Peggy Kirkwood tells The Rickie Report how she was able to arrange  partnering with the Georgia Watercolor Society for this premiere workshop with Pat Dews.  Peggy said,”During our COVID-19 reopening, while preparing for my Online LIVE! ZOOM watercolor classes, I’ve been admiring Pat Dews “Discoveries in Watermedia” book along with multiple images I’ve come across in past issues of Palette Magazine and Watermedia Focus by Skip Lawrence and Christopher Schink. I came across an article about Pat Dews and began reading. The article mentioned she lived in Hobe Sound at the time. I think the article was written back in 1995 or so. I emailed Pat to ask her if she might be interested in doing a workshop with The New Studio in 2021. The very next day Pat called me in tears. A new friendship was immediately formed”!

Peggy continues, “Pat said, in tears, “You have no idea of what you’ve just done!” I’m thinking, “She’s in tears ut oh…What have I just done?” Pat explained that she has never been involved with the South Florida Artist Community because she travels so much doing her workshops throughout the world. She and her husband just signed a contract on their home of over 45 years in the North East. Pat and her best friend have shared a studio in this Northeastern town and have painted during the summers together over this 45 year period. She cannot travel north to pack up her home and studio because of the COVID virus. All of her workshops have been cancelled through the end of the year due to the virus. She was so happy to hear about The New Studio. I explained to Pat that we were just down US1 in Jupiter and now open with social distancing and wearing masks. I invited Pat to come to the Studio on Friday of the week to see our space and how I am set up for my Online LIVE! Zoom classes. I suggested we could possibly partner with her and the other organizations to do her workshops from The New Studio via ZOOM Online LIVE!. Pat’s first cancelled workshop was to be in August”.

It was organic, as Peggy describes, “Pat came to the Studio, loved the space, loved the light,  and enjoyed meeting our “Social Distancing with Masks” students. We scheduled a ZOOM meeting with Viviane Van Giesen, the new President of the Georgia Watercolor Society. Another friendship immediately formed”!

“Viviane saw our set up via ZOOM and suggested she meet with her Board of Directors to see if they would be interested in reinstating the workshop and offering it Online LIVE with Zoom from The New Studio. I’m pleased to let you know Pat is doing a LIVE! Opening Ceremony Awards Presentation on August 22nd for GWS’s Member Show Opening along with a 3 day “Abstracting Nature” workshop via ZOOM and NSVA on Aug. 27, 28, 29, 2020. Times for the workshop are 9 am to 12 pm. The cost is $200.00. Registration is through GWS”.

The excitement continues!  Peggy shares, “In addition, Pat will be doing another workshop via ZOOM and NSVA with an organization in Indiana sometime in Oct. 2020 along with another workshop to be announced soon!  Pat called me last week to tell me, “I just want you to know that you are never getting rid of me!” Such an amazing blessing and opportunity for future collaborations creating win/win situations for all!!! I truly believe this was not a coincidence but by the Grace of God”!

Pat Dews shares, “Rather than painting the realistic image before me, I paint the abstract essence of my subject. I am drawn to the abstract shapes and textures of flowers, rocks, water, bridges, old and rusted metal and crumbled walls.  In my three day online workshop, streamlined with Zoom through the New Studio for the Visual Arts, Inc. in Jupiter, FL we will cover much ground.  The main focus is design, which is everything. Through lectures, demos and design projects, students will learn how to compose paintings based on the Principles and Elements of Design. Critiques of my paintings in progress will significantly help you on your painting journey.

I love to share what I know and help make better painters.  I give 150 % and students often tell me, that they never work the same again.  There will be an opportunity after the workshop to have private critiques with Pat from her home through FaceTime.
Hoping you join us for a dynamic journey”.
