Artists and Charities Hand in Hand has opened a National/International Call for 2D, 3D, and  jewelry artists for their upcoming event at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on November 2 and 3, 2019. The participating charities are: Armory Art Center, Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation, and Peggy Adams Rescue League.  This is a unique opportunity to be part of a win-win-win situation!  The artists benefit from sales, the charities benefit from sales and exposure to a new audience, and the art patrons benefit, knowing their purchase promotes local artists and local charities.  The Booth fee for this event includes Pro Panel wall set up!  We urge artists to apply now, before the show is filled!  The Rickie Report shares the details for this premiere event – art patrons, mark your calendars NOW Well-known community leaders and artists will be participating and promoting this event, lending their marketing support and huge following, including a nationally known artist who has over 2 million followers.

Twenty percent (20%) of all art sales will be donated to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation, and the Armory Art Center, divided equally. 

Eighty percent (80%) of sales are retained by the artists.

The Convention Center offers an indoor, air-conditioned, professional venue and plenty of accessible parking.  We offer 100 booths for artists working in any fine art category to show and sell their art in Pro Panel walled booths. The booth walls will be provided to the invited artists.

Application and Exhibition Fees:

Application Fee: $45 (non-refundable)

Exhibition Fee for Invited Artists: $1000-$2000 (includes a 10’ by 10’ exhibition booth with 7’ high Pro Panel walls.). Fee depends upon booth location. First come first served. Double booths may be available on a limited basis and must be arranged through the event organizer.

Show Eligibility

  • All artwork submitted in this application must be designed and created by the applying artist and must be for sale.
  • An artist may enter as 2D, 3D and/or Jewelry, but must provide images of all and indicate which category to which each image belongs.
  • No commercial casts/molds, production studio work or factory produced art is permitted.
  • Photography/Digital Art: Only original images taken by the applying photographer are permitted. Only one size of an image may be hung in the booth. All photographs and Digital artworks must be limited editions and clearly signed and numbered.
  • If two artists collaborate to create one original piece, they will be considered one exhibitor and will be permitted to exhibit in one booth. The collaboration must be indicated on the application and both artists must sign each piece displayed and sold.
  • Artist must submit images which represent a body of work. We are not accepting specific pieces, but evaluating the overall caliber and originality of the body of work presented. Artists are free to select the individual pieces to show at the event as long as the art shown is consistent with the art submitted in the original application.
  • If an artist wishes to bring one bin rack, he/she may show and sell limited edition reproductions and/or giclees as long as each piece is clearly marked and numbered as a reproduction.

 

Show Policies

  • Acceptance is non-transferable.
  • The venue for this show is the 55,000 square foot Exhibit Hall B of The Palm Beach County Convention Center.
  • Only one artist, or one collaborative team, per 10’ by 10’ booth.
  • Booth fees will range from $1000 to $2000 depending upon booth location. Booth location and price map will be provided upon Artist invitation to participate.
  • No drug use or smoking is permitted anywhere within the Convention Center.
  • Accepted artists must be present during all festival hours. No agents, representatives, family members or friends are permitted to substitute for the accepted artists’ attendance unless prior written request has been received and granted.
  • If an artist, without permission, closes his/her booth prior to the end of the show hours, the artist will not be permitted to return nor accepted for future shows.
  • No discount or sales signs are permitted.
  • Each artist is responsible for paying 20% of all sales to the event charity
  • Each artist is responsible for collecting and remitting local sales tax to the Florida Department of Revenue as required by law.
  • The Pro Panel walled booths are provided and set up by The Tent Guys: www.artisttents.com Walls are 7’ high.
  • Only the interior walls of the display booth may be used to display art.In other words, each 2D artist will have 30 linear feet of Pro Panel walls to display their art. Sculptors must display their art within the 10’ by 10’ booth floor space.
  • Artists may NOT bring their own display walls, but will need to supply their own hangers.
  • Pedestals for sculpture may be rented at an additional cost through The Tent Guys. Arrangements for rental pedestals must be made by the individual sculptor.
  • Double booths may be available. Individual requests will be handled by the Event Coordinators as space permits.
  • Food will be available for purchase at the Convention Center Concessions.
  • Chairs will be provided.
  • Table with cloths available for an additional $25 fee.
  • For artists wishing to bring additional lighting, electrical access will be available for an extra fee. Details will be provided with invitation letter.

