creates, shifts, disrupts colonial ways of learning. How do we relearn to accept our bodies, how do we heal, how do we pass on legacy? This workshop is rooted in accountability, daily reflection, risk management, self-love and community structuring.

 

 

The Art of Acceptance is geared toward working with mothers with young children, mothers with teenage children, mothers with adult children, as well as women independently. The goal is to create an atmosphere that is a safer space where women can support each other, pass on the legacy of rest, and restoration through self-care by implementing tools that are accessible at home and in local stores.

 

 

 

 

 

Thef Sema Paut Neteru translates to “Moving into Union in the company of Gods and Goddesses.” Created by Dr. Dja Ashby and Dr. Muata Ashby, this Kemetic yoga practice enhances awareness of the connection with your mind, your spirit, your body and your inner world in a way that celebrates your autonomy in cultivating inner strength and peace.

Shanna Woods will deliver her Manifesto at Lyrics Lab the popular open mic night.  During her residency at BaCA, she will complete a new dance work entitled “UNaccepted”, which explores her experiences of sifting through her past to become the mother she desires to be. Most people think in order to meditate you must sit with your legs crossed with a completely clear mind. That is not true. Movement meditation creates an opportunity to move through various positions with a mindful and slow pace.

Twenty-five years is a long time for a volunteer 501 (C) (3) organization to exist and succeed in its mission. Our core are musical performers from our area and those who winter here to avoid the cold. But we are more than that; we are educators, citizens supporters of arts, volunteers and hundreds of members who support the Society financially.  We schedule and perform at many venues throughout the year but a major factor in our success is our focus on the future generation, which undoubtedly will take our place”.

Meet  Laura  O’Kelly

 

 

A dedicated professional and passionate music-lover who fell in love with the Treasure Coast when she relocated here from Albany, New York in 1983, O’Kelly has offered one of her spectacular pieces to help raise funds for a Fort Pierce Jazz Scholarship. Each piece is personally signed by the me”.  Laura began taking weekly private art lessons in 2009 and discovered the Jazz Society Market through a colleague in 2011.  She says, ” I wanted a platform for exposure  to market my artwork, so I decided to become a weekly, year-round vendor and the rest is history….from the very first day I’ve maintained a level of professionalism and found success selling my artworks.  I also take commissions, so if a visitor doesn’t see exactly what strikes their fancy, I work with them and create something totally unique!  I have been truly blessed with making my mark in the art community here on the Treasure Coast and the positive result as a professional artist that has followed”.

      LYNN   DOYAL  

“An  Artist’s  Journey  Discovering  Public  Art”

 

 

Lynn Doyal blends contemporary design with a reverence for the techniques of the past.  She incorporates paint, hand stitching and beading, collage, and digital technology in her works to create vibrant, textural pieces.  Digital photographs of her artwork can then be transferred onto a variety of surfaces such as glass, metal, canvas, tile, or vinyl, allowing for expansive reproductions as public art pieces. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

She tells The Rickie Report, “My artwork … provides that ‘breath’ in the course of a person’s day which means a great deal to me.”  Her life-sized originals let the viewer marvel at the intricate detail of Doyal’s mixed media pieces, while her large-scale public art pieces are a captivating, surreal experience.

 

 

 

 

 

In 1979, Doyal received her degree in Fine Art from the University of South Florida. After working in the corporate realm, she started her own company, Signature Chocolates, providing premiums and incentives for corporations, hotels and cruise lines. Since 2011, she has been exhibiting her art in festivals, shows, and galleries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Over the past 6 years, Doyal’s interest in public art has motivated her to serve as an apprentice to a nationally recognized public artist, as well as volunteer in Palm Beach County Art in Public Places, to gain the perspectives of the many individuals and agencies that need to work in concert together to create, fabricate and install public artworks. She explains, “my overall approach to public art is to beautify and surprise.”  Doyal’s current projects include “Word Patterns” which explores the patterns in word search puzzles, and a Portrait Ministry, in which she creates portraits as a way to encourage and uplift others.

I look back and wonder sometimes…”how in hell did I do it?”. The European Gigs were exciting, well received & a whirlwind…Lots of airports, hotels & venues full of adoring fans and very long nights! Traveling thru occupied Germany, before the Wall came down, was an experience that I’ll never forget…. soldiers with guns & serious faces, a quiet descending on the Tour bus occupants while going through “Checkpoint Charlie” handing documents over to the officials to gain entry into East Germany for gigs in Berlin…everyone holding their breath until the papers were stamped & returned”.

Many of Gerard’s pieces are inspired by the Lucumi religion, which survived the slave trade era.  Often mired in secrecy and negative perceptions, the Afro-Caribbean faith serves as a creative force for Pastor who looks to inspire understanding.

During his residency at BaCA, Pastor will focus his work on the study of how women participate in religion and how religion is used as a patriarchal tool to elevate men, when historically the innate power of survival has been through women.

Janet, who has been painting for almost forty years came from an artistic family.  She  studied at the Art Students League in NYC and at Oxbow, a residency program of the Art Institute of Chicago and her work  has been showcased at The Morris Museum in New Jersey.

After being part of Palm House Gallery & Studio in Vero Beach, she founded her own studio where she has been painting since 1918. Janet’s highly imaginative work focuses on figurative subjects, black and white abstractions, colorful abstracts, and stylized landscapes known as ‘red umbrella paintings.’
