When Walter O’Neill moved from New York City to South Florida in 2013 to become the Director of the Boca Museum Art School he decided to re-charge his own artistic practice by exploring a different medium. He now is a full-time clay sculptor. (He had been known as a painter with an expertise in fresco painting.)

“Appearance” by Walter O’Neill

As the current ceramic artist-in-residence at Bailey Contemporary Art, BaCA, in Pompano Beach he will be exhibiting his ceramic sculptures in a Solo exhibition in the West Gallery at Bailey Contemporary Art.  Walter’s abstract sculptures intermingle aspects of landscape and sea-life with forms that seem related to body organs.

Throughout his career Walter has juggled his studio art practice with day- jobs teaching, and managing alternative and community-based art programs. In this exhibit he is taking the opportunity to integrate his parallel pursuits as artist and educator by offering visitors to participate.

In 2023, he received an Artist Support Grant from Broward County Cultural Division to mount a two person exhibit of ceramics by O’Neill and Wayne Pelke at The Deerfield Beach Historical Society and Museum. Inspiring others to explore the beauty of ceramics, O’Neil teaches clay sculpture in the adult evening program at Northeast Community Art School in Oakland Park.
