Shanna performed internationally with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre, Jubilation Dance Ensemble, and Olujimi Dance TheatreAnd her extensive dance studies and performances have covered a vast variety of forms including ballet, tap, Afro-Haitian, Salsa, the ring shout dances of the Congo, Senegal, and many other styles.

During her residency, Shanna will be conducting several Art of Acceptance Workshops, where she  will incorporate ritual dance movements, meditation, journal work and more. “Art of Acceptance encourages one to look within, appreciate their body as it is with intention to shift paradigms as they see fit,” she explained. “Daily affirmations and self-love are strongly encouraged.”

Saturday, April 8 | Meet Shanna at the Art of Acceptance – Self Care Workshop Series: Kemetic Yoga

1:30- 3:00 PM

Art of Acceptance creates, shifts, disrupts colonial ways of learning. How do we relearn to accept our bodies, how do we heal, how do we pass on legacy? This workshop is rooted in accountability, daily reflection, risk management, self-love and community structuring.

The Art of Acceptance is geared toward working with mothers with young children, mothers with teenage children, mothers with adult children, as well as women independently. The goal is to create an atmosphere that is a safer space where women can support each other, pass on the legacy of rest, and restoration through self-care by implementing tools that are accessible at home and in local stores.

Thef Sema Paut Neteru translates to “Moving into Union in the company of Gods and Goddesses.” Created by Dr. Dja Ashby and Dr. Muata Ashby, this Kemetic yoga practice enhances awareness of the connection with your mind, your spirit, your body and your inner world in a way that celebrates your autonomy in cultivating inner strength and peace.

Wednesday, April 19 |  Meet Shanna @ Lyrics Lab

8:00- 10:00 PM

Shanna Woods will deliver her Manifesto at Lyrics Lab the popular open mic night.  During her residency at BaCA, she will complete a new dance work entitled “UNaccepted”, which explores her experiences of sifting through her past to become the mother she desires to be. Most people think in order to meditate you must sit with your legs crossed with a completely clear mind. That is not true. Movement meditation creates an opportunity to move through various positions with a mindful and slow pace.

Saturday, April 22 | Meet Shanna at the Art of Acceptance- Self Care Workshop Series: Mango Butta

1:30- 3:00 PM

Each participant will get an opportunity to infuse their own jar of whipped mango butter according to their needs. Shanna will share the importance of self-care and how moisturizing your body is a flawless act of self-care.

About the City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department:

The mission of the Cultural Affairs Department is to provide cultural programming that includes visual arts, digital media, music, film, theater, dance and public art for the enjoyment and enrichment of residents and visitors to Pompano Beach, Broward County, and the greater South Florida area. The department programs and manages the City’s premiere cultural arts venues including the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, Ali Cultural Arts Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts Center, and the Blanche Ely House Museum. The department also oversees the City’s Public Art Program and the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts’ Our Town grant awarded to the Pompano Beach Crossroads place-making arts initiative.

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is delighted to relaunch its Artists in Residence (AiR) program at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA).  The AiR Program provides artists with studio space to create new work, collaborate with fellow resident artists, and engage with our community.

Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA) is operated by the City of Pompano Beach’s Cultural Affairs Department (PBCAD) which annually seeks participants for its Artists in Residence Program (AiR). As part of this program, eight studios at BaCA are available to individual artists for a nine-month period from October – June. The 2023 -2024 residency will be available for application in April 2023. Through this residency, PBCAD strives to cultivate an environment where artists can craft their talents and enhance their experience through artistic development and experimentation. The residency’s structure is therefore left relatively open to cater to individuality, spontaneity and collaboration. BaCA should be considered a safe space where all art forms, intellectual and creative pursuits, methods of artistic investigation, and aesthetic inquiry are accepted, nurtured, and celebrated. A dynamic environment will be created through the AiR Program – one that appeals to onlookers and attracts locals and visitors alike to watch the creative process unfold and see the latest output.

Don Bestor, President of FPJS  tells The Rickie Report, “The Fort Pierce Jazz Society, celebrating its 25th Anniversary, manages that Saturday Morning Jazz Market. Taking its mission of quality very seriously and not allowing anything less than the best, FPJ Society certainly makes an effort to be worthy. Twenty-five years is a long time for a volunteer 501 (C) (3) organization to exist and succeed in its mission. Our core are musical performers from our area and those who winter here to avoid the cold. But we are more than that; we are educators, citizens supporters of arts, volunteers and hundreds of members who support the Society financially.  We schedule and perform at many venues throughout the year but a major factor in our success is our focus on the future generation, which undoubtedly will take our place”.

Each year the Society awards 10 – 15  $1,000 scholarships

to young performers

entering college with music as a primary or secondary subject.

