Classic Rock Band Gunhill Road Breaks New Ground with AI Images. How Will AI Impact The Visual Arts?
One of the most important new developments in the world of visual arts – not to mention all forms of communication – is the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). AI’s impact on the world of art is already profound and this is just the beginning. The implications for intellectual property rights and copyright protection have lawyers and legislators burning the midnight oil. As far as art itself is concerned, critics and artists alike are debating what constitutes original creativity versus cold algorithm-generated garbage in/garbage out. Fortunately, there is growing evidence supporting the adage that the technology of today becomes the art of tomorrow. The Rickie Report shares an interview with Michael Harrison and Matthew B. Harrison about their AI journey.

“I Got a Line in New York City” combines classic Dixieland/Jazz/Blues/Rock/Broadway organic music with graphics assisted by generative artificial intelligence.
“According to the experts, AI is poised to dramatically change our lives in countless ways – some for the good while others could be frighteningly dangerous”. Michael Harrison
The visual images that bring stunning dimension to the production were created by human artists – under the direction of the video’s producer, media/intellectual property attorney Matthew B. Harrison (Michael’s son and business partner) – who tapped into the assistance of AI on every panel.

The historic rock band Gunhill Road, a group that’s been around for decades and admired by its loyal following for releasing innovative music videos, has bravely applied leading-edge generative AI in the production of its latest track, “I Got a Line in New York City.” The song is a genre-bending combination of jazz, rock, and blues with a Broadway flair. Michael Harrison – a legendary figure in the radio industry – serves as lead vocalist on the song which he co-wrote with bandmates Steve Goldrich, Paul Reisch and Brian Koonin.

The catchy tune, further energized by its provocative music video, is slightly abstract and even mystical – while, simultaneously, heart-tugging and down-to-earth. The engaging narrative puts an ultra-modern-but-somewhat-retro twist on the classic story of a young person whose lifelong dream of making it on the Broadway stage is dashed by the cold, harsh reality of the big time.

Matthew tells the Rickie Report, “The experience of employing the assistance of ‘generative artificial intelligence’ to render these images of an ‘alternate universe’ version of the Big Apple, sprinkled with bizarre characters and weird technology, has been one of the most exciting, challenging, and educational experiences of my media career. We even left a number of AI ‘warts’ and ‘glitches’ in the production, such as gibberish street signs and a man with two left hands – which add to the adventure. This pioneering experience has given me first-hand insights into the application of AI in both the creative and legal arenas.”

Matthew adds, “The key to keeping this more art than schlock is to patiently tell the software exactly what you have in mind but not expect it to do the abstract or visionary work for you. You have to tell it what’s in your head. If you can’t do that, none of your work using AI will be original. However, properly finessed, the AI will go to great lengths to gather the elements you need along with a few unexpected nuances and make your original vision come to life quicker than you could before. AI can improve an artist’s expression in much the way the paint brush was an advancement over finger painting on the walls of caves.”