Exhibition Space:

The show booths will be set up in advance in Exhibition Hall B of The Palm Beach County Convention Center. Spaces are 10’ by 10’, with 7’ high Pro Panel walls. Artists may bring their own table, cloth and two chairs or may request these be provided for an additional $25 fee. Only one artist per booth, or one approved collaborative team of two artists. Artists are responsible for keeping their own area clean and orderly.

Artists and Charities reserves the right to inspect all displays for compliance with Show Policies and reserves the right to remove art which does not comply.

Application Process:

Applications will be processed online through Juried Art Services (JAS) at www.juriedartservices.com. Juried Art Services is free to participating artists and includes a detailed introductory tutorial. On line application payments are processed directly by JAS.The $45 show application fee is non-refundable. Applications will not be processed nor forwarded to the curatorial committee unless your application fee is paid in full. Once you have been invited to participate in the show, you will receive instructions for payment of the Booth Fee and will have an opportunity to indicate a single or double booth preference. Applications are due by no later than June 15, 2019.

Curatorial Review:

The Curatorial Committee will review the images submitted as a Body of Work. The art will be evaluated for creativity, caliber (technique, skill, difficulty, mastery of materials), design and originality. Once invited, the artist must show art which is consistent with the body of work submitted with the application, but is not required to show the exact pieces submitted.

Notification:

Once the curatorial review is completed, all artists will receive an email from JAS directing each artist to log into their online JAS account to check the status of their application.You must keep your email address information up to date in order to receive this notification.Notifications will be emailed on July 10, 2019. Each artist’s JAS account will indicate their application status:

Invited: Green checkmark

Waitlist: Yellow exclamation mark

Declined: Red “X”

Artists on the waitlist will receive invitations as spaces become available.

Booth Fee Payment:

The Booth Fee is $1000-$2000 for a 10’ by 10’ space (includes Pro Panel wall set up). Fee depends upon booth location. A map will be available to invited artists who must pay this fee directly to Artists and Charities. Instructions for this payment will be sent to each invited artist and must be received by Artists and Charities by July 30, 2019. Full refund of this fee is available until August 15, 2019. Refunds may be available after this date if the Event is able to re-sell the booth. If the booth can be resold, late cancellations will be subject to a late notice processing fee of $100. Application fees are non-refundable. Artist must supply own hangers.

Categories – All Artists must designate a category on their application:

  • 2D – Original two dimensional fine art including acrylics, chalk, charcoal, graphite, ink, oils, pastels, water colors, and mixed media, etc. All work must be framed and/or presented in a professional, finished format. Fine Art, not craft, Fiber art is acceptable.
  • 3D – Original three dimensional art that is Fine Art, not functional art. This would typically be considered free standing sculpture. Artist may bring their own pedestals or optionally rent them from The Tent Guys for an additional fee. Fine glass art and Fine Art Ceramics would be included in this category.
  • Photography – Signed prints created by the artist from his/her own original negative or digital files that were taken by the artist photographer under his/her own volition.
  • Jewelry – Fine Art Jewelry created by the hand of the individual artist.

By submitting this application, I hereby certify that these images represent my original artwork and that the art is unique and made by me.For a collaborative team of two artists, we certify that our combined efforts make every art piece submitted for this application and which will be shown in the event of our invitation to participate. I/we also understand and agree to follow all the show rules as outlined in this prospectus, including remitting 20% of any show sales to Hand in Hand to support the event charities/non-profits. I/we also agree to permit images of my/our art to be used for show publicity purposes.

While grandiose trees easily catch our eye, this exhibition highlights the exquisite character of their unexpected and humble comrades. From preserved, pristine cherry blossoms encased in ice to A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima, trees and their parts continually school us on the process of growth, decay, and resurrection.  “This exhibition features the vibrant hues of nature and the tremendous range of nature’s canopies,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “The artists capture the essence of why we strive to preserve our natural environment.”

 

 

 

The lives of trees and humans are intertwined, with trees being the giver in this arguably unbalanced relationship. Trees provide oxygen, shelter, food, protection, among other things necessary for human survival. Though paradoxically underappreciated and worshiped, there is no denying trees have a profound impact on our psyche. This collection of painting, sculpture, installation, mixed-media, and photo-based work is a glimpse into how 12 divergent artists interpret and respond to trees, real and imagined.