Meet  Laura  O’Kelly

A dedicated professional and passionate music-lover who fell in love with the Treasure Coast when she relocated here from Albany, New York in 1983, O’Kelly has offered one of her spectacular pieces to help raise funds for a Fort Pierce Jazz Scholarship. Tickets, which are available at www.jazzsociety.org or at any of Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society’s many weekly gigs and performances as well as at the Saturday Morning Jazz Market, are just $5 each, and you can even get three tickets for just $10. The value of the piece being raffled off is already priceless, but add to that the knowledge that you’ll also be supporting an aspiring young musician who has chosen to further his or her musical education.

Laura O’Kelly holding “Blue Marlin”, which she is donating to the Fort Pierce Jazz Society to raffle for Scholarships

“Blue Marlin” is framed and ready to hang!  Laura O’Kelly has a gift for combining translucent glass, color and light to create an amazing visual effect and a positive energy that will fill the room.  She tells The Rickie Report, ” Our coastal wall décor is done in a sensual and calming palette of the sea.  Each of my art pieces is uniquely designed with the intention and no two pieces will be exactly alike. All our frames are made of wood and the hardware is attached so your piece is ready to hang! Each piece is personally signed by the me”.  Laura began taking weekly private art lessons in 2009 and discovered the Jazz Society Market through a colleague in 2011.  She says, ” I wanted a platform for exposure  to market my artwork, so I decided to become a weekly, year-round vendor and the rest is history….from the very first day I’ve maintained a level of professionalism and found success selling my artworks.  I also take commissions, so if a visitor doesn’t see exactly what strikes their fancy, I work with them and create something totally unique!  I have been truly blessed with making my mark in the art community here on the Treasure Coast and the positive result as a professional artist that has followed”.

For more information about Laura’s artistry:

The art raffle winner will be drawn on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM

Whether you’re purchasing tickets for yourself, as a gift for others, or because you want to help support an aspiring young musician through one of the many scholarships provided by Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society each year, this is one way for everyone to be a winner here on the Treasure Coast and to help ensure that the soundtrack of our lives will continue for generations to come. Don continues, “We share our time and talent with students throughout St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River County providing master classes in music and performance and we invite student musicians to perform with us every Tuesday evening at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce, and every other Wednesday evening at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. We believe in the power of music, and we want to make sure we pass that magic along to the next generation through scholarship, opportunities, and education. There are lots of investments with a much lower return, but we believe in the power of music and the incredible return it gives in the form of education, building teamwork and cooperation, creating and celebrating joy, and creating a legacy of love that will be passed on generation to generation for as long as we are.

      LYNN   DOYAL

“An  Artist’s  Journey  Discovering  Public  Art”

Lynn Doyal blends contemporary design with a reverence for the techniques of the past.  She incorporates paint, hand stitching and beading, collage, and digital technology in her works to create vibrant, textural pieces.  Digital photographs of her artwork can then be transferred onto a variety of surfaces such as glass, metal, canvas, tile, or vinyl, allowing for expansive reproductions as public art pieces.

She tells The Rickie Report, “My artwork … provides that ‘breath’ in the course of a person’s day which means a great deal to me.”  Her life-sized originals let the viewer marvel at the intricate detail of Doyal’s mixed media pieces, while her large-scale public art pieces are a captivating, surreal experience.

In 1979, Doyal received her degree in Fine Art from the University of South Florida. After working in the corporate realm, she started her own company, Signature Chocolates, providing premiums and incentives for corporations, hotels and cruise lines. Since 2011, she has been exhibiting her art in festivals, shows, and galleries.

Over the past 6 years, Doyal’s interest in public art has motivated her to serve as an apprentice to a nationally recognized public artist, as well as volunteer in Palm Beach County Art in Public Places, to gain the perspectives of the many individuals and agencies that need to work in concert together to create, fabricate and install public artworks. She explains, “my overall approach to public art is to beautify and surprise.”  Doyal’s current projects include “Word Patterns” which explores the patterns in word search puzzles, and a Portrait Ministry, in which she creates portraits as a way to encourage and uplift others.

The Center for Great Apes

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Center for Great Apes. CGA is a Florida- based sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees rescued from the entertainment industry, the exotic pet trade and research. These apes have an almost human lifespan and, having lived around humans for most of their lives, they cannot be returned to the wild so they need lifetime specialized care. Great ape advocate and inspired artist Sue Buck has a special bond with these wonderful apes and has undertaken a massive project to draw portraits of many of the more than 80 apes the Center has rescued and cared for over 30 years. In recognition of the Center’s amazing work and Sue Buck’s deep commitment Art4Apes is proud to present a special online exhibition on Art4Apes.com. This exhibition features 20 charcoal and pastel portraits of the 65 great apes Sue has completed. It is Sue’s goal to produce portraits of all 86 of the orangutans and chimpanzees the sanctuary has rescued over the past 30 years. These lovely portraits reflect something of what they have had to endure before finding their happy ending at the Center.

Sue’s    Creative    Process:

This series of photos of a portrait of chimpanzee Mickey shows Sue’s creative process. Starting with a blank canvas and some photos she brings Mickey to life.