29th Annual All Florida Juried Art Show Is Open For Applications, Sponsored By Arts Council Of Martin County

The Arts Council of Martin County sponsors the 29th Annual All Florida Juried Art Show. This exhibit is open to all residents of Florida, with a deadline of July 31.  The accepted applicants will be exhibited at the Court House Cultural Center in Stuart, FL from October 18 through December 19.  The Rickie Report shares the details and urges all eligible artists to apply to this prestigious exhibit!  We hope arts related organizations will share this with their members.

The Arts Council of Martin County, Florida invites artists residing in Florida to participate in its 29th Annual All Florida Juried Arts Show. Selected works will be exhibited at the Court House Cultural Center from Friday, October 18 through Thursday, December 19, 2019. Located in historic downtown Stuart, the Arts Council of Martin County has been a leader in the arts community since 1980. By providing services to visual and performing artists, arts organizations, students and the public, the Arts Council strives to inspire participation and passion for the arts in our community. The Arts Council provides various programs for the community including ArtsFest, The Court House Cultural Center Gallery and maintains an initiative to support arts education.

Jeweler And Art Therapist, Maria Tritico, Is Featured At Wellington Art Society On May 8. Public Is Welcome To Meet The Artists And Learn More About WAS

The Wellington Art Society will have a demonstration by Maria Tritico of jewelry making with metal on Wednesday, May 8 at the Wellington Community Center.  A “Meet and Greet” is followed by a member spotlight and a brief meeting.  The highlight of the evening will be the demonstration by Maria.  She will discuss her art journey, including her work as an art therapist, and her process from idea to finished product. Maria Tritico is a native Texan who currently lives in West Palm Beach.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing/Jewelry and Photography from Texas State University and her Masters of Art in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  She is presently an Artist-in-Residence at the Armory Art Center, teaching lead jewelry and metalsmithing classes from introduction to metals to intermediate and advance soldering and stone setting.  She also teaches introduction to Metalsmithing and Linear Designs and Stone Setting at Lighthouse Gallery Art Center in Tequesta. She works with  people of all ages in her classes.  Maria’s award winning jewelry has been featured at Continuum 2019.

Maria draws on the life around her as inspiration for her jewelry designs using lines in nature and patterns in architecture and construction materials.  Her pieces are like line drawings, clean and simple so that the viewer’s attention is solely on the design.

As an Art Therapist she has worked in the Cook County Department of Corrections in Chicago, Drug Abuse Foundation of Palm Beach County and Healing Art in West Palm Beach.  Maria allows the client to determine what they need from therapy and tailors how she works to meet their needs, using the art materials as a baseline for conversation.  This helps the client practice creative problem solving skills that parallel skills needed in real life. 

 

 

 

 

The Wellington Art Society is a non-profit charitable organization in its 37th year. It is open to artists of all mediums and patrons of the arts, allowing both local and regional artists to display their art work in local galleries, interact with other artists and serve the community through their art.

The Rickie Report knows that art is all around us – and we just have to stop and notice!  I was checking out what was happening along Colorado Avenue, known as the “artbeart” of Stuart,  and came across a frame shop called The Gilt Complex. Intrigued, I went inside and had a fascinating conversation with Duncan Hurd, the owner.

 

 

TRR:  So, what’s with the name?

Duncan: 

Our business was founded by a gilder and art restorer in New Jersey in 1982. He has a great sense of humor and rather than call his business something like “Ye Olde Frame Shop,” he decided to have a little fun and call it “The Gilt Complex.” We took over after he retired a couple years ago, and we just love the quirkiness of the name. If nothing else, it’s a conversation starter.

TRR:  Tell our readers more about your business.

Duncan: 

The Gilt Complex is a custom framing and art restoration business.  We frame everything from original art painted by the masters to your child’s masterpiece. In our restoration service, we mostly remove dirt and blemishes from the painting’s surface and repair minor damage.  Although we have been known to reline and restore significantly damaged historical works of art. 

 

 

 

TRR:  I’m in love with all your frames!