Mickey is a 36-year-old male chimpanzee who spent the first 20 years of his life imprisoned in a tiny cage in a dark garage with little opportunity for play or exercise. He arrived at the Center overweight and unfit and terrified of meeting other chimpanzees. Now he loves to run and play with the other six chimpanzees in his group. As he strolls through the overhead tunnel system exploring the sanctuary grounds, Mickey loves to see what’s going on around the Center.

Sue says “My drawings are created with black charcoal and soft pastels. For this work I refer not only to photos but also to descriptions of each individual’s personality and past. Of course these drawings are basically portraits. My goal is always for the drawing to look like the individual’s physical appearance but also to reference their personalities and pasts via marks and colors. Generally each drawing takes about eight hours. The drawings begin very gesturally and eventually go into more and more detail.

I have had the honor and opportunity to visit the Center in May 2017 and May 2018. It was wonderful to meet individuals I have drawn. When drawing them, I try to get to know them via the photos and descriptions often coming from caregivers. Meeting them in person was wonderful for sure.”

Patti Ragan, founder and president of the Center commented “Sue Buck is a wonderful artist who has expressed her love for our orangutans and chimpanzees and shared her talents to capture their personalities in her delightful portraits. We are incredibly grateful for her donations of this amazing body of art.”

Prints of the artworks are available for sale online with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the sanctuary. To purchase prints, visit the online shop

Barbara Bucci Is A Featured Artist At Martin Artisans Guild Annual Open Studio Tour March 11 & 12 With Unique Keepsake Mermaid/Treasure Boxes For Everyone

The Martin Artisans Guild includes Barbara Bucci as one of the Featured Artists during their annual Open Studios from 10 am to 5 pm on March 11 & 12!  Growing up with her late father, renown artist, James J. DeMartis started her journey. Leaving Art School to managing tours of a 6 person rock band in Europe before the Berlin Wall fell, she has lots of adventures to share!  She was most recently a floral designer and owning a floral shop owner in Stuart.  Her well of creativity runs deep, bringing her to creating one of a kind, special “Mermaid/Treasure Boxes” (because even mermaids need a place to keep their treasures).  Varying sizes, themes, and artwork of her own plus the inclusion of her father’s art makes each box a true treasure on its own! The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

Barbara Bucci tells The Rickie Report, “Everything in my life thus far has led me to this exact moment in time. Even when the path was muddied & obscure, it guided me to the Present, full of the riches of what life has to offer.  First Art school, then dropping out of Art school to begin an adventure as a Tour Manager of a rock band in the late 70’s”.

She still marvels, “Can you imagine corralling a Band of 6, plus a road crew across the country & Europe multiple times without a cellphone? I look back and wonder sometimes…”how in hell did I do it?”. The European Gigs were exciting, well received & a whirlwind…Lots of airports, hotels & venues full of adoring fans and very long nights! Traveling thru occupied Germany, before the Wall came down, was an experience that I’ll never forget…. soldiers with guns & serious faces, a quiet descending on the Tour bus occupants while going through “Checkpoint Charlie” handing documents over to the officials to gain entry into East Germany for gigs in Berlin…everyone holding their breath until the papers were stamped & returned”.

Fast forward several decades to another path, described by Barbara as, “a garden path, with plants & flowers, Brides & Events, some joyful, some reflective & some just plain ole fun! I was a floral designer & flower shop owner for 25 years, 19 of which were here in Stuart. I had some old fashioned “on the job training” working in shops in New York, Spokane, Wa., Palm Beach & finally settling here in my adopted hometown of Stuart”.

“Skulls” Mermaid/Treasure box by Barbara Bucci

Some principles in floral design regarding balance, focal point placement, color & overall form of design composition, Barbara found to be somewhat interchangeable with what she is doing now with her Mermaid/Treasure boxes.  Barbara shares, “It all culls from the same deep within Well which is the source of creativity”.

“Macanudo” Mermaid/Treasure box by Barbara Bucci

She says, “In addition to what I have discovered on my own in life about creative processes & Art, I have to credit my late father’s enormous influence in exposing me to the artworks of the Master’s in Museums around the country & in all the places in Europe where we travelled as a family in my early years. These influences grew & multiplied, sometimes quietly, sometimes with a roar!”

“Dino Box” Mermaid/Treasure box by Barbara Bucci

“Years after my father passed, I remember visiting an artist’s studio in New Orleans, & upon entering, I was brought to tears by the smells of the oil paints, varnish & solvents…bringing me back to the years spent in my father’s studios while he painted & created. An area was always set up for my brother & I to do our own painting & drawing, probably intended to just occupy ourselves & keep us out of our father’s hair”.

“Penobscot Bay” Mermaid/Treasure box incorporates a painting by James J. DeMartis

“Sadly, she relates, “my father passed the year I moved to Stuart, but I still feel his presence & influence because I’m literally surrounded by hundreds of his paintings & drawings. The idea of incorporating some of his artworks on paper into my Mermaid Boxes seemed like a natural progression & easy way to continue to honor & preserve his legacy…you might say, “we work well together”.