Duncan: 

Thanks.  We have what we consider to be one of the most diverse collections of frames in the area.  From historical reproduction 22-karat gold leaf finished corner frames to modern unfinished corner frames.  In order to avoid mass confusion, we organize our samples by style, with room between each frame so you can distinguish one from the other.  We have traditional, ornate gold and silver, wood veneer, contemporary and eclectic, and rustic styles, among others.  We even have a bright and colorful Coastal Collection.  

 

 

The thin black liner inside the mat opening on “Blue footed Boobies” by Katie Gianni, heightens the space and distinction between the artwork and the matting. It gives the eye a space to rest and appreciate the artwork, without being too crowded.  This frame further intensifies the feather of the subject matter, while the frame’s corners capture the look of webbed feet.

 

 

 

 

 

TRR:  What’s unique about your business?  What sets you apart?

Duncan: 

Three words: selection, service and smiles!  We have well over 2,000 frame samples in our showroom.  Beyond that, we will never compromise on quality.  We only use acid-free mats and papers, and all our glass is UV protected.  We are very careful about how we handle your art, and we take the time to fit your frame the right way.  That doesn’t mean that everything we do is expensive.  Quite the contrary.  We’re happy to work within any budget, but the quality of our work will be consistent no matter what you pay.  

TRR:  And smiles?

Duncan: 

We have a lot of fun doing what we do.  Our customers often comment about what a happy place this is.  It’s much more rewarding to establish relationships than to squeeze every nickel out of every sale.  So, we talk to you and laugh with you.  Life is too short not to enjoy what you do, and we like to share the fun we have doing it.  Thus, the smiles!

 

 

The dark mat took attention away from the art itself and the orange-toned frame was a distraction.

Now, the artwork is the main focus, bringing the blue from the art piece into the mat lining.  Look at how much brighter this piece seems!

 

 

 

 

TRR:  Who else works with you?

Duncan: 

My wife Pam is an engineer and she does everything in our workshop.  She operates our computerized mat cutter, cuts the glass, assembles the frames and puts it all together.  What I love about her approach is that she spends as much time on all the little things you will never see as she does on what’s in front of you.  Katie Gianni is an accomplished artist who brings that level of creativity to designing the ideal frame for your art, whether it’s an original or a print.  Finding the perfect marriage between the art and the frame is what Katie and I most enjoy.  

 

 

TRR:  You said you’ve been around since 1982, but I didn’t even know you were here.

Duncan: 

For about a dozen years we were tucked away in a strip mall on South Dixie Highway near Port Salerno.  Last year in February we moved the store to Colorado Avenue.  We love, love, love being in downtown Stuart in what is rapidly becoming known as the arts and entertainment district.  Someone recently called it “the artbeat of Stuart.”  More and more people are finding us every day due to our more centralized location.  Just like you did!

 

 

 

 

TRR:  How else can people find you?

Duncan: 

Probably the best place is through the internet.  Our website tells our story pretty well at TheGiltComplex.com.  We are a big supporter of the Arts Council of Martin County and you can see our ad in their magazine, as well as in the Lyric Theatre’s magazine.  One of the great rewards of owning a small business is becoming an integral part of the community.  In addition to the Arts Council, we are active members of the Stuart/Martin Chamber of Commerce.  It’s hard to go anywhere without recognizing someone, and we think that’s wonderful.  

Note the red line incised around the middle of the frame and how this accentuates the outlines in the artwork.  This and the color of the frame itself offer subtle touches that enhance the artwork. 

 

 

 

 

TRR:  What framing advice can you offer our readers?

Duncan: 

An expression I often repeat when choosing a frame is, “What does the art want?”  In other words, what frame will best compliment the art and draw your attention to the painting or print?  The advantage of custom framing is having many options available to you – not only the frames, but also mats, liners and all the other components that go into creating beautiful artwork.  You can almost always find something appropriate within your budget.  But if your decision is driven by price alone, you may not even give yourself the opportunity to consider the best design solution.  

 

 

TRR:  Do you have any concluding thoughts?

Duncan: 

If you surround yourself with art, every day will be filled with joy!

Wellington Art Society Features Fine Art Nature Photographer, Lara Chapman At Whole Foods On May 3. Simultaneous Exhibits On May 14 At Wellington City Hall/ Wellington Community Center, Plus Scholarship Winners

The Wellington Art Society and Wellington Whole Foods Market are currently showing an exhibit by Lara Chapman.  You will find beautiful and unique fine art nature photographs.  The public is invited to the Meet the Artist Reception on May 3rd.  The exhibit is currently on display until the end of June.  In addition, WAS invites the public to the Wellington City Hall Gallery and the Wellington Community Center Gallery exhibits on May 14. The two venues are located on Forest Hill Boulevard just a short walk from each other. “Dipped In Red” by Lara Chapman

 

Lara Chapman was looking for a better way to connect with her local community when she purchased a camera two years ago, and began visiting local parks and attractions.  She found a profound love for nature photography and poetry as seen through a camera lens.  Lara has since written hundreds of poems and taken thousands of photographs and created the “Poetry Picturebook Series”.  Her award winning photographs are on display throughout Palm Beach County and beyond.

Lara finds satisfaction in watching her work come to life and does most of her own printing and framing on archival fine art paper.  Her photography is a visual medium for showing the exquisite beauty of nature in the world.  Her work showcases the treasures of the planet boldly and without reservation.  Lara lives in West Palm Beach with her husband, two children, one dog and four cats.

American-born Suzanne Scherer and Russian-born Pavel Ouporov

 

 

Join us to hear American-born Suzanne Scherer and Russian-born Pavel Ouporov in an illustrated artist talk, followed by a discussion with the artists. Suzanne and Pavel are a collaborative team who work in a wide range of mediums: oil and egg tempera painting, drawing, printmaking, etching on glass, photography, video, and installation, often embellished with gold and silver leaf, gemstones and beads.

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Monarch Maiden” by Scherer & Ouporov

 

 

 

They met while studying at the renowned Moscow Surikov State Academy Art Institute—one of Russia’s two institutions of higher arts education and part of the Russian Academy of Arts established in 1757 by Peter the Great. Scherer had earned a BFA from Florida State University, an MFA from Brooklyn College, and received an International Research & Exchanges Board Award to be the first American visual artist accepted into the Russian Academy of Arts during the Soviet period. At the age of 11, Ouporov won admittance into the Moscow State Academy Art Lyceum, graduated at 18, and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Moscow Surikov State Academy Art Institute.

 

 

“Language of the Hands” by Scherer & Ouporov

 

 

Scherer & Ouporov have received national and international recognition for their collaborative works. Museum exhibitions include the Library of Congress and Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; Museum of Contemporary Art, Goldman Warehouse and Bass Museum, Miami; Historical Museum of the City of Vienna; World Financial Center, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art, Moscow; Passage de Retz, Paris; Boston Center for the Arts; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Kansas City; and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle. Their works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University Fogg Art Museum, the Library of Congress, New York Public Library, and The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, among others.

 

 

 

“Russian Pointe” by Scherer & Ouporov

 

They are one of ten international artists featured in Gustav Klimt: The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections monograph that explores Klimt’s influence among today’s leading contemporary artists. Their work has been reviewed extensively in many publications such as Art In America, ArtNews, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and featured on PBS and Public Affairs Television. Awards include a NY Artist’s Fellowship, Mid-Atlantic Visual Arts Grant and a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists. A comprehensive hard cover publication, “As Above, So Below: Recent Work by Scherer & Ouporov”, was released in conjunction with their solo exhibition at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University in Alabama.

 

 

 

The artists’ paintings are represented by ACA Galleries in New York and Arden Gallery in Boston, as well as at Armand Bolling Fine Arts in Jupiter, Florida. Their original prints are represented by the Mezzanine Gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Art Salons continue to meet in the Armory Art Center Library on Tuesday nights, usually the first Tuesday of each month, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, from October through May. Salons are open to anyone who would like to participate in these lively discussions. 

 

 

 

The Armory Art Center’s art school and galleries provide creative opportunities to enhance your life. The Armory has served the community for over 30 years. The mission of the Armory Art Center is to inspire the creation and experience of art and the Armory’s vision is to be the leading community resource for arts education. Serving over 3,000 students annually, the Armory Art Center offers 160 courses per term in six terms throughout the year to students ranging in age from pre-school to retiree. Classes in drawing, painting, photography, jewelry, fiber, ceramics, and sculpture are held in 12 state-of–the-art studios. Twelve exhibitions are hosted annually in three galleries.
